Another Honda CB200 journey

Collected this almost complete 1976 Honda CB200 from a shed his weekend.
Engine turns over, only missing a left hand side cover. Needs a restoration which should be fun.
I would have liked one at University, but a 60s Honda C92 had to do.
I accept it is of pedestrian performance, some may call it a POS, others will tell me to much rust but I feel it is worthwhile project for an old bloke.
Not interested in altering it, just a top to bottom restoration. So guys I might be seeking some help.
Should have running in 6 months or so. Like F5 Dave's project with his Stinger it may take longer.
It still has the The Honda City, Wellington yellow sticker on the mud guard - how do I save that when I re-chrome the guard.

Just hope the photo comes up......not sure if I am doing it correctly.

...admirable thing to do to another classic...I have fond memories of my bro in law doing numerous big rides on his...600 to a 1000 ks round the little block or the big one...noisy as with short Brit megaphones on it...econohonda will look after you...google them...

My First bike was a red CB200.

Loved it - I was the king!

Changed the bars for flat ones - took ages as the cables on the originals run through the bars. Anyone still do that?

I changed the mufflers to rowdy chrome cocktail shaker ones - reckon I gained at least 5hp :2thumbsup



Nice to see one being cleaned up. There was a clean original one on TM a while back. Reasonable price I thought. Maybe do you homework on the dollars you may spend as they don't fetch huge money in good form.

My folks bought me one for my 15th bday - i got my car license the day of my birthday and my motorbike license 5 days later. I lived on bombay hill and went to school in papakura. The folks got sick of taking me to rugby practice and stuff so I rode to school every day for a year.

It was a great bike..I loved it too pieces. Forgot to put oil in it though... with the inevitable outcome...

Looks like the main requirement has been met, it's all there, nice to hear it's going to be restored instead of buggered about with.

I've got a similar project on, and it's in a similar state to what you have there, will probably end up spending more than it's worth but someone needs to save a few of them.

Looking forward to updates as it progresses.

Great to hear those old stories about the memories of this model Honda.
I am doing a restoration, so cost does not matter nor does return on investment.
Just an older bloke that would like to spend more time in the shed.
This bike dismantling will start later this month, I have a Suzuki Tf125 Mudbug to finish and get running. And a Te20 (Fergie 28) tractor to make mobile.
Then I will start the bike, whilst working on the boat for its annual overhaul.
Not bad, a two stroke, couple of four strokes and a diesel for the next two or three months. Should keep me busy.
To most folk they maybe junk, but they are great to work on, and I learn something most days.

Some of you may remember The Honda City outfit in Wellington. Not from Wellington I did not have a clue they existed until I collected the bike.
But this is the sticker on the front mudguard. I am taking on the suggestion in making a copy for the refurbished mud guard.

Are you going to do a motor rebuild?
I have a 74 cb200 with the front drum brake which is in need of an engine rebuild one day.
Will be interesting to see how you get on.
Mine was my first bike and I loved it. Got knocked off it by a drunk driver on ponsonby rd years ago, Bent my clubman bars which pissed me off cos like someone else has mentioned, getting the wiring through the bars was a bitch.

Not to sure whether I will do a full motor recon or just a top end, rings and valves.
My plan is to strip the bike down and redo the frame, mudguards, tank and seat.
The wiring looks like it could do with a spruce up........
If the motor runs well, then may just run it until a recon is a must do. But that will be months away.
The engine turns over, and used to run very well I am told, although I have yet to run it.
Just watch this space. I am hoping it will be low cost do up, but these things can demand more effort.
