View Full Version : You decide whether I stay or leave?

Dear all,

I wrote a thread yesterday called "Pathetic horns!!" It was all about how bad horns are on bikes I've owned. I had not once mentioned the "G" word and I was quite enjoying the discussion until Mr Hitcher for some reason quoted this:

Now I know how some of you react to me posting scripture  but when someone else does it there seems to be no problem, especially when it is done to intimidate me.

To top it off, 6 posts later I get this offensive post thrown at me from Mr Jackrat & backed up immediately by Mr Jim2:

Now, I don't think that was at all necessary and if that's the way I'm going to get treated here by the Senior Members then I'm outta here.

But I'll let you all decide in this poll.

I say stay.

You descibe you're biography as follows:

"I'm a happily married Christian who loves the Lord. Even though motorcycling is awesome and I love it, NOTHING thrills my soul more than my Saviour Jesus Christ and the life which is in Him! If you want to know what I'm talking about please ask :o)"

If you stick to your original philosophy then I don't think there should be any problem. However if you choose to exercise free speach, others will use their right to exercise their free speach against you.

Like you say let others come to you, and that way I'm sure you'll be a lot more accepted.

Zed,
The temptation to say something about reaping what you have sown is irresistible. Nevertheless reading between the lines I feel your puzzlement and pain. What you may not understand is that quoting scripture (however well-meant) and evoking God and his commandments indiscriminately and irrelevantly suggests a self-righteousness that causes many people to get their backs up. You made the mistake of investing too much of your personal and private beliefs in these posts. Putting up a poll as to whether you should stay or go is not the right way to solve the problem either. A re-think, change of tone, some apologies (from both sides) and a fresh start would be a more positive approach...

Zed,

I think you need to wake up and smell the coffee sunshine!
You repeatedly quote scripture in your postings either to make your point or in retaliation to others. When are you going to use your own words to justify your actions/defend your corner/present your opinion, rather than rely on the words of an as yet unproven 'deity' I'm fairly sure that christian is not another word for fuckwit, you have a brain and I'm sure you know how to use it. I'm also farily sure that you must be able to understand that constantly ramming gods words down the throats of people who have consistently made it clear that they aint interested is going to tick them off, in much the same way that if I constantly denied christ in every single one of my postings, you'd get pissed off with it too.

EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD(even traffic wardens) have the right to hold a belief or opinion they do not have the right to ram that opinion down our throats at every available opportunity(well they do but a smack in the gob often offends) Personally I find some of your posts quite entertaining, especially in the response they draw BUT IT DOES WEAR A BIT THIN AFTER A WHILE.

I do question your seeming inability to live your life without the constant aid of your belief, life is not that hard, really it isn't and if it is then for fecks sake pull yer head in and sort yourself out, the ONLY thing that limits us in this life is ourselves.

My take on your poll is this, you feel unwelcome yet rather than make a decision to leave or stay you put that decision into the hands of others, this displays an inability to take responsibility for your own actions and is a trait often seen in "true, devout believers"(of any faith) and gives rise to the infamous "god made me do it" and on that basis I refuse to vote. You should consider your actions and what has brought you to this point, examine your motives and decide if you are willing to stay or go and act accordingly.

"We love to make friends and dislike gaining enemies, life is full of both":Pete Langford

My opinion is my own and I don't need anyone else to help me with it!

I like what MikeL has to say above (don't expose too much of your person). & petethepom Don't keep ramming it down peoples throats, I notice that you have toned it down a bit, lately. (pete has a point about him not condemning god in each of his posts).

This is in general a M/C site, I got no objection to God being talked in the off topic areas (which you have done). If I am not interested, I will not read it or post to it. Not hard to do. (Posts dry up anyway).

If people can't tolerate you, no problem let them put you on their ignore list.

But you got as much right to be here saying your bit as anybody.

I say Stay! ...The world needs more colour, then I gets more to comment on...

very well said pete. i too could not vote on this, if we say stay - it's 'oh they like me, they're my friends', if we say go, it's 'those kiwibikers are a bunch of unaccepting closed minded heathens......'

I think Hitcher was having a joke, like bike horn, gods horn....Yeah?No?

It would be a shame for you to leave feeling 'got at'; sometimes people just respond to the red flag that was waved... Not just at you, but at any difference of opinion.
If you don't like it, wave a different flag.
Thats the beauty and the beast of the internet....you can say what you like from behind a keyboard.

