Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone here has had experience with parking their bike long term in the free bike parking spaces provided in carpark buildings in Auckland CBD?

Might be moving to an apartment in the CBD area and trying to figure out where Ill be able to park my cruiser.

Cheers,

John

JohnHmmm, wouldn't like to be you...unfortunately the CBD is partial to crime everywhere, especially parked vehicles. I havn't had the experience of having to park in the free bike parks in the carparks but I know where they are, and the most safest IMO would be the West entrance of Aotea Square Carpark, down the ramp and on the left hand side as you enter. The Cashier/Security Guard office is just across the way within viewing distance. Go and check it out sometime and pop over and speak with the staff about your circumstances!

I prefer having a bike in a locked gargre on my property at all times. If I were put in your predicament of having to park the bike in a public area I'd think seriously towards making enquiries about secured lockups within walking distance of your apartment, but if you can't afford it then you'll have to make some sacrifices.

Hope you find something satisfactory John. :niceone:

Are the bike parking areas in paid car-parks free or discounted for bikers?

Not sure about long term, but the wilsons parking dudes are very good for short term parks, they normally tell you to park near there booths, and keep an eye on the bike for you, may pay to have a yarn with them and maybe offer a little something for their help ?.

Sky city - Go in Hobson Street and go around until you come back up by the pre-paid exit where the booths are. On the left is a 'island' park your bike up on the 'island' for FREE. Just make sure that you dont hit the barriers when you go in or exiting.

Aotea Square - Go and park where all the other bikes are. Again dont hit the barriers. It is FREE.

Those are the two main ones in Auckland City where you can park your bike for FREE.
Maybe try other parking places.... just dont hit the barriers and you should be fine.

Auckland International Airport - ride in to where they say "drop off" and then go up the wee ramp and into the car park.... come out the same way and ride off.... tis FREE.

Wharf - You used to be able to park down by where the Waiheke Ferry left from. But they have done a revamp around there, so go and ask them.
It was FREE there and some scooters were parked there long term.
I parked my bike there for a weekend once. They also have security guards down that way as well. The bikes get all scrunched in there and some of the owners had bike covers over them.... so they were there for the long haul.

Nope I havent ever hit them.

I was told we could park the bikes there and I didnt believe the person who told me....(when I first got the bike) so when I rung up Sky City to confirm that we could park the bikes there for FREE, the guy said to me as long as we DON'T hit the barriers... we can park there.

Aotea Centre carpark is , as Ms Crashe has said, free for bikes. Just jiggle around the barrier on way in (don't take a ticket) and ditto outward. The guys are quite pro bike, I've chatted with them a few times. There are normally two bike park points. One by the doorway that goes up into Borders, signed "Motorcycles Only". The other on an island at the other end just by the ramp up to mayoral Drive. This one has the advantage of a steel rail you can chain the bike to. At the moment they're doing a lot of building work there , fixing the roof, and sometimes that blocks off the Borders end one.

I belive that Downtown carpark is also free for bikes, but I don't know where you park.

Mistake they make is trying to follow a car in and get through while the barrier's up. It comes down on them. I saw it ! Dude wasn't injured (there must be safety thingies), but a bit rattled. Don't try to go UNDER it , just jiggle round it . You may need to do a left lock/ right lock wiggle to get the bars round. Ratty is fine, BMW the damn mirror just comes EXACTLY in line with the barrier arm.

At the Aotea car park.... when you go in.... look to the right and you will spot the bikes... They have moved the m/bike car parking while the renovating is going on. But still in full view of the guys in the booths.

At the other end that you can also park in.... your bike is NOT in full view of the guys of the booths.

I just phoned Aotea carpark and they said its ok to leave a bike there overnight, etc as long as you inform the cashier. However they wont take any responsibility for it. Sounds fair enough aye?

Might go and speak to them personally at lunch time to confirm this.

CBD is full of arseholes, try to park your bike somewhere VERY secure, and out of public sight.

First week that I had my new bike, some ass tried to nick it and gnarled up the ignition key barrel. That was in a private carpark too!!

Week after that someone had a go when it was parked outside Uni at night.

Now it's in a secure carpark where no one can see it...here's hoping it'll be safe.

An alarm would be a good idea methinks...but it doesn't make the bike go faster so I probably won't buy one.

I've done this several times. No problems. Only thing is they don't open all that early

Finally went and spoke to the folk at Aotea carpark and they are sweet with folk parking bikes in there overnight, etc and dont mind if you chain it to the railing, etc as long as you inform the cashier.
