Dr Glover said anti-smoking policies such as the higher taxes, and recent decisions by Wellington and Hutt councils to ban smoking in open public spaces, were now effectively a form of discrimination.
"It is now illegal to discriminate against people on the grounds of ethnicity, age, mental illness or sexuality, but there is this handy tool now which is smoking, which [is] concentrated with higher prevalence amongst the 'undesirables'.
"So people are now, I believe, using smoking as a legitimate and legal way to ... discriminate against people."
She said Maori, and especially Maori women, had the highest smoking rates "because of the cumulative stress of the environment".

Nothing more stressful than having to get up before midday and having to collect your benefit cheque.
Poor souls, when is someone going to give them a break?

Wasn't there a one-eyed Dr at Auckland University that spouted this kind of crazy stuff? One would swear they're the same person.
I can only hope that it's a piss take, because a blanket tax being labelled racist is ridiculous. Everyone has access to the same resources to help them quit, but if you can't be arsed, then why should anyone make special allowance for you?

Funny, was thinking this the other day. Workers can't smoke during work time so the people that can smoke any time are non workers so a bulk of their benefit goes towards smokes instead of necessities, so again the workers are paying for lazy fucks with no self control to sit around smoking.
And the guy in the herald article is a fucken moron.

Dame Tariana said the policy of raising taxes was intended to save lives.
"This is not about being racist, because it was me who brought it in. There is absolutely no way that race comes into the argument," she said.
"This particular initiative was about stopping the uptake of cigarettes by young people, and that has worked."

No smoking in public places would suit me.
When people were allowed to smoke inside, I didn't have to wade through a cloud of smoke every time I walked down the CBD sidewalk. Which is what I have had to do ever since the ban on indoors was put in place. Because at "smoko", all the smokers gather in a group beside the footpath and have indeed, a smoko. Of the old fashioned sort. Best we build huge halls with giant extractor fans and very tall chimneys and make them available to all smokers. Kinda like smoke pubs...
I had a go at a health dept rep about that once when I had a wine shop that also sold cigars. I got hassled because I had cigars in a humidor on the counter. I suggested I suspend it from the ceiling about 25mm above the counter. Would that do please Miss? It all went a bit septic about there and the intended humour was swallowed by a stony acidic look from Frau Scowly. So I hassled her about having to pass through great clouds of smoke in town. She didn't really reply but she eased up a bit about then.

Smokers contribute far more than they'll ever get back from smoking related health issues because lung cancer is quick and efficient at doing its job. There's no languishing away for years on a hospital bed for them off they are unlucky enough to get cancer.

Once many moons ago in foreign climes NZ Customs made a gift to some of their nation's representatives overseas of seized cigarettes: Chesterfields. I don't wish to appear ungrateful but those things were bloody awful. I can see why they still had them left over after they had got rid of every other brand.
As addicted as I was I would almost rather have gone without than smoke those.

I don't care if anyone wants to smoke, that's up to them. But if I have to cough and stink like shit for someone else to fuel their addiction, then is it "my right to smoke"?
What about fines for wankers who sit in a crowd and force 20 people to breath their smoke?

When smoking was banned from Bars and shit, people started bringing their fucking kids out for a meal, which was good for the Bar no question but shit for those who want to have a beer without fucking screaming kids running around the place. Take your kids out for tea but keep them in the restaurant part.
I like having the odd beer but I would imagine a smoker would hate it if I stood there and pissed on them, which essentially is akin to what is happening when smokers invade a non smokers immediate area.

The air on aeroplanes was cleaner when they let people smoke on flights. The airlines canned it because of cost, not the health of passengers. The cabin air was replaced every ten minutes or summat when smoking was allowed. Now it's replaced in something like a 1/4 the rate. This costs less fuel to rum the pumps and shit.
It used to smell a wee bit, now it's actually bad for you.

