View Full Version : TonyB's freedom ride ;-)

TonyB
2nd October 2005, 18:57
Hi all. Not expecting much of a turnout for this one- it's on a Thursday- Oct 13th. I finish my old job on the 12th, so on the Thursday, I have the WHOLE DAY to go for a ride. And half the day on Friday the 14th.

So the plan is to do the Lewis and Arthurs Pass loop. This is dependant on two things;

The weather (well D-uh!)
Progress with the kids having Chicken Pox. Zach has it now. Lexie may have it by then.

If one of the kids is home sick it's all off. If the weather here is crap but it's good on the coast I'll go. If the weather on the cost is crap but it's good on the east side I might do a loop up through Nelson or through the Waiu valley. There are many possibilities! I want to get home Thursday night worn out, happy and ready for a

And then an Akaroa GP Friday morning :niceone:

SO, Bren and OAB- I'm looking at YOU on this one. Might even change the conditions for that book loan if you change your day off to Thursday...

I should be ok for both of them! Think I can get time off...

That it is. 5 down at the kids preschool this morning.

Any more takers? Note Sniper will be on a 250, so fear yea not riders of smaller bikes. And Bren rides like a nanna anyway :Pokey: . Having said that, it's a big trip- probably not learner material- and you'll need something sporty to keep up with the big bikes.

Ahhh, I take it that's what the pm was about Tony. Well sure, don't see changing my day off to Thursday as being a problem, so count me and Suzi in. She'll love the decent ride, been too long since I last headed out of town for a serious ride.

And Tony, I've done Chch-Nelson-Chch in a day twice before on the gixxer, no sore wrist or back, just a huge smile on my dial. So I'm more than keen to do Nelson and back. Head up inland then come back down the coast, fucking brilliant ride.

onearmedbandit

Fuck, the more I think about this the more I'm keen, roll on next Thursday. Shit, if the weathers good I might even do a run this Wednesday.

Well, my obviously deprived freind, imagine if you will, miles and miles of sweepers, traveling through rolling limestone hills. The kind you can really crank the bike over on and carry a good speed. The road also has some tight windy bits high on bluffs above the ocean. It's a fucken COOL road

Well, thats true but no....
The plan forming in my tiny mind is probably too stupid to even contemplate. It would be a huuuuuuuuuge day:
Chch to Springs Junction
Springs Junction to Reefton
Reefton to Greymouth
Greymouth to Westport
Westport to Nelson
Nelson to Kiakoura
Kiakoura to Chch

It's about 1100k in a day....

Or I'm told the road from Westport to Karamea is a gem:
Chch to Springs Junction
Springs Junction to Reefton
Reefton to Greymouth
Greymouth to Westport
Westport to Karamea to Westport
Westport to Springs Junction
Springs Junction to Chch

Any other suggestions?

For me anything over 700k's in a day on a sprots bike is a lot. 'Specially with a sore knee. You SURE you'll be up to it? Definitely not trying to talk you out of it, but I'd hate to see you stuff up the surgery.

After my first op I had my leg in plaster and I also had a booking for my full license test. I passed, but only after I promised the instructor I wouldn't blame him if I fell off.

Thanks for the concern though Tony :D. I will have to make the call closr to the time but I will let you know.

Take note people, storing your machine in a lunatics gagre means social rejects of every persausion crusing round on your baby while you're at home under the floor jacking up piles.

K14, just make sure that skinny white ass of yours doesn't leave permamnent dents in the seat eh... and the rear tyre will need replacing and make sure you wipe the "excitement stains" off the tank....

It's a few all right. A few too many I suspect. MrsB is already putting in the hard word about getting home at a reasonable hour.

Honestly by the time you fuck about doing fuel stops, eating, potty stops etc it's a long day to cover for a group to 700k. The big problem is when 1 bike has a short range. We might have to look at sorting out gas stops.

Who's got the shortest range? My FZR has seen 290k on a tank but it had about 200ml of petrol left and that was traveling through the MacKenzie etc at 110k's. 250k is do-able.

Ride details. Fuck nows- it's weather dependant really. The night before with tweaks on the day?

TonyB

Best I've got is about 210km, averaging 120-130 on the open road.
Is that to reserve or out of gas?

And yeh, 330 is bloody impressive.... is that right? Can't see MsSnipers FZR having a big enough tank to do those sort of k's

onearmedbandit
4th October 2005, 16:48
No reserve on my bike Tony, just a flashing light when approaching empty, then the light stays on for a while, then the bike stops, then you realise you should've pulled into that gas station despite the deep shingle driveway instead of hoping you'd make it to Kiakora. Not that that's ever happened to me.

