My son is contemplating getting himself another bike, doesn't want to spend to much money (bloody accountants), although there's no issue with him getting a full licence probably still something in the LAMS range as it's likely to end up being used as a commuter.

I've bought and sold a few in recent years and had no problem picking up something reasonable in the 1-2k range, but a search on trademe suggests that these bikes have suddenly disappeared.

Is there somewhere else they are being advertised for sale, or have they all just been shoved in the back of a shed because the rego has got too expensive?

Nah - they have all been purchased and had their rear sub frames looped, forks lowered, seats covered in brown leather and exhausts wrapped and are now on Trademe for sale starting at 5K as 'custom' bikes.

Years ago they'd have been RBA bikes: Rolled, Bowled & Assholed; a sure sign to leave well alone  how things change.

Perhaps the new Learner laws may have pushed up the price also on anything up to 650cc while dropping the 250cc prices slightly....Trademe changed their advert prices a bit ago now want your firstborn child as payment to sell a bike and when you only want 1 to 2k this may make a difference.

Not sure what other sale sites are out there or if NZ even has a big enough sale market to support multi internet sites.
Motorcycle Alley?
Motorcycle Trader?
These seem to suffer from the same condition you speak of in your OP.

Should be able to pick up an FXR150 for that kind of money if you can get in before one of my mates turns it into a bucket racer. There's a few on trademe for that kind of coin.

Best source for cheap bikes is the Facebook buy and sell groups, full of retards who really don't know what their bikes are worth or are after quick $$$

I've a Kawasaki GPZ500S lurking in the shed I'd sell for $1k, bit rough round the edges but all there. Rego on hold, 68km.

The cheap bike market has moved to fb. There is a few 'trade' accounts on there.

Here just one of them: https://www.facebook.com/groups/141941229286165/

And one more: https://www.facebook.com/groups/823657384362840/?fref=nf

Search fb and you will find many more.

Just make sure the sale is real and you don't end up standing there with no bike and your $$'s gone...

If you're in hamilton as per your profile, then sadly it's probably too expensive to get the thing to the evil flatlands. Otherwise it would be a ripper, not on the LAMS list and going by internet specs a smidge outside limit, so he'd just have to pull his finger out and get his full.

I wondered if that was the case.

My experiences of trying to deal with people in facebook groups has not been stunning, and not something I wish to repeat any time soon.
