I was quite indecisive....but now I'm not so sure anymore....
I have had my 2000 heritage softail for yonks....
made it fit me in various tinkering bling sort of ways as you do....
It is in very good condition and done 60.000 kms.
still love the sound, feel and looks of it.
On trade me are various touring model HD baggers for sale....
between 16 and 18 k. 2007 /2009.
hard panniers, wee fairing the main attraction.
also newer and bigger engines, 6 speed and lower mileage.
my bike probably worth $13 k?
so it would be a $4 k ish upgrade......
cant make up my fuckin mind ......
like a teenager in front of the wardrobe
Stupid thing to ask, but some kb ers have opinions that i actually value.....

saw one with full rops and a backhoe the other day, quite the thing.
Piece of paper, two columns... left hand side present bike and list what you like about it and what you'd like to improve. Right hand column replacement bike and list what it has that you like and want. Go down both lists with a highlighter and highlight the "really important" things and see which side has the advantage...
Or... just go with gut feeling...
Seriously, have used the first approach when deciding about a purchase.
My tuppence worth...

Well... you know the old bike pretty well.
Maybe find an owner of the new bike and have a chat, see if there are any niggles?

I'm as happy as a happy thing with my 5 speed 1450 dyna and never find myself looking for another gear.I also like the simplicity and tune ability of a carb rather than the efi.I have fitted a fork mounted quick release Memphis screen and it's the bees knees.
My 2c worth.Keep the old girl.

Was going to say Electraglide in Blue but that's a song.
I'm prejudiced against handlebar fairings, the Transport Dept used to have those but after a series of crashes attributed to the effect of the wind on the fairings they went away from them. OK, that was a long time ago but the wind is still the same.
Flick a private message to KBer Pete "Crasherfromwayback" he has moved dealers recentish but sold Harleys for years. He is familiar with the range and the riding of same.

A well ridden tourer with a few suspension mods (robert taylor) will surprise a lot of people and in my opinion will out corner the soft tail

I feel for you, but a good decision to make all the same.
There are a lot worse decisions you can be faced with in this life.
My recommendation is:
Go for what makes you happy, sit on other bikes, take them for a ride, if you better when you get back on your old bike, forget them.
Many bikers I have met have said that they regret selling some particular bike they owned, dont fall into that trap.
I bought a 2009 harley last year, just because it made me feel good to ride it, and made me happy, still love it.
BUT i didnt sell my other bike, a GS because I cannot bear to part with it, I feel good riding it too.
Sold my old gsxr because it just become a bit bland to ride ( for me) , just became buzzy transport, fast transport, but it didnt really make me feel good.
Thats my pennies worth.

My only advice - presume you get $10k for yours and the seller of the one you want does not lower his/her price.
Still attractive?
If yes - do it.
If you are lucky you'll get even more than you expect for yours and pay less than you expected for the new one.
In that case my advise is to tell the Mrs you got 10 - the seller did not move, and spend the balance on farkles for the new bike (just sneak them into the shed when she is out :-)

Thinking of adding a small screen to the FB Dyna, like the sound of the quick release.

Love a picture. I have the HD quick detachable backrest with luggage rack, but after investigating the horrendous rattle I have found that one of the latches has lost the small plastic foot off the springy bit. :(

Depends on how you like to ride really mate. If you occasionally like to press on, the FLH's will tie themselves in knots. The Softail frame is far superior to any other Big Block Chassis. The FLH's have the forks in *behind* the steering head (seriously) for light steering at low speed. But that's not so great for handling at higher speeds. Trust me. I also think the *B* engine is smoother than the rubber mounted items.
*Thanks Katman*...tis what I meant to say!
You can fit screen ,rear seat, backrest, luggage rack , load her up and cruise in comfort or strip down and rip through the hills and they do ok with the right suspension setup. My last softail was no quicker and less fun.