Nowadays when I have been out to a pub or nightclub, it just smells like shit perfume, B.O, farts, vomit, and thrushy Vagina.
I'd rather come home smelling of smoke, rather than a toilet door off a fishing trawler.
just cos you didnt score any thrushy vagina.
Thanks for that mental picture by the way. Much obliged.

It used to smell a wee bit, now it's actually bad for you.
right, and secondhand smoke isn't now bad for you?
right, and secondhand smoke isn't now bad for you?
Are you fucken retarded? The air was being replaced at a rate that you were getting less toxic air than you do now. You were getting fuck all smoke if any at the rate it was being pushed out of the cabin.

I smoked for 20 odd years. Replaced it with eCigs and ain't looked back.
Cheaper on the wallet and better for your health.
Mind you, it did take some getting used to and it ain't as satisfying as a real ciggie. Still, not had a smoke in almost a year :bye:

That's still smoking, just non toxic and they are also banned from some (if not all) Bars/Clubs etc. You either puff on something or you don't...your habit is still there just not the addiction.

I don't care, it's got me off the ciggies and that's all that counts. I choose to puff and freely admit that I've an addiction, it's just that mines newer and healthier ( so they say ).
The odd thing is all the tabacco flavoured eCigs taste like crap, my fav is coffee , followed closely by banana.
You can get them in differing amounts of nicotine, and I've halved mine already, but on the flip side, you don't smoke them to the butt and kinda never know when you're finished.
Drew as usual, you're a cunt, choke on your ciggie, wanker!

The habit is very different from the addiction. The addiction is the nicotine whereas the habit is when you smoke. First thing in the morning, when drinking, when others light up you do, when talking on the phone/driving/straight after a meal etc = habit. Many smokers will get up after a meal and go outside for a smoke, that's habit.

No shit, Sherlock. Newsflash! "E-Cigarettes" are an alternative method of delivering nicotine to the body so he's hardly shaken the addiction, innit?!?

Perhaps they also "interfere" with navigational equipment?:msn-wink:

And if you switch from smoking cigarettes to vaping a nicotine-filled liquid you're still feeding your addiction. Pretty fucking simple really, innit.

Oh the imagery! I guess the bouquet is in the nostrils of the snif-ee but I never could quite get a liking for the odour of ciggies; no matter what the brand. As a non-smoker I've arrived home with hair stinking of cigarette smoke, and clothes stinking of spilled beer (shoes too) and been grossed out by it, especially the next morning when about to put the washing on.
Shit perfume, farts, b.o. - hey you smell that anywhere. As for thrushy vagina, my daughter made me laugh when she described being in our local mall (Southmall) as it stinking like unwashed vag.

Back on topic though, I wonder if it was us whiteys that were the heaviest smoking demographic whether it would still be considered a racist issue? Probably not 'cos racism only seems to work in any direction that's not white.

Smoking was accepted when the majority of smokers here in NZ were White folk. The white smoking population just wised earlier on the cost to both life and pocket than the Maori/Polly smokers. The smoking majority now is non white and that is partly due to the imagination laws, not racists at all...more Government policy. Asian/Polynesian are well documented heavy smokers.

Ironic really that the Govt created an entire generation of smokers and their children & grandchildren, by giving WW2 soldiers as many cigarettes at they wanted.

Jack the tobacconist on Mungavin? Used to be called Discount Cigarettes or such like but that was deemed illegal in the last round of tobacco law reform.

Yeah that's the fulla. Discount Supplies I think he is now. As ya say, G.C! so much so I sent a mate down there later to grab his vaping gear even though it was a few bucks more expensive than elsewhere. Service with a smile and much more of a conversation than initially expected

That's a damned fine description. He wasn't smoking when I was there. Will likely go down again over the next couple of days and have a chat about oils as my tobacco tastes like Shreddies... and whilst I really really like Shreddies, a little variety doesn't hurt. At least I know where to go be pointed in the right direction.
