There was a young fella who used to come along on the wednesday night rides on a zeal, seemed to punt along ok, they go about the same as all the other 250/4 jappas just with less plastic.

no - completely orthodox inline 4. Chain driven cams.
The problem with going 250/4 as you well know is that they've all been thrashed since arriving in NZ.
Best thing you can do for someone starting out is go for a modern LAMS bike.
Yes, most are like small appliances - and just as boring - but a newbie needs to just get out there and ride.

yeah but... this oll broard is older than me, single perant and has only 3k to spend, keen to get to rallys, never ridden a bike in her life, put her 9yr old on my boys xr50 and she had is sussed, bit worried mum might be a bit different...
I dont like the 250/4 engine gota rev the tit out of it to just get rolling, VTR250 farking mint... 500 twin even beter... but SFA on tardme, there is a zeal tho lowish k's good price.
Hate the GN250 ok for learning the clutc etc, but on the road bad COG etc no guts...

trouble is, the riding gear will have to come out of that $3k as well.
