View Full Version : GSXR rebuild
Giving the GSXR bit of a birthday...
Have minor pitting on the inlet cam lobes, not as bad as the example photo in hanes manual though. Exhaust cam mostly fine.
Is a certain level common ok at higher mileage. How much to repair etc
Engine over 100,000km and alkways had good oil changed often.
Is it a moajor problem..????

Got a pic? It will probably be ok until you can find a new cam.
I recently checked my Oil boiler Bandit at 110,000ks and checked the cams because I have heard of this happening along with a valve check. Mine were in great shape.

Not a major problem, quite common with Suzukis and Kawasakis of that era. I've always thought it was condensation caused it.
Unless there are edges breaking off the pitting, it won't cause any other problems. Just have a good look at the followers for any damage.
I've been known to ue a small oilstone to clean up anything on the followers.
For the really pedantic owners, most cam shops can lay on a buildup and reprofile the damaged lobes. I know Kelford have the std GSXR profiles.

Cheers guys. Here's pic of inlet cam pitting. its very shallow, doesn't catch finger nail edge test.

Hmmm. Are the followers ok? I would take photos as you have done and run it through another oil change cycle and see if it gets worse.

Can't see the pics but check ring groove side clearance as it's a known area where they wear.

Got the barrels off so will prob chuck some new rings in anyway.
Took all the inlet valves out last night, seats and valves looking better than expected. Some dirtied up of course by oil burn. didn't feel like there was any side to side freeplay or wobble.
Pulled all the oil seals out as those definitely getting replaced.

No point if the grooves in the pistons are worn past limits....Both the rings and pistons will probably be worn so measure both - carefully.

Yeah their cheap enough so ill prob replace them too. Was talking about that today with someone along with the phenomenon of piston shrinkage....