You guys obviously dont work on the South African way of fuel stops. When someone is not looking out comes my handy hosepipe and some of their fuel moves to my tank. See, so everyone holds spare fuel for me. :devil2:

Sorry that was a typo, it is more around the 230 mark, cheers K14

TonyB
5th October 2005, 08:42
Thanks to the miricle that is Wises Maps Route Finder (http://www.wises.co.nz/route/) we can actually plan out our fuel stops in advance. No I don't normally do this.... really...

Assuming we do the Nelson Loop minus the west coast...

Heathcote to Amberly---------- 59k
Amberly to Culverden----------- 43k
Culverden to Springs Junction---129k
Springs to Murchison----------- 86k
Murch to Wakefield------------ 101k
Wakefield to Nelson------------- 35k
Nelson to Rai Valley- ------------45k
Rai to Blenheim----------------- 67k
Blenheim to Kaikoura----------- 139k
Kaikoura to Heathcote--------- 189k
Total--------------------------893k

So I can get away with stopping at
Springs- 231k
Nelson- 222k
Kaikoura-251k (hopefully)

But since OAB has the shortest range we may as well all fill up when he does, otherwise you can end up with twice as many stops. Where do you normally stop to do this loop OAB?

Sniper
5th October 2005, 08:49
May I still bring the hosepipe?

TonyB
5th October 2005, 08:55
May I still bring the hosepipe?

WEll I know I can just make it to Springs if I full up leaving CHCH, normally top up at Murchison, full up in Nelson. This time I stop in Blenheim for a top-up, same at Kiaks, and probably Amberly/Culverdon on the way back. When I did my last trip up there by the time I got to Springs it was about 7pm and the servo was shut! Luckily I found they have 24hr eftpos pumps there aye!?!

Eeeeeexcellent. Looks like Bren will only be doing part of the ride, so Sniper you would have the chance to opt out of the full loop on the day if you wanted.
I just wonder if we'd be better to go the other way around? The East Coast gets pretty chilly late afternoon, but would be sunny early morning.

MrsB thinks I'm nuts organising this so far inadvance. Perhaps she's right, but dontcha just feel the buzz building up everytime you think about a big ride? I do.

Sweeeet, another punter. Cool!

In breaking news, MrsB (she who must be obeyed), has given her blessing for the Thursday ride to take place even if one of the kids is home sick :niceone: This remarkable turn of events is attributed to the attendance of the elusive OneArmedBandit. MrsB is quoted as saying "Wow! If OAB's going then I guess you'll HAVE to go" :niceone: And now to the weather.

The metvu.com 7 day long range forecast predicts that a strong cold southerly flow will be passing over the South Island on Thursday the 13th. The east coast will be fine, but there will be light rain on the west coast and in the Nelson, Buller regions.

BAH! What do they know?!

Well if the weather men have any hope of predicting the weather nearly a week in advance, then you shouldn't feel bad about it. It's supposed to be much like today- cold southerlies and icy rain...

Of course, what would THEY know? It's gonna be :sunny:

Me too. No fun riding in this crap.

And for you Nth Islanders who are thinking of taking the piss- this isn't just a bit of rain. It's about 6°C. Icy rain and hail. Gusting winds. It's SHIT. We were loading the kids in the car when this almighty gust came roaring down the valley- there was a sound not unlike tyres skidding on wet roads and then a huge BANG! MrsB, who could see what was happening provided a very useful comentary "Shit! Shit! Shit! Oh my god!" so I had a look. Twas not a car, but a 6m plus sheet of currugated iron had been ripped from a roof and was now wrapped around a lamp post not 50m away.... Lovely day here...

TonyB
11th October 2005, 05:52
Right. 'tis getting closer now. The weather forecast still doesn't look too good, but hopefully they are wrong...
MrsB has decreed that I shall be home by 6pm to help with the kids. I shall obey this command on pain of death. So that means leaving pretty bloody early, like maybe 6am. In theory the trip should be easy enough to do in 10 hours, but group rides being the way they are it is bound to take longer. OAB, how long does this trip normally take you?

Yep, betterer. Or I could have said that it's looking Gooder- see example below.
Looking at the maps it looks like one of those little fronts that bring breif rain and then bugger off. Quite often they are 'dry', so we might be OK. Agree about the weather tho- bring back winter! It was gooder than this!

Yup, a roundabout. Only about 5 mins from home. There was a car that seemed to want to teach the bike a lesson, and a TonyB that took exception. In the process of teaching the car a lesson the bike got into a bit of a slide, which I duly corrected and then continued the lesson. It probably felt worse than it was...

To make it 1000 would have required going over to the coast as well. We'll do that next time (when you come) just for you.

14th October 2005, 08:59
Right, if Rashika will stop hassling me for 5 mins,:bleh: I'll try and do a write up.

