so in few weeks i want to head off on a look around the South Island, avoiding main roads as much as possible.
Probably leave Nelson, head down the West Coast, cross over somewhere or go round the bottom and stooge up the East Coast.
Planning on hitting as many huts as possible to minimise the use of a tent, not because I dont like tenting (thats a lie), but because I like huts. Been to a fair few already, on previous expeditions,,still plenty more the bucket list.
Wont be travelling fast, or flash. Prefer quiet places, dislike crowds.
No fixed plan or itinerary, just gonna wing it.
Bit of occasional company or tour guide be good, or someone to help push in the tricky bits.
Does the Pope shit in the woods?

Nice one Muzz, I have to agree with, huts are great to mix in with a ride.
Here’s my two cents if it helps your trip any…
You are heading off at a good time, most of the huts see few visitors in these months. I’ve just returned from a trip spending time in huts down south and had them all to myself =) Through summer, I normally aim to tent as the huts are often busy; or full.
While a good number of the 900 DOC huts are accessible by vehicle with some areas have numerous hut options close by, there are many stretches of the South Island where there are long distances between vehicle accessible huts. Carrying a tent as a backup is key.
Nearly every vehicle accessible hut is on RemoteMoto, this should be great to help you plan your epic trip.
Keep us in the loop when you head off, in October fly fishing season kicks off so I’ll be out and about, it’d be great to meet up and join you for a leg or two.
Best of luck with the trip planning mate!

Not many huts/shelters on the west Coast,, ironic that theres more chance of needing one there really......
tent will be carried but only used grudgingly.

hey man, I recently drove 80% off rd from picton to chch via the west coast, awesom tracks but very little on the way in huts, for them you have to head inland and usually as far as a bike goes a dead end.
Ill post up tonight the routes if I remember

I don't see anything active on the Landsborough River but some other near by maybe?

Hi Muzz,
Always a spot here if you're passing. If the house is too soft I'm sure we could clear out the garden shed. ;-) We will be away for Philip Island late Oct but let me know if u need a key regardless. Cheers, M.
