hi everyone i'm looking to buy a bike with a maximum budget of 5k but will prefer to spend 3k.
i want to do everything on it but don't care to much about motor cross or real technical riding over big rocks and hill climbs and stuff. what i enjoy the most is tracks that have hard dirt with lots of twists and turns that you can absolutely gun it round. i'm new to the whole motor bike language so i don't actually know what i want to do is called so if you have an idea of the name that, it'll be great too.
i would like a powerful bike but will prefer it to have a more forgiving throttle like an xr 250 but still be able to have the power of a yzf 250 when you want it.
i have had plenty of experience on bikes and have had a kdx 200 for a few years so i know how to ride bike well enough to to handle the power of yzf. I'm also 17 if that helps too
so what bike do you guys recommend i buy :)

You can pick up an older KTM 300 exc for around the 2k mark often.

KTM 300EXC in Canty area, you might be able to talk down the price a few hundred if you play hard to get.
Unless you are looking at getting a dual sport bike instead, something road legal?

There is a Suzuki something something dirter that sits on the main road through Lincoln with a for sale sign on it most weekends. $2500 I think the sign says.
Worth a look - been for sale for a while now so may be open to a haggle (or not thus still for sale).

It's a drz400, year 2000, I think.

If you know how a KDX rides, what is it lacking for you now?
A 300exc will give you more (a lot) of everything, pulls really well unlike a moto x motor but still has an eye watering top end. Light, too.
Any 2t enduro in that class ticks the same boxes, weapons of choice for hard enduro. The most versatile off roaders.
A 400/450 4t has big power, everywhere, but can be happily buzzed along, they do stall easier and can be pricks to kick start when hot. Also a tad heavier, slightly less agile but more grip from the linear power delivery. Higher (expensive) maintenance for the really fruity models. They sap your energy quicker when pushing on IMHO.
In your price bracket you need to decide which side of the fence you sit (4t / 2t) and find the best bike for your dollar. Your not going to marry it, so low hours, well maintained, not mangled etc counts for more than performance specs on the internet.
Their are a host of bikes which will blat along easier trails, no big logs, rock faces, big jumps etc but I guarantee that you will want to improve your skills some how. So consider how your "wants" may change in the future to save yourself upgrading in a year or two. Unless your minted.

Just my 10 cents worth.
Think about more $$ in your purchase.
If your looking for some more adventure riding stuff, you should consider that within a short time you will be looking at/for a 2-5 day ride and you can find a 650-990 cc bike (across all brands) that will do the distance comfortably, be reliable enough as a daily ride, and hit the rough stuff, with everything you need to Cary.
Unless you have a follow vehicle with all the stuff you need to eat, sleep, wear, tools to Cary, these size bikes will load up better than a 125-300cc bike and have a bit more in the throttle to get out of a title spot at speed on the motorway.

He's 17, he doesn't want a big heavy shitter.
Find a decent condition enduro bike and leave some for the repairof various bearings, a piston kit etc andit sshould treat you well. Small and light will suit best. A KTM or GasGas wil. Be a good choice. 250, 200 or 300 all have their merits.
I had a kdx till I took a ride on EC200 GG and it felt like it was from another century. Because it was. Replaced by an 07 GG300 which cost $5k about 5 years ago.
I wasn't as keen on the 250 as it was too aggressive. If Iwere 17 that would pprobably be a selling point. People will tell you alsorts of rubbish about part supply and reliability of euro bikes. There'sbeen aabout ten GG through my mates in last decade and they've been super reliable.

That's good to know. Some cheap GG's out there because of the companies woes.

Its like Ducati, in and out of receivership, new owners etc, but no excuse not to buy one. Consumables are easy from aftermarket and brakepads, air filters same as CR250.

I think we're singing off the same song sheet,
Problem with the smaller cc is the top end speed, is 90-100kph max
And your running the motor harder, so it's going to be less reliable faster.
Maria Doll won the Dakar in the women's competition, on a 650cc and 1200cc a couple dozen times, she's 5'2 and weighs about 55kg
So if a chic can do it on a 14 day solo race our 17 y/o lad should be able to adapt.

Hesus!! If I got to 100kph in the dirt it would be just the once. I've spent enough time in hospital. I've watched Dakar stuff and read about it. But there's nowhere in the country like that. Have you actually trail ridden recently?

Not, I hasten to add that I've been involved..
Edit: and I'm also a firm advocate of dirt bikes for dirt work.
Editedit: Should I be trying to sell my 525 here?...... 17...... first dirt bike...... maybe not.

Yup, quite a bit.
Currently training for the Criss birch 5 day Ktm rally in December.
Each to his own I guess. Good luck on your bike hunt

Back when Desert Storm was originally, and Tussock buster currently is, is still nothing like Dakar.

Aye. Unlike the Maungatuk there's enough room to see 100kph fairly regularly, though.

That Suzuki is still in Lincoln - on the main road $2500. Good start.