I've been wanting to get the forks on the FZR rebuilt for some time now. They effectively have no damping. That parts had arrived, but there was no time to rebuild them before the ride, so bought some 20 wt fork oil from Dirt Action Services (top blokes!) and bunged it in during lunch and smoko at work on my last day. Once it was in things definitely approved somewhat. Went home and threw some gear in a bag, stapped it on the back, checked the engine oil and then was ready to go.

Thursday morning the kids woke us up at about 5:15am. Wandered outside at 5:40 to find it warm with a gentle Norwest. The DRY southerly change (see! they do exist Rashika!) arrived at around 6. Helped MrsB get the kids off to preschool and then headed off for the nearest BP to fill her up with Ultimate. Bike seems to lurve that stuff  The pumps were all in use and it was taking forever for anyone to return to their cars. The somewhat familiar looking girl on the till told me eftpos was down all over the country... and then invited me to a party on Saturday night. Scared witless I took off :chase:

Trundeled into the meeting spot to find it devoid of other bikes. Hmmm. Looked at the cell phone- two voice messages.... and no minutes. After having some difficulty getting the thing to actually top up I managed to receive a 2 day old message from MrsB.... and got Brens one just as he rolled in. No sign of Ben444 or OAB. hmm. As I hadn't heard from Ben444 for a few days I figured he was a no show, but what had happened to OAB?? Tried everything I could to get hold of him, to no avail. So at 8:30 we gave up, left a message with the servo attendant and then hit the road, as time was getting on and the weather was slowly getting worse.

So we hit the road and headed for Kiakoura. A highway patrol car was doing a u-turn at the State Highway 7 turn off, to head back to Chch. He saw Bren and I. Was quite funny watching him try to decide wether or not to follow us. Fortunately he didn't. Not the we were speeding of course. Bren rode like a complete nanna all the way to Cheviot, dropping back at every corner. Then he stopped at Cheviot and looked at his rear tyre, proclaiming it now scrubbed in. Then he took off and nailed it thru the next few corners... oh, I see. All that time out at the track riding with the superbike boys while the rest of us are WORKING has definitely paid off- thru the Hunter Lees he set a cracking pace and I was working bloody hard to keep up. Got to the top with a massive case of arm pump- holding on too bloody tight AGAIN. Bren pulled over and let me go past but the arm pump was so bad I was having trouble. Shit I was knacked already and still had a looooong way to go! Pulled into Kaikoura and Bren made it pretty clear he needed to eat, so we stopped for a bit. Then Bren informed me that he still had no grip on the throttle and was 'cruising'. :o

This is where I worked my evil manipulation. Bren had seen the road ahead and thought it looked good. The weather ahead looked good as well said I. If you turn back you'll have to ride into the wind and cold again said I. That was enough. Bren decided to go the Blenheim. The wind was blowing pretty hard, and Bren had some problems with it, but with 20 extra kg the FZR barely noticed. Sometimes weight helps I guess. From about Ward into Blenheim is a magic bit of road. I'd love to be able to ride it hard without fear of getting pinged... Once we got past the end of the Seaward Kaikouras and their foot hills the weather became warm and sunny. At the rail/road bridge a bike came up behind us. Think it was an XJR1300. On a long straight the rider blasted past us and fucken near killed himself- he can't have seen the grey people mover coming the other way- honestly thought we were about to watch him and the people in the people mover die. At the last possible monet he finally saw it and swerved, while the driver of the pople mover did the same. Then the silly cock turned left down a side road seconds later... no doubt to scrape his undies clean... We got to Blenhiem, refueled and did some texting. At this point we found out what had happened to OAB. Erm... I'll leave that for him to tell. Bren had forgot his phone, so I texted his lady at the number he gave me. Wrong one wasn't it...

Again I managed to easily convince Bren to carry on to Nelson. Leaving Blenheim we had what appeared to be a plain clothes cop car baiting us. It turned out it was just some wanker in what was probably a company car- blues shirt, but no lights in the back window. So we let him get in front and then quietly dispatched him once we hit some open road traffic. We stopped at Pelorus to get some pics for proof, then carried on. Bren wanted to stop AGAIN at Rai Valley to top up. I assured him he had enough fuel, but I can understand why he was concerned- we was running track gearing and using a fair bit more juice than me. While the FZR was turning at about 4000 revs at 100, the Blade was doing 5,500 or more. I had forgotten just what a fantastic bit of road it is from Rai to Nelson. Awesome high speed sweepers with nice camber, and then you hit the Wangamoas, which would be a Sprotbikers wet dream except for the very rough surface and diesel.... I had a bit of a slide in some left over grit while well laid over. Thank god for longish wheelbases and slow steering- wasn't a problem.