People are pretty black and white here and speak their mind freely and easily, Like you have......
This site is pretty bloody good in a lot of ways, I don't think you have been here long enough to see it all, and meet the people. Maybee Mitch will invite you to her next BBQ? We're not all bad bastards you know.....
Stick around.

Mitch is in Welly now I do believe.... care to take up the challenge George?

Interesting to hear that religion is a no-no here on this board. Way to sensitive? Bikers and religion... never thought it'd be such a touchy subject.
Personally I feel kinda discriminated, being a christian and all.

I'm not the type to go round blabbing to everyone about religion, as I do know how people don't like it. But still... if you don't like it, then don't read it... how hard is that to do?

Well said Ant!!!
Everyone has the right to their own beliefs, it's just a matter of keeping everything in check and respecting the fact that the person you are talking to may very well see things in a different way.
If we were all the same the world would be a bloody boring place to be!!!!
CAN YOU IMAGIN IF WE ALL RODE THE SAME BIKE'S?
Spankme has brought together a huge variety of people by starting this site and many of us have got to be quite good mates. That doesn't mean we all share every opinion we have.
It does however mean that everyone has their turn with their ass on the block................ even you by the sounds of things Zed!!
We have all been there and laughed about it in the end. Don't make to big a deal about it.

And yup i'm a Welly girl now Ant but I still have lots of room for people to stay so I hope to see some of you Auckland boys and girls at the next gathering of the KBers.

Get over yourself Zed.

My quote from the bible was intended to be humorous... You've got a pathetic horn on your bike but at least your god has got a decent one...

Given your obvious interest in the bible I thought that this may have amused you. No hard feelings and all that... It looks like I called that one wrong.

Zed,, Zed,, Zed!,,,,

Course you should stay!
You have come up with some interesting thoughts/threads.

And as far as quoting scripture goes,, I don't see a problem with it in the thread that was obviously aimed at Christain riders, (thou highjacked a little by those with nothing better to do! :Pokey: :spudbooge ). But, What did you expect! :not: ?

I feel, you are a little quick to "Bite back" at these guys. :spudwhat: :buggerd:

And Hitchers scripture reply was obviously just to be humourous! Get over it!

Yes, its not necessary that some have attacked you personally,, But you set yourself up for it. Even this "Should I stay" thread is a bit lame. Harden up! :thud:

Come out on a KB ride or something and show us your faith in action, rather that throw scripture around and get annoyed at peoples responses.

Zed, just turn the other cheek :2thumbsup Agree with most of the above. There are a few people that respond very personally (or it appears that way) and are always dangling the hook to see who bites. Not much different to the real world really. If you feel personally insulted or got at, why not PM the person and see if you can sort things out privately one on one, rather than in a public forum?

Have a look and see how much stick WKID the bikeless receives, does he go? (and a few have pointedly asked why he still lingers).

As for why I am here - because I am still a biker at heart and will own another bike.....in fact this may shortly come to a reality (track only - more news later).

Stay man.....nothing quite like controversy to get this board rocking. Shit man - keep it up. Don't take my responses personally - as they were only intended to play devils advocate, and not aimed at you per se.

I agree with everyone elses comments.

Zed I don't care whether you stay or not but if you say things that to me look like they need a reply, then I will reply. I'm an engineer by qualification and always look at things from a logical practical point of view. If you tell me stuff that God is supposed to be saying as his word then I'm thinking have you ever heard him speak these words or just that someone else told you that. Similarly if the words don't make a lot of sense then I will say so. Respect for others comes from your own beliefs about how you yourself want to be treated, I don't need someone telling me that some other person has passed on some word from some God as to what we should believe. I mentioned on one of the earlier posts the majority of people on this earth are not christians so are they all so wrong? Countries seem to get along OK without such, as an example China.

For me the point would be I have through my life rubbed shoulders with a few religious people and have never found any I could say I liked that much. They always seemed to be uptight and aggressive people that didn't treat the people around them that well whether it be those I knew at Uni or working people afterwards. Maybe there are some here that can prove me wrong but that so far has been my experience.

If we were to meet you in person would conversation deteriorate just as rapidly as postings have here and would you be the sort of person we would walk away from at a party to find someone more interesting to talk to once we got sick of the babble? Just asking the question. There are people who are fun to be with and those that are not and that feeling is personal to each individual and what kind of group they hang out in.

We are here to talk about bikes I thought without too much baggage attached.

Your beliefs-god,church etc.
others beliefs- they don't like you.

Therefore i have come to the conclusion that if you keep your beliefs to yourself, others won't bombard you with theirs and everyone will be happy.

Personally I don't mind you, or them. I even wen't to church once or twice but i also say things like " fuck off" alot as well.

:Playnice: C'mon guys I just think you should ALL build a bridge & get over it! I think people should be "allowed" to have a spirited debate - gettin' personal is a bit childish really. I have only very briefly looked in on the thread that started all this and just though "Oh well not my thing so I'm not gonna bother commenting."

Some of the things posted on this site are not what I'm into me but I just don't read them b/c I know that the diversity of people on this site is HUGE.

The thing we all have in common is a passion for riding. :Punk:

Any other passions be it God, porn, women in tight tops, men in tight pants ;) is just someones opinion - CHILL!

Be strong bro, stay.

Tho I personally / generally prefer to view threads about bikes not God (and things related to such) I think you have started off brilliantly. 'tis a very opinionated group, and you did well to spark off a very entertaining debate so early, a thread which went a lot deeper than simply about the subject of religion itself. Well done.

It used to be that you didn't discuss politics, money or religion. Without politics or money many people wouldn't have anything to talk about. But religion still gets a lot of backs up. If you keep quoting scripture like some hillbilly snake handler, you will get a reaction. If you must spread the word, go door to door.

Zed, by all means stay and realise what is here and how you can fit in. As a christian myself, I'm of the mind (hey, I may be wrong) that people respond better to my views on life if I take the time to know theirs. Given the reactions you've got and made to all thats happened in the last 10 days, maybe there's something appropriate about that when in this forum.

Merv, as for china, I'm gonna disagree with you there. That is one screwed up country right now (economics, freedom, politics...) that needs help.

Lou, the idea of door to door freaks me out and tends to go at odds with my 'get to know the other person first' methodology. I don't know any christians that have been approached this way and made a decision for God because of it.

Merv, as for china, I'm gonna disagree with you there. That is one screwed up country right now (economics, freedom, politics...) that needs help.

Yeah but the point I am making is that the bulk of the earth's population are not christians. We may sit in judgement of China and for that matter India where all the big populations are and say they are screwed up, but once again that is our view looking from our end. They may well think the same about New Zealand and quite clearly many countries and other religions think that about USA. So who is right and who has the right to say the other view is wrong? Was christianity the first religion on earth? Is it therefore the only one that has it right? Somehow I don't think so, so no use trying to convince us of that. If you believe it, good on you, but that is your choice not mine. It just isn't my thing.

Its like bikers saying cage drivers are the pits and vice versa and all the attacks on SUV drivers in USA saying they are bad, but those that choose those things think it is right for them. Hell how can people buy bright green Kawasakis instead of beautiful red Hondas? Well I am sure Doug Green will tell us because that is his choice and I respect him for it as he will think his green bike is beautiful. Then there is the Harley crowd - man the bagging they get from outside their circle, but in their circle they talk of Jap bikes equally as badly and the mean ones actually burn Jap bikes at their rallies just for a laugh.

It is an issue that can never be resolved for as long as you have more than one person in a room there will be a difference of opinion and we have to get used to respecting the other's point of view seeing it from their viewpoint not ours.

So ride on brothers and keep telling us about your experiences, but not much point talking about some obscure stuff like religion and that is the road Zed was trying to go down.

I assume we are all big girls and boys here and can take a bit of stick occaisionally - shit, some members seem to get a diet of nothing else :moon: (still here Dan?) but, like life, its all about tolerance and enjoyment of diversity, or intolerance and shit stirring if thats your feeling for the day :innocent: .
Stay and contribute if you want to, but realise that some people get really pissed off with scripture being thrown around and let their feelings be known - just like life.

Hi Zed,

I haven't been on this forum for long bro, but a couple of your posts reminded me of when I was walking to town (a few years ago) and I saw these two mormon missionaries getting booted off this old man's property. All I heard was, "$^ck Off!! Can't you see I'm trying to get pissed!"

