Hey guys, hoping someone can give me a little info on this, so thanks for any help in advance.

I've just moved back to NZ so a little unsure about rules etc.

I'm looking at buying a '81 Yamaha 750 to rebuild into a scrambler. Ive found one that's been sitting in someones shed for around 10 years which i'm looking at buying.

I'm just unsure about the registration process. The bike has been de-regoed by VTNZ because the current owner let the registration lapse. from what I gather all I need to do is get it to a standard that will pass a VIN check and it will be re-registered and ready to go which costs about $450 then I need to pay a rego of around $500.

Can someone tell me if this is correct? I plan to buy the bike and spend a yearish rebuilding it before I do any of the above, but I just want to make sure I don't spend a whole lot of time working on it and find out i've got to back pay 5 years of registration or something like that.

Thanks!

Sounds about right to me. uI'd have a chat to the people you'd be taking it to for the new Vin inspection and see what they will be looking for - brak lines. wheel bearings etc.

What model Yammy 750?

I'm in the process right now with a '77 Honda that has no registration history at all.

Have to fill out 2 forms, first is a motorcycle brake declaration. This involves measuring runout, ovality and pad/lining thickness compared with factory specs as well as any part numbers of new brake components.

Second is a Statutory Declaration, which basically says who you are, who you bought the bike from and that you are the legal owner. This needs to be signed by a JP.

Hand this in to VTNZ, they book a WOF appointment, done deal.
