View Full Version : Car vs Bike inequalities

So Im watching Top Gear and they take the new Aston martin DB9 GT car around the track (the DBR9?) and they claim it does 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds. I have read that a CB900 Hornet claims 0-100km/h in 2.7secs. You can buy a Hornet new for $10990, the DB9 is more than 200,000 pounds (you cant buy this car but the retail version is 175K).
I realise that theres more to the inequalities/differences than this but the difference is quite startling.

The bike is less than a tenth of the cost and performs (in a straight line) better. It was an observation, wasnt looking for answers or anything. Wasnt it obvious?

dunno.. you kind of sound surprised..
The Aston weighs a heck of a lot even after a ton of reduction. It's bulky and has a lot of metal to get moving. A bike has a fraction. Just work out the power to weight ratio for one.
Out on the track tho (life isn't only about getting to 100), it's a debatable different story, which has been covered heaps by all sorts, and will never be resolved. So go buy a 1000cc bike for a fraction of a porsche, and just laugh at how much change you get, and the fact you can pull wheelies. They'll then in turn, laugh at you when you get soaking wet, and the new chick you've just pulled doesn't want to get on the back.. go figure

Sure its pretty obvious why, you could argue that you cant take your mates on the back of your bike and get the same speed (unless youre sad) but thats another story. Was cool to see a SLK AMG take on Sparky Bills (R1) the other day and get REAL loose off the line. He did pretty well all told.

Download the Ducati 999 vs Lambo Gallerado or something. Both had good pilots, and the 999 only bet the Lambo by 0.1 of a second. It was amazingly close. It was on 5th Gear (not as good as Top Gear) Even though it was a superexpensive 999, it was still a 10th of the price...

I'd love to see the famous personality they bring on one week to do the lap time to say "Actually I want to do it on a bike". Hey, if Doctor Who can insist on driving an automatic then why not?
Just got to find a famous person who can ride a bike well. Any suggestions?

The whole point is the personalities do it in the same car,ok,so Dr Who drove an auto version of the same car,big deal.Damon Hill beat everyone, but they disaloud his time,Damon Hill could of asked to ride around on a bike as he raced bikes before turning to cars....and playing guitar in his own band.Top Gear is not about bikes,it's about cars - if bikes were important they would have their very own show....guess they aren't then eh? The Aston was built for a specific racing series,I thought it looked, sounded and went fucking well....I wonder....I wonder, what would the expression look like on skelstar's face look like after a lap in that thing with the Stig? Contempt at the gutless slow car,or wobbly legs and a shit eating grin?

Theres no doubt about it, it would be 'wobbly legs and a shit eating grin'. I never ment to show contempt...
That DB9 did sound awesome though...it def handled the hammerhead etc extremely well. Quite impressive.

Astons depreciate in the UK like Jap imports here. The first years loss would pay for several sprotbikes.
BTW that Aston was a race car, full carbon body etc. You can't buy one.
And even if you could, it can't filter.

I have read that a CB900 Hornet claims 0-100km/h in 2.7secs.
The Hornet is obviously a weapon machine as it is apparently quicker than a Hayabusa on the quarter mile (previous thread) and now apparently quicker to 100kmh as well.
see http://www.hyp4r.com/hayabusa/performance.htm for some Hayabusa specs
I realise that different machines are often released into different markets and there are a variety of other factors which would influence actual times, however In the interests of accuracy can we please have at least some substantiation of quoted figures.

F1 cars absolutely whip the GP bikes round a track.
I guess the reason is that F1 cars use the aerodynamic effect to push the car down, like a plan upside down, so that they can drive much faster around corners. Plus they have four large wheels, so the grip that keeps you on track is much higher. I don't know: how many Gs can MotoGP bike handle?

Before you go racing a superduper car, check out the drivers who own them in NZ - by the time you can afford one here you have lost the ability to drive them, and to service the girls who are attracted to them,it'd be cruel to try.But in Europe where the market they are aimed for is,it's possible you might be taking on someone who far exceeds your skill....F1 drivers and the like, like to scoot around in them.Cars and bikes are for different purposes and markets,I can never see the point in comparrisons....unless you have some sort of ego problem....

Dead right, different strokes for different folks....
Kinda logic used in some of these arguments is like me saying my F100 is better 'cos I can carry 50 dozen beer on the back of it and I don't get wet when it rains so it must be better than a bike.

Ever noticed how contrived the comparisons are though? Last night there was a race between a very nice McLaren Benz gee wizz superfast car, and the other two zapping about on planes and boats.
One had a sleep (which to be fair he needed) and the others experienced all manner of breakdowns and other gaffs...
The sleep could have been shorter, the others should not have had the breakdowns yada yada yada. Too many variables, a complete waste of time and money in respect of a proper test.

