Hi all,
I'm looking to buy a DRZ400SM around the 5k mark. What have you got?
Thanks.

Pick up a cheap E model and throw some supermoto rims on. E model is lighter and more powerful.

I'm not sure what sumo rims to get. There's almost no drz sumo rims for sale. Also brake rotors different etc. Priced it up with aftermarket rims and sprockets, rotor etc and it came to around 5k. Which is what I'd pay for an SM anyway.

Dude!! He listed it for around 5500 to start with then dropped the price. It sold by the time i saw. I was so gutted.

That's boring. Nothing beats my 2010 r1. I just need a sumo as a daily. My GSR600 is boring

You are correct in your thinking. I am on my third DRZ sm. Fat underpowered lump that is just great fun! Easily modifiable, reliable, and cool in traffic and twisties. Under rated IMHO.

Totally agree. I did look at the other motards like WR, Husky and KTMs but the service intervals are too short, need rebuilds and parts are expensive.I do about 400 km a week. Got my last drz for 5500 with 12000kms so hoping for another deal like that again.

Go look at the Husky 701
Only slightly out of your price range :D
Seriously considering picking up the enduro version....

That is sooo nice... I just can't justify that $ on a motard though. Kinda hanging out for the MT-10 actually.

Thanks for that! It was on my watchlist but expired, looks like he's relisted and wants less $ now. Will get in touch

I have a 2016Sm, airbox mod and rejet make it a MUCH nicer bike to ride. So much fun

I used to think that was right, until I got an E with the bigger pumper carb and agressive cams... night and day difference in the bike ... rejet never did that for my old SM

E cams and carb in an Sm does it too ;-)

exactly! you could pick these up off a wrecked E for cheap as chips, would make your SM a real DRZ! well worth the swap

Thanks, seen those two. Not quite what I'm after. The 2nd one has high kms for my liking.

Yeah could be an option on the next one I get. I'm not after power though. More after reliability.

Yeah saw that one, not a fan.
It's so hard to find one that isn't so highly priced!!

They are really good bikes, bit of a benchmark really. All boxes ticked.
You might have to grit your teeth buying a good one but you will smile selling it. If you look after it.

Better off with an E with road tyres surely?
Cant take an SM anywhere interesting, and E's cope ok with road and go places challenging without breaking sweat.
E model got way more power etc,,
KLX same as E and got best of both worlds and cheaper too.

The SMs seem to be more sought after and also I prefer to hit the twisties on an SM rather than off roading, the road tyres feel a lot nicer for that.

Comparing apples with oranges. I would never have an E converted to an SM, unless the $$ and development on the suspension had been done, despite the extra power. The SM is streets apart from the E on road and simply adding 17 inch rims and road tyres would be a big compromise. Likewise running distanzas or shinko 705s on an SM won't turn it into a trail bike. 18/21in dual sport tyres make the E into an ok road bike. The SM is a fat hooligan in the Same environment.

having had both (3 actually) i'd get another E with the S subframe any day even if I was only doing road riding. new springs and a fork brace all it needs to feel tighter on the road than the SM with an engine that is so much more fun and torquey throughout the whole rev range. cheaper tires too and easier to swap, lighter and more agile on the road also. but yeah... either way Suzuki are champs, they own the 400 DS market, hope NZ never goes euro compliant so we can still get the DRZ for a few more years
