whats the difference from cable and hydraulic?

my bike ( gixxer 750) has a hydraulic clutch and i havnt looked at the latest 750 but ost bikes are cable operated. whats the difference is it for weight?
or performance or just easier to build or im a dumb prick and its none of the above.

it is simpler to get a light action using hydraulics, but the reality probably lies more in sales gimmickery than mechanics.

That is interesting as my 01 GSXR 750 has a cable clutch...my mates VTR is hydraulic tho

i have heard (and not sure how much truth is in this) that a cable operated clutch has more feel than a hydraulic one , also a hydraulic one is better for clutches with heavier springs,,,,

from another point of view it would be easier to route a hydraulic line than a cable as the cable would have to be rather smooth in its path where hyraulic lines can get tighter curves etc

My bikes got cable disc brakes front and back. And an auto clutch. Now thats technology for you. :niceone:

After riding with cable clutches for all of my riding life, it was a pleasant change when I got the YZF at the start of the year, it has a much more direct feel.

As said before and I am just re-iterating before this gets too off track. Its mainly the feel and lighter play. Personally I still like cable.

I replaced the cable clutch on one of the Nordies with a Magura hydro one and it's more progressive, self adjusting and has a much lighter action.

And looks cool.

my Zed has hydro and my Gixer has cable... i like the hydro, esp for long rides as its soft and easy to handle (a god send after 400km sitting on your wrists!) and for the lack of maintenance but, there is no feel and until you get use to it there is an chance of looking like an idiot at intersections! :dodge:

so cable is good for feeling the throttle and i suppose if your one of those jokers who fans it when riding it would work well.

What I was getting at is that in real life, some cable-operated clutches are lighter and/or have better feel than some hydraulic clutches, and vice-versa. In theory, a hydraulic clutch should have a lighter action than a cable, but this is not always the case - there being too many other variables.
