View Full Version : Another cyclist down. Mirrors?

As the title states...another cyclist has been hit and nearly killed in ChCh (damn lucky to be alive!!)
...and again, its all due to failing to see what is behind/beside the cyclist.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/79647220/cyclist-turned-in-front-of-truck-in-central-christchurch-crash-police-say
So...my question is simple
MIRRORS!!
Yeah, Those things fixed to EVERY other legal road going vehicle, to enable the operator a view of threats behind/beside them...as the NZTA and driving/riding instructors will tell you, there bloody important!...infact, they may just save your life!!
So why, with the stats CLEARLY proving that over 70% of cyclist fatalities in NZ are from being hit from BEHIND!!...are they not a legal requirement for cyclists??
...how many more need to die before the blatantly obvious is spotted by those in positions to change the law, times have changed!, and so have our roads!!....but cyclists haven't! (they even fought bitterly against the minimal law changes to protect them - Lights & helmet laws )
I think its time they where forced to meet the current standards all other road going vehicles are held too (Lights, mirrors, indicators and brake lights)
Like these :
http://www.techyzone.com/reviews/winkku-review-bicycle-mirror-indicator-and-lights/
http://www.ezshopex.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/w/i/wiki_winkku_bicycle_lights_mirror_and_indicators_1 .jpg

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/130758532273-0-1/s-l1000.jpg
There not expensive and they have been out in many forms (as shown above) and different price ranges for many many!! years now.
...Ya ever seen any in use??
....of course fuckin not!!
- Cos you lot can just KEEP making allowances for the fucking blind!...and being instantly held accountable for there deaths! (Guilty till proven innocent in this country remember...if you sport a rego warrant & license that is)
Its Time cyclists joined the rest of us in the 21st century...as we now have mirrors!
(Or should this poor trucky just pull over every time shes sees a cyclist...incase ANOTHER one "throws" themselves under her truck again while failing to indicate, failing to look and failing to take reasonable steps to ensure there own safety...by upgrading there riding gear!)
Rastuscat...any thoughts? (I would LOVE to hear your "roadsafety" thoughts on this particular topic mate)

It was unlikely anyone would be charged over the crash, Ingram said.
Why the hell not??? If he'd had an engine he would certainly be charged ..
They need one of this first

Why the hell not??? If he'd had an engine he would certainly be charged ..
The cynic in me says, "'Cause cyclists are special..."
If you or I had turned right across the path of another road user and were hit and knocked off our vehicle we'd certainly be facing more consequences than just a stay in hospital...

Yeah, mirrors will help cyclists get a quick glimpse of the idiot driver just before the cyclist gets smeared across the road from behind.

That one clamped to the frame showing a truck looks like a WOFTAM.
Maybe motorists should show a bit more courtesy.
The 70% hit from behind would tend to suggest its the drivers.

they will always come of second best when things go wrong...
So what the fuck are you worrying about?

good riddance.
Fucking cyclists.
Maybe if enough die or get maimed the rest of those fuckwits will gtfo the road.
you cant legislate against stupidity. (vote akzle... We'll see)
and if fuckwits want to do dumb shit at 50km/hr with a highly protective layer of lycra, without signalling to the big metal things they're near, darwin is calling...

Oh dont get me wrong mate, Im not meaning to be mean to cyclists...they have every right to use the roads etc.
...Im just surprised daily by there lack of...awareness
Nearly every day I see one..."Oh look...an obstacle!"...'swerve into traffic thats moving 3x my own speed with out even a glance around me" :gob:
So if cyclists "had" to have mirrors fitted, they might at least see the bigger picture...and save themselves from that one silly, but fatal, swerve.
hence the post...would they help?? (It seems the stats, and the daily observations might just agree)

5th May 2016, 18:50
Sorry Willy, cyclists need to start wearing protective gear that protects, have mirrors and pay fucking rego like the rest of us road users. No one deserves to be killed by stupidity, theirs or others but I'm over a bunch of lycra wearers insisting legal road users give them over half of the road width on each side OR slow down to their speed ( walking) until a passing manoeuvre can be accomplished, without paying a fucking cent in road user charges.
Licence/rego plates, mirrors, protective gear, at the very least. no more riding in groups that are 2-10 fucking wide in the one small lane available and no more getting mouthy to legal road users who are already frustrated to hell with them and their, the rest of the country owes us a clear road to go as slow or as wide as we fucking well like, without making one single contribution to the upkeep of said roads.

