So you put your licence on hold.

While it is on hold are you able to take it off hold for say three days to ride over a weekend (so pay three days worth of rego)?

EDIT I meant Rego

Are you sure you don't mean re licence

I doubt you can do that, however some on here say you can get a month on hold if you do it manually, rather than the online re licence site

You certainly can do that. There are limits though

You need to fill out an MR23A form and licence the vehicle for as few days as just 1 if ya like. But ya can't do it repeatedly. I can't remember how long it has to be on hold between licensed periods.

Looking at my latest renewal it looks like you could re-register for a month. It does not have an option for anything less. Info is online.

no. you do actually mean licencing.

of a continuous vehicular variety.

registration is the process whereby you give "your" vehicle to the goverment.

that was in response to this.

Good to know. The reminder form used to list "other" as an option, now it says month.

I think, but should not be trusted, that rego has to be on hold for a minimum of 3 months between re-licensing periods.

...a mate of mine bought two days rego/licence to do a flit around the South with some mates...somehow, maybe he didn't put it straight back on hold, but it turned to drama of the financial kind and he ended up having to backdate his payment, a few months later when he went to re-licence for the summer...it cost him dearly in the end...beware of wankers in bureaucratic positions...and more to the point;... Why would you give a fuck about one day?...

If you only want one day for a special event, why pay for more?

If he's not using it, why should he register it?

Form MR23A sounds about right, you need to go to VTNZ or the like to get it.

As said, yes, you can licence for a day. No, it's not that economic. When you put a vehicle on hold, it has to be for a minimum of 3 months, otherwise you'll back pay.

So:
Reg expires, you place on hold (this can be for any length of time, but if a short period then you need to keep doing it. I believe you can hold for a year, but pull off after 3 months?)
- minimum of 3 months pass -
You buy vehicle licence for 2 days
You place the vehicle on hold
- minimum of 3 months pass -

and so on.

I think that's right, but mine are licenced 12 months a year.

It works well if you have different bikes for different seasons or have more than one of the same bike......

It works extremely well for registering your bike for a day so at least you have the current year on your rego label.

Thanks everyone.

I have my bike registered now through to August.

The plan I think now will be to maybe put rego on hold in May next year for three months (don't ride much between May and August) but it is good to know the options.

Throw it on hold for 12 months, you can take it off hold anytime after 3 months.
That way if you let things slide for say five months you don't have to pay anything, unlike if you had only put it on hold for the three months.

Is this really KB? Someone knows the difference between registering a vehicle and licencing a vehicle...

As for the use of that Australian slang word: rego...

As an option (and Gremlin probably already knows this), I understand that the three month minimum doesn't apply if the registered owner changes. So you can re-license within three months without paying the back fees if you change the owner first e.g. to a family member.

I've never done it since I'd end up with a bike with a lot of ownership changes, which could affect the resale value.

On hold with the right year showing, FTW. :)

I've got no vehicles regestered in my name. Bikes have dead plates, drive a work vehicle.

this only works if the vehicle is on hold. if not on hold with outstanding licencing fees then the last registered person will get a bill for the outstanding amount after change of ownership