Nelson was hot and fine.... as were some of the residents. :devil2: Couldn't find any Ultimate, so we filled up with whatever came to hand. I put 91 in, which I have always used as 91 has been recommended to me as 96 is supposed to be dirty. The bike ran rougher and the low rev splutter returned. Hmmm. More texting. Poor old OAB's tale of woe had me feeling quite sorry for him- it certainly would have pissed me off, but I think he will eventually find it funny.... I hope. We headed off for Murchison. Now I was in familiar territory as I have ridden or driven this road many many times. We continued our method of going quick in the bends and cruising on the straights- works well. Hooned over the Hope Saddle, and for the first time EVER I took the down hill off camber right hander on the south side quickly and with complete confidence. It feels horrible in a car, and it's always felt horrible on a bike too, but yesterday I finally got it right. Was a great feeling! And then we got to just about my favourite stretch of road anywhere- the realignment from Glenhope to Kawateri Junction. Shit that is an awesome bit of road. Continual flowing left-right-left-right high speed sweepers, ending in a nasty dreasing radius 65k corner (watch that one).

Rolled into Murchison, refueled with 96 (went better), and had some kai and a coffee. More bloody texting. Must have been 24°C- it was a fantastic day anyway. Bren took some more pics and then we hopped over to the Maruia Falls so Bren could take a look. Only a few K's up the road the temp dropped markedly and there was rain about. We encountered about 5mins of light showers and then the temp went up again at Springs. Bren topped up and then we blasted off up the Lewis Pass. A sign saying "Ice/Grit" and some evidence of the latter spoiled it a bit, but it was still a good ride. Down the south side, which is a fabulous bit of road, and then on towards Hamner. Oops, that looks like rain. Took a while to get to it, but yep it was. Didn't really hit it till we got to the Amuri Basin though. In the mean time we came upon a truck. So what? THIS truck did something rather amusing! There is a 55k down hill off camber S bend that is marked with big "SLOW DOWN" signs. The bin truck and trailer we were behind took the corner WAY too fast. The trailer actually drifted/slid, hanging out behind the truck, effectively blocking the other lane as it swept through. I could hear the tyres howling and smell the rubber burning. If anything had come the other way they would be dead. Somehow the driver kept it all together without rolling or crashing or even loosing any speed. He had a sheepish look on his face as we past...

As mentioned it rained/drizzled thru the Amuri Basin. I really need a new visor with a pinlock system. I had forgotten to do the old sunrise liquied trick before leaving home, and now couldn't see a thing! Bloody thing fogged up and if I had cracked the visor open I know from experience there would have been water on the inside of the visor too. We filled up at Culverden and carried on. As hoped, the rain cleared as we left the basin, and then we cruised back to Chch. The motorway was fairly empty and Bren looked keen for a roll on contest, so I gave the countdown and we took off in top gear... or at least I was. The FZR surged ahead by a bike length or so and stayed there. I let the revs build to just before the point where the power/torque really kick in, and then shut down for fear of loosing my licence etc. Bren came up along side and asked what gear I was in- "me 4th" he said. 4th?!?! With track gearing?!?!?! BWARHARHARHARHAR!!! The FZR rules!.... or did.... a very long time ago....

Then I had my little incident at the roundabout. No harm done. Arrived home feeling remarkably fresh... as MrsB found out later :devil2: Got the kids off to bed, had a shower, and slept the sleep of a very happy and content biker.

They guy on the bike that overtook us and wabnted to take on the people mover... what a cock, what on earth was he thinking... the truck, that was good to watch him sliding, very lucky nothing came the other way! there were some long fast corners going from blehiem to nelson at what point exactly i am not sure, but man they was GREAT!

I'd do that ride again, even though i was totally stuffed when i got home!

Would have been good to have a few more riders, maybe next time?

Yeah, I'm still pissed over it. Of all friggen things I lost my effing keys, and no spare. Up until 3am the night before looking for them, in to work twice, over to friends houses etc to no avail. Slept in yesterday, didn't get up until around lunchtime. Waste of a day, and missed out on a grouse ride (although I haven't read the report yet, probably piss me off more.)

And yes I have now found my keys, however due to embarrassment I'm not willing to say where. So it's off to the locksmith shortly to get a, or maybe two, key cut.

In the ignition
In the helmet lock/ seat lock
Attached to your car keys
In your pocket

I can only imagine how utterly pissed off you would have been. MrsB will tell you that I HATE not being able to find things...

Get so few opportunities to get out for a decent ride, I'm going to call a sick day next time one comes, consequences be damned. Life passes me by too quickly here at work, ever get that feeling??

Ye gods am I in trouble! :dodge:
I just figured out what it cost...
Bearing in mind that the tank was empty when I filled up in Chch and is now 50 to 70% full.... the estimate is $40 or so on food...... and $100 or so fuel. We wont even think about tyres at $0.18 per k..... :gob: :thud:
So unless you're made of money take some play lunch :corn: and take it easy on the loud handle