Yeah, its kind of a pity knowing that they surely engineer these 'races' to be exciting at the end. I watched the 'swiss alps' episode (Ferrari I think) with a bunch of girls one evening (no innuendo please) worrying about them missing out on watching 'Pop Idol' :whocares: and found that they all REALLY enjoyed the 'race' the top gear-dudes were having. Clearly a bit contrived really.

In Aussie mag Motorcycle news was an article on a 600+hp $500,000 Porsche with Gemballa mods (fastest road going Porsche in Oz). Versus a stock R1 with sticky rubber.
Equivalent driver/rider (racers), Bike kicked its ass at the track to the tune of 1.5+ seconds a lap.
Previously the mag had a comparison of a Porsche versus a GSXR1000 K5 and the Porsches optional ceramic brake option cost more than the bike!!!
Bikes have trouble matching open wheeler race cars with big downforce but are more than capable of beating the rest.

nah, this isn't going to be an advertised thing persay. It'll be very hush for obvious reasons, but wouldn't mind a couple of people helping out with cam stuff.. Anyway, that's just detail at the moment.. Just thought it'd be a good challenge to see what the deal was.
And I know a lot of riders here and not-here, that would do the loop in a blink. If you could find a car driver the same way, then great, but doubtful. So just to keep it more level, I hardly know the loop, and Postie doesn't, so it's hardly an advantage.. Just thought it'd be fun

They put him in a seperate category.

Now Jimmy Webb is a stand-up comedian, so to be 0.6 behind is no laughing matter.
Great program, anyway.
The F1 cars will always win. Braking is a huge advantage, having 4 wheels as is the grip from the amount of rubber in contact with the ground. As mentioned, the aerodynamics of wings are important too, even though the bike may have a higher power to weight ratio

I know that a even a supercar can't overtake where a bike can, and in summer traffic that's all it takes.
Even Schumacher himself would be stuffed if he was stuck behind 15 cars following a campervan.
One consistant criticism of Lamborghini's, Ferrari's et all is that they are too wide for the average country road.

Piha run is quite short tho, and the good twistie bits towards Piha are too residential, which is a shame, cos that's where it starts getting good.
I've seen cars get down to the beach and have smoke pouring from their brakes before. Also had chronic fade in a car too.
The thing with the loop, is that it's littered with awesome twisty sections, and some very fast sections with long sweepers in. It's a good long mix. Well, if not the loop, then a good section of it.. I prefer the west side at the moment, but I'll have to do the loop a few more times, just to confirm it..
I've never actually done the whole loop. I've gone up the west coast and east coast a few times, but turned back for one reason or another. So have to complete the loop some time soon.. Against a car would be fun tho

Clarkson hates bikes simple as that. Shit test with the CBR600, not very fair.
Grip would have been a problem, the rider looked like he wasn't giving it much in the corners.....possibly needed a few laps to warm tires. Car beat it but not by a lot.
The Atom has given a crescent suzuki a run for its money in an english car mag - EVO i think. Think they were pretty even. Atom beat a stock GSXR1000 by quite a bit. The Crescent 1000 was kicked by the Radical SR3 a road legal race car which was the fastest car of the bunch that day.
The Atom was the slower version though.....not the 300hp, 500kg high spec jobbie thats now available.
I drove the 240hp version and its damn fast......0-100km/hr in 3.5secs or thereabouts. Very quick and lightning fast response.

I came across a Mirage the other day - that thing was absolutely on fire!
The burned out shell's still sitting down the end of our street...

is (was) it a black car, and the back burnt out and the front just has a dent in the bumper, but generally not too bad for something that's been on fire..?? And the interior is completely gutted? Parked on the side of the main road

There was a rumour that Stroud did an unofficial 56.5 - 57 sec lap during practice for the Puke endurance race.

I would of liked to take on a bike on a twisty road in my Charade Turbo, for a $100 car it fucking kicked arse! I don't think a $100 motorcycle would get anywhere near it.Pity a bus took it out....

We all know that that's what it looked like BEFORE Motu got around to doing the mods. Here's what it looked like shortly before the crash. \/\/

lol.. it's not a price vs machine test.. Besides, Postie paid a third for the car of what I paid for the bike.. Is it worth asking more questions on it? engine, mods etc?
2L Turbo, 4wd, 1087.5kg's pushing out about 210kw at the front & rear lsd equipped wheels, 12.5@111mph with tyre issues...

Assuming the rider has got the stones to try and launch hard enough, yup, then corners get involved, and it's all over for the bike :-)