And later on in life I've realised that although the old guy could've just told those two "no thanks", people's lives are their own and mentioning something that you are passionate about (especially forcibly) that isn't somebody elses cup of tea may evoke some 'kind' of reaction. Since we all realise that you're passionate about God I'm sure that those of us that are interested will ask you more if we want.

Stick to the topic (as much as feasible), look at the Off Topic forum for subsequent posts about your non-biking passion but there's no need to go.

We all love bikes and riding bro. It's a shame to lose members for no real reason at all.

Jackrat has said some stuff in the past that's pised me off, and some other stuff that has been tremendously helpful. No big deal to me. It's all been a challenge to make me think - and it has.

Come in here and talk about bikes as has been mentioned - that's why we're all here. If your perspective on bikes and riding is influenced by your faith, then I'd say bring that to the table too - the more perspectives we have up for discussion the better.

I'm not going to diss people for what they think, but as soon as they start pushing it in a forum that's not appropriate I'll get annoyed (even if the opinions stated align with mine). That's just a dumb thing to do - and I think you know that - hence you not mentioning God.

No biggie - you be you, I'll be me, and when it comes to bikes lets talk!

If you are going to stick it to others you can hardly complain when you get it 'sticked' to you. The fact that you believe your posts are less offensive than others to which you do not agree is irrelevent. You have placed yourself up on a pedestal and when someone has knocked you off you come here and ask for help. You proclaim for all to hear you are a man of God, a tough guy, then bloody well act like one and make up your own mind. But you did ask. For my part I would like you to stay. Zed you may not be aware but you are one of the boards personalities good or ill and there are some who would miss you. Just stop the biblical quotes and use the mind that God gave you.

One thing i like about the internet is its anonymity. I say stuff here i would never say to a person that knows who i am, maybe im just some sort of psychopath. but i think many people enjoy these forums for the same reason, that being said, you dont need to take stuff so personally thats written here.

I do find it very que re arse that everyone says they dont like to talk about religion yet the religous ravings thread started by Zed is the most viewed thread here. :spudwhat:

I don't really know you, but I have read your posts and also talked to you in the chat room. From what I can asertain you are quite the enthusiastic christian. Personally I don't have a problem with that, although some might do. I think the main problem with some christians (I am a christian) is that we are all split in factions that disagree with each other. This alone puts many individuals off the topic in itself. Also there is the problem of those christians that feel the need to "save" others, when the actual reality of their actions are: invading peoples' personal space, forcing unwanted conversation onto an individual(s) even if that person does not want it. I have had both good and bad experiences with different "clans" of christians. Can't actually say I personally have any problem with you and think that its entirely up to you if you go or stay. Can't really see a good enough reason for you to go. Although maybe others do, although its not their place to judge as you allready know...

You're welcome, it is my illustrious and reverend namesake. I wonder if the subliminal effect of being associated with a priest would be enough to make you become friends with Mr Zed. Might work. You could study the Bible togeher.

And the bike is of course appropriatly depicted for a Nana like me. Wouldn't have thought you'd be joining the Nana-riders group though. If you're going to ride like a Nana too, maybe we should go for a very slow gentle Nana ride together . Never over 60kph of course.

Excellent. You'll make a fine Nana rider. I'll loan you my spare training wheels, and then we just need to adjust down the speed restricter on your bike to limit it to 70kph (getting rid of that sports bike altogether and replacing it with a Nifty 50 would be better, but that's advanced Nana'ering)

I can see you and I and Mr WINJA having a great time, gently pottering around , at nice safe low speeds (both wheels ALWAYS firmly on the ground needless to say). With frequent stops for a nice cup of tea , and some knitting.

Hmm, don't know about that . That low ratio could tempt you into un-Nana'erish acceleration. A very gentle , almost imperceptable increase in speed is what Nanas seek - topping out at no more than 50kph of course.

Lots of speed demons and hoons on those postie bikes - look at Mr Motu and his C50. Word is that Eviel Knieval is nothing compared to Mr Motu on a C50. Not at all suitable for a Nana.

A BMW C1 would be a very good choice .

Excellent. I see you are fully qualified as a Nana. And best of all you already have a 50cc. So I take it you'll be getting rid of that Suzuki 1000 now, and joining Mr John and I in Nana'ering ?

Since a Nana on a 50cc has little opportunity to break the speed limit, let alone do a runner, I predict your relations with the policepersons will markedly improve.

I do just need to confirm that you knit, though . That (or crochet) is a necessity.
