So - while we are well equipped for industrial scale camping we have detected a need for a super lightweight 2 person hiking / bike packing tent...
Granted there are many fine outdoor merchants in NZ but basically it would be cheaper to get a chopper to drop in a log cabin than buy one of their tents....
Anyone bought something half decent off shore. I meant they are all bloody made in China anyway...

How long do you want it to last?
If you want it to last 10 years of hard use and pay $100 for it you are out of luck. I bought a expensive Kathmandu one 14 years ago and it looks new. Prior to that I had a Kiwi made Macpac for 20 years that I sold because it was a touch small.
Gets what ya pay for.

Was looking at a MACPAC tunnel tent. Hated shit blowing over and getting soggy and interrupting my beauty sleep years ago.
I think I'm allergic to tents now.

In an ideal world you do indeed get what you pay for but some units I looked at seemed a bit over priced...

That's the current plan... I find it a bit odd that most outdoor retailers constantly have sales... Makes me think RRP is a tad inflated...

A few of the bigger chains have been prosecuted for exactly that.
Hasn't changed anything.

TOP TIP: Go to a campsite which has had a "music festival" in the last year (Coroglen tavern, etc, etc) and ask if anyone has left a tent behind.
You'll need a day to sort through the amounts that have been abandoned...

I used to have a Macpac but my camping days are over so I gave it away. There was a thread here a year or three back which extolled the virtues of tents from The Warehouse. I found that a bit surprising because to me Warehouse products involving long zips were worthy of suspicion.
If the people who posted to that thread are still around they should now have a very good idea of the quality of their tents.

As with anything, you get what you pay for.
You want light, well made, long lasting and weatherproof - you can expect to have pay.
That being said the NZ brands that used to be the best in the world (Macpac in particular) have recently slipped both in terms of design, materials and construction. They are now no better than the second tier brands (Kathmandu for example).
As well as "buyer-club" discounts - typically 10-20% - all the local brands run regular sales - Kathmandu has at least four each year - where their gear is discounted by up to 50%. There is no need to pay full retail if you can wait a while.
The Warehouse stuff is not too bad - it might not survive a full-on winter storm - but is perfectly adequate for most uses.
I would be careful with second hand gear from TardMe and the like - NZ's high UV kills tent fabrics - and anything that has seen a lot of use is probably farked. Inspecting in person is fine but buying unseen is not always a good idea.
I like Swoop's idea for abandoned gear. My top tip is to make sure you seam seal any new tent and fly before use.
