View Full Version : are you a nodder or a waver

dawnrazor

fellow biker coming towards you, do you nod, wave, ignore. I only ask cos I've found myself becoming a compulsive nodder, and recently found myself nodding at a cop bike, nothing strictly wrong with that i suppose, but it felt strange, think he got a shock as well!
Hopefully I won't turn into a waver :spudwave:

Prefer to wave, cos its easier to see.
But will nod if my hands need to be on the bars, like a corner. Or the wheelies I want to be able to do one day :devil2:

I wave most times.... but if I find I cant wave due to the situation then I will nod.

I also wave/nod to the police on bikes/cars, the ambo's and firebrigade cos one day we may just need them.

Well if you waver too much or vigorously you may fall off. :laugh:

If they nod I'll normally nod, or if they wave I'll normally wave...

except in the obvious wheelie/kneeslider type situations already mentioned... :whistle:

wuss..
Best time I've seen a wave back for me, was being passed by a couple of the lads in the liter club. On the 22, a tight fast left hander, I was (had been) backing off the pace a little (not that that made much difference) so the guy I was with could catch up (had his missus on the back), and these two guys pass around the outside of me, knee draging on the floor hard, and still had time for a thumbs-up on the way past.. that was pretty cool.. By the time I knocked down a couple of gears to see if I could catch up, they were long gone..

I wave if there's time, or on the motorway, cos a nod gets lost at that pace/distance, and when I'm passing another bike too, else it's a nod

Again nothing wrong with waving, I generally do my waving if I'm wafting on the open road, but in general I like to keep my hands on the bars and go for the big obvious nod instead

Not that it matters (does it?!?), but I used to wave, but now almost exclusively nod. No wait - that's not true. On the highway (and sometime on byways, but not usually), I'll wave, particularly if there's plenty of time and/or I'm not undertaking some tricky manouevre, like adjusting summat, interacting with the pillion, feeding more deuterium crystals into the warp core or whatever.

I have somewhat of a philosphical conundrum though, as sometimes nodding makes me feel cool, suave even, but mostly it makes me feel like a noddy. Waving usually makes me feel somewhat cheery, except when the wavee ingores me, then I feel pissed off, which doesn't happen when I'm cool/suave/nodding.

Know what you mean, probably why I go for the full on nod - but I suspect I look like one of those demented nodding dogs you used to see on car dash boards

Currently I do neither but I feel my hand trying to lift when passing other bikers (my deathgrip wont let it leave the bars though). So I think I'll be a waver ... one day :eek5:

What he said.

I always like to wave, especially in situations where there's not many bikes around. But if cornering hard, or there's other difficulties, I at least try to nod.

I'm not one of the "wave when waved to" types - I like to wave to everyone.

I find that bikers are split into four roughly equal groups:
Those that wave first;
Those that wave back;
Those that ignore you;
Those that stare hard at you, as if to say "Why are you waving at me - do I know you?"

Waver (i wave first) or the bird if you don't wave,especially if your riding a piece of American iron.

Not unlike the four types of people we can all be divided into when we eat asparagus;
Those whose piss stinks afterwards and they can smell it
Those whose piss stinks afterwards and they can't smell it
Those whose piss doesn't stink after but can smell it off other peoples piss
Those whose piss doesn't stink after but can't smell it off other peoples piss

True

sorry don't know where that came from, but interesting all the same, now if I can inly think of some way of making this relevent to biking....hmmmm

umm... when you are going through an intersection, wave at bikers on either side (and I suspect) a car thinks I am letting them in (I wave to cars?? :weird:). Oh and I am doing 65ish, and they are doing 10... :crazy:

unless very free and nothing can happen I now nod. Dozy cagers never see that unless you repeat several times when letting them through a gap...

Horses for courses for me... sometimes it's a leisurely wave, sometimes a nod, sometimes I completely ignore them (I figure I'll live longer if I concentrate while lane-splitting).

Get some good waves from cops every now and then. Best one was a uniform station wagon on the road to Martinborough as I was hurriedly shaving the speed limit off my speed to bring me down to the speed limit again, he flashed his (head)lights and waved. Nice guy. Unlike that tosser HP another day on another road who thought he'd be friendly by waving his red and blues and brake lights as well... he soon realised that sorta waving doesn't make people wanna hang round for a coffee.

I will wave if it's a clear road in front and I'm going in a straight line. If Im going hard through some twisties I will do the upward nod, you know, the Cher Bro nod.
Funny how I always feel like a right dick if they dont wave back. :wavey:

nodding just doesnt feel right. I wave to all sportsbikes. not scooters or criusers (sorry guys) and do the big ignore thing if I am cornering at speed. If I am just cruising then you can happierly wave while cornering.

Bit of both, depends on the situation. Don't wave or nod to 'Harleys', givin up trying with that lot. :whocares:

I wave where Im able to do so safely. Otherwise its a nod. I try to acknowledge evey other biker I come across on the road.
I have noticed lately that there is less people returning the nod or wave, I dont get pissed off if they dont wave or nod I just like the "gidday" factor when its a nod or wave both ways.

Yep, I just do the big clumsy nod.

Might give waving a go, tomorrow.

Zed
4th October 2005, 19:20
I'm changeable. I nod, wave, salute, whatever grabs their attention. Sometimes I don't acknowledge them at all and feel really stink when at the last millisecond they wave or nod at me but it's too late for me to respond. :doh:

Personally I hate the unpredictability of it all. I would much rather *everyone* nod or wave at eachother or us all just ignore eachother...hmmm, then again, I may feel differently about it tomorrow! :confused:

What he said. I wave to everyone , even Ducatisti, though they never reciprocate .Snobbish lot, them. Or at least nod , or finger wave , unless I don't see you until too late, or am too busy negoitiating a survival protocol between idiot A, homocidal maniac B , and doddery old idiot C

I wave unless I'm actively using the clutch or in a situation where precise control is required.

Also wave at the police, ambos, fire service.

I often feel the need to give a special, one fingered, "wave" to trucks - especially if they have just pulled out in front of me.

(I am well aware that those on this forum who drive trucks, vans and 4x4's are very biker-savvy and keep an eye out for bikes - just as I do when I have to drive a cage - but believe me when I say that you're the exceptions, not the rule.)

I climb up onto the seat of my bike and give a "cheerleader" style hoolla to other bikers and a brown eye to other irritating cage drivers (normally in a merc, beemer or volvo!)

Is there a switch for that on the ST's dashboard? :spudwhat:
What about the mood thing - is there a moodometer between the tachometer and speedometer?

Never have liked taking my hands of the the bars but there are exceptions but wavings not one of them. Sometimes just wag my four right hand fingers while keeping the palm on the throttle grip. Nod sometimes. But if I'm in traffic or on a bend that requires my full attention socializing on the road is the last of my prioties.

Over the last couple of weeks I've added the two fingered salute to those riders who think it's their right to be on my side of the road when passing tin tops without allowing enough passing space and expecting me to pull over to the left. Wankers. :ar15:
