Interesting back and forth between Hutchy and MD at the press conference. They must've been taking lessons from the MotoGP guys.

I've been in palmy Hosp so have missed all the news,4 deaths !!! Jeeesus.

Had a romantic idea I could have a go at the place around 1980,thankfully, probably,I decided not to.

The IoM Police were active on Twitter during the week, the usual wannabe racers crashing, arseholes stealing from tents in the campgrounds, Lots of advice on avoiding whatever road was currently affected by an RTC. They don't use the word 'accident' apparently.

There is coverage of the TT on SKY tonight. I stumbled across it last night.

Sad that thieves and rogues are a prevalent group at everything that happens anywhere these days. Arseholes. As for the wannabes, they have always been there and even without the added bravado of the booze , they will keep on killing and maiming themselves.

It's always been a pensive week after the TT for me. Very few TT's have been clear of racing fatalities. So sad but so real. Makes me doubt their sanity, our sanity...but we still get excited and want it to carry on.

RIP to this years fallen.

Went to a film evening around 1970 where Tommy McCleary showed film of his trip to the TT.
He reckoned the level he saw then wasn't that good - he thought 3 or 4 ChCh riders would be competitive there.

Looking back, it's lucky I didn't believe him....

Saw a clip today of Michael Dunlop chasing and catching Bruce Anstey, it looked like Anstey wasn't going very quick on the RCV. I'd guess though that Anstey has a good idea just how fast he can go.

And yes, I just checked Youtube but can't find the clip. Lots of others though...

Thinking back it might have been 1981 Dave Hissy did ok maybe a third ? Remember he said he learnt it, or tried to in 4 parts. In the end I think he took Bill Biber with him, but they had a divorce and Bill came home . lol.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY ACU EVENTS LTD

The Technical Director appointed by ACU Events Ltd has apologised for any confusion caused by his query regarding a dimension on the piston on one of the machines of the podium finishers in the 2016 Supersport 2 Race at the TT Races last week.

He said:

“I made an initial comment in the heat of the moment during post race inspection but on closer examination and after reviewing the TT regulations it became clear that the piston was eligible and complied with the Technical Regulations for the Supersport Class”.

He continued:

“At no point were any of the machines formally declared illegal and no formal protest was received from any of the other competing teams or riders. I would like to apologise to anyone affected by my comment.”

During the press conference Hutchinson accused Dunlop of starting a rumour that his bike was oversized. The scrutineering people then apparently pulled his bike down to measure it. It was found to be OK. Hutchinson said that the matter was not over until he had received an apology from the officials concerned.

There is the apology. Hutchinson should be happier now, if not exactly BFFs with Dunlop.

Dunno who the Technical Director was this year, but last year it was long time crew chief Adrian Gorst, a Kiwi.

Because it happened on the island? The UK media are saying 5 died, for what that's worth.

The total competor deaths on the Mountain circuit is now 252, plus a few officials, spectators, etc.

actually the total comeptitor death rate is around 8000, some have died at the event and given that it's been going since 1907 the others have died of old age.....

Gotta say Doppelganger's impressions are similar to mine. I've only seen a few interviews with MD (3?) but in each one there are hints that he's an agro bugger.

Certainly Hutchinson was unhappy with Dunlop's carry-on - and seemingly was justified because he has now received the apology he suggested was due.

Hutchy was also grumpy because he reckoned that MD had a better engine. Hutchy used a Superstock engine in the Senior because he found his Superbike engine too hard to ride.

When Dunlop broke the lap record in race 1, Dunlops team had ran out of engines, they had purchased an engine from Mar Train Yamaha, which they put in but was built and in spec for last year but not this year, the guy that built the engine was not with the team this year, so no one knew, big arguments eventuated between the teams, and Dunlop was disqualified, something to do with the valve shims we hear, so don't no who's the biggest dick certainly not Hutchy nice bloke, different from Dunlop, that's what we were told on the Island anyway.

It wasn't the first race that he was disqualified from it was the Supersport race, the engine they bought had plated cam cups I think. The engine had been built a couple of years earlier when the rules were different, apparently.

wrong, it was rebuilt this year for their team, from a motor that was legal two years ago. the cam buckets were coated, this was leagl two years ago but as it wasn't a wearble part they kept them, most other shit was replaced and someone didn't check their eligibility.

Yes, they were both road racers and NZ champions in their day. Young Tommy's brother Kevin also had a bike shop, corner of St Asaph and Durham maybe? I think Tommy's sold Suzuki but I'm not too sure. The shop used to be Bob Burns' I think, he and his son Dave were also big in the local scene.

Tom senior was in his mid/late 60's around 1970. Tom junior would have been late/mid 40's at that time. He'd retired from racing around 1967. He went to have another look at the IOM and as the McCleary family did, he took an 8mm movie camera. From memory the one time he rode in the IOM he fell off early on and was out for the week. Old Tom never roadraced. He was very well known on the grasstracks pre war.
Tommy (jnr) took over Bob Burns shop, yes, went through several locations and went Suzuki-yamaha-Suzuki several times. Kevin stayed with old Tom at McCleary motors.
Tommy's son Bob has the Rangiora yamaha shop.
Clear ?

Russell Wright set a 1954 New Zealand speed record of 140 mph (230 km/h) on a Black Lightning at the Tram Road Speed Trials. At the meeting he met Rapide owner Robert "Bob" Burns who had built a streamliner shell for a sidecar record attempt. They formed a partnership for Bob to supply a streamliner shell for Russell's solo world record attempt, if Russell let him use the Black Lightning for his sidecar world record attempt. In December 1954 Bob Burns went first and set a new F.I.M. World Sidecar record of 157 mph (253 km/h), up from 154 mph (248 km/h). On the 2nd of July 1955, Russell Wright set a new F.I.M. world speed record of 185 mph (298 km/h) on the Tram Road at Swannanoa, near Christchurch, while Bob Burns upped his sidecar record to 163.06 mph.

Yes, Bob and Roger Wright set all sorts of records on his Vincent, Dave was a motocross rider and went to the UK to continue in the sport. My brother-in-law worked for Bob at his shop, I was going to ride as swinger at the Speedway for Bob in one of his comebacks in 1967, never materialised though. Dave was a good friend of mine when he came back from the UK in the early 70's.

Yes, good remembering. After the motorway opened and the traffic became too much speed events shifted to the parallel South Eyre Highway. I was in the Pioneer motorbike club and since I worked at the University I had access to very accurate timing equipment and used to do the timing at the events. I even road my 750 Kawasaki H2 at some of them. Bert Monroe came to at least one of them. He could hardly see and hit the shingle on both sides of the road while shifting gears with his hand because of weakness in his ankle. The cop at the barrier at the end of the run had to shift his car in a hurry as Bert hadn't seen the end of the course and was still doing a 100 or so as he went past. Great times, and no health and safety.

Meanwhile back at the TT.

BSN (Bike Sport News) have an app that can presumably be downloaded from where you download your apps, so far it's free. It's in magazine format and the latest issue covers the TT races.

Technical chief this time was again Adrian Gorst, the very experienced Kiwi, and it was he who made the apology to Hutchinson.