I have been a little involved in a study on this by the LTSA. The cost of the extra staff and compliance costs are higher than the return, the extra cost would be on the tax payer.
So utterly pointless, in fact i was amazed that common sense prevailed and it didnt go ahead.

But if one of those return items is less cyclists down, how do you put a price on that?
Live and let live I say as long as they stay in their lane. Must admit that I use the cycle lane for about 50 / 100 metres each day as I leave work so thank you cyclists!
I did get my back up a few years ago and it probably is a clue to the mindset of SOME cyclists when I saw a cyclists' representative (the lycra clad Saturday morning peloton variety) being interviewed on TV and refering to the roads of NZ as "a shared recreational resource".

Most of my bosses have been over 60, my dad is over 60 and both my wife's parents are over 60. All of these people I just described are fit, healthy and cogent and perfectly ordinary drivers.

The other day I went for a cruise around town on my pushy (it's a mountain bike) first time actually riding on the road. I felt so naked without a mirror. I had to look over my shoulder going past every parked car.
I'd buy a mirror if I ever ride on the road again... because I don't want to have to look over my shoulder, and there's no way I'd go past a parked car without checking the lane I'm moving into is clear.

yup and as has already been stated, that is the stupid drivers fault for not stopping to allow the cyclist to move in to their lane.
same thing happened to me today, cyclist swerved out and around an obstacle. got me to thinking, if there is an obstacle in my lane i need to stop, if i swerve in to the lane next to me im either going to be hit by someone beside me or gonna have a head on so my only real option is to stop until the obstacle moves, why do cyclists believe that they can just swerve out in to the traffic and all will be well.

A completely unhelpful statement. That cyclist's family are probably going through hell over this. Cyclists with side mirrors or helmet mounted rearview mirrors are safer. We all want to get home safely to our families at the end of the day and if a simple mirror can help a cyclist get home safely, why not.
What? Since when is 60 considered that old?
Ok to be on a motorbike though!

yup you do remember correctly hence the comment about head ons.
it does have two servo's and three pubs plus the RSA tho.
it also has some good roads for riding motorcycles and i do tend to chuckle when i see poor buggers on their touring treadlies trying to make headway when we have one of the gentle gale force breezes blowing

Dunno why I think it was a wooden building with the pumps outside uncovered BP?
I was on a mission (and a time penalty) so missed a lot of stuff.
Would like to go back, didn't see any cyclists though, I could have had a conversation with them on some parts of the road I was going so slowly.....
I must admit I loved those roads on the West of the Sth Island and the friendly people.
Blenheim to Ingahua Junction and roads around Franz Josef when you could approach the glacier....
I wonder is there are any cycling tours through that way would be awesome
plan to go back on a mbike this time.... With some rain gear

Same price as a motorcyclist? But we all pay ACC, don't we? Yeah right.
Even multi vehicle owners pay more.
Put the ACC rate onto the license, you have a license for a mbike and want to ride pay for ACC. Should be able to put on hold as well. Similar to current system. Rego still on bike etc but no ACC.
even more cunning add rider info/license number to rego database that way easy to scan to see if current ACC has been paid for the licensed rider. Just make sure someone else doesn't use my license no.
single license/ACC system- you can't ride more than one vehicle at a time well can ya?
maybe need a separate RFID on license to easily tell?

Brain fart moment I suspect. Same as the ones car drivers have, motorcyclists etc etc. Luck he lived.
BUT what really fucks me off is the SHIT NZ reporting - Truck hits bike - WRONG - the cyclists hit the truck.
Same shit reporting when a car hits a train - always reports as Train hit car. But the train cannot deviate from their track thus the car hits the train.

I tried a mirror on the bike once, what a waste of time, the roads surfaces are so shit the thing was vibrating too much to see anything in it.
Mirrors are only as good as the person looking at them, as evidenced by the number of pedestrians and cyclists flattened by trucks, which are very well equipped mirror wise.
Anyway, the moral of this story is that if your chosen means of transport is smaller than a truck, don't put yourself in the way of a truck, you'll probably lose.

To me it suggests that cyclists can zig quicker than cars can zag...
Where I am we have a LOT of long straight roads. We are also on what is a popular inland touring route for cyclists. Approaching one or more of these pests from behind on the open road - with probably a lot of wind noise from the usual half gale blowing - and more noise from the cyclist's blood thumping in his ears...they have no idea you're coming.
And the bastards can't hold a straight line.
Why more haven't been hit I really don't know.
If they had mirrors they wouldn't use them anyway.....

The only assumption you've made in this is situational awareness. The cyclist in the OPs post seemed to be lacking in this regard, so with or without engine, end result might well have been similar...
