Rusted fuel cap on GN250

I bought my first bike in December, a red little GN250 I affectionately call Ruby. Though recently I've been calling it lots of other things I shouldn't put in writing.

After spending more than a quarter of what I paid for the bike getting it up and running - the fuel cap is now rusted and I can't get it open.

The key turns and while playing around I pulled the whole key column thingy out, so it's not the lock mechanism, more the bits than need to retract to let me get the cap off. Any tips or tricks?

First bike and I'm in no way a bike mechanic, no tools - have the Motorcycle Dr on speed dial...

OK, big pinch of salt with this, having never done this before... if the key column's out, that means you've got direct access to the release mechanism. See if you can figure out how the mechanism works, in particular, go looking for shiny, worn, or broken metal. It may be possible to get the tank cap to release by using a flat-bladed screwdriver in the right place, then you can get the whole thing off at the hinges and replace or repair.

Thanks Guys - and don't worry I didn't take any notice of Axelahole's posts (can't remember the actual user name).

i used a flat head screw driver and managed to get the mechanism to work and get it off, took the whole thing apart cleared a bit of the rust and put it back together and it's working well now.

The flat head screw driver has been added to my backpack though - so if you see a chick on a red GN at the gas station using a screwdriver to get her gas cap off say hi!
