Got an old bike here I'm restoring, and I'd like to remove the VIN plate to paint the frame. PO also went over the VIN plate with a wire brush, so I'd like to get a new one while I'm at it (but, to be honest, I don't really care all that much if getting a new one is a pain in the ass). Has anyone got any experience with removing/reattaching VIN plates, and having new ones re-issued?

You may want to understand the legality before you get too far into the idea https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/light-vehicle-repair/vehicle-identification/vin-and-chassis-number

drill out the rivetts, use dental floss to break the glue or they crumple, repaint and re rivet. I moved mine to behind the sidecover frame as lazy VTNZ tyre kicker put it out on the exposed frame.
Wof guy says" funny place to put it, have to take the cover off to see it" er....like opening a bonnet on a car?

Ducati riveted one straight into the beautiful lines of the trellis frame. I have yet to forgive them for not placing it somewhere discrete like on the inside of the rear sub-frame or similar.

If you have a 17 digit NZ Vin starting 7A........ you can get a new vin plate made by any entry certifier VTNZ etc. the cost is $75 for a VIN approval .
