Hi folks,

I bought a pair of the Waterproof Chief Winter Leather Gloves and they always stink of smelly feet.
Ive tried freezing them to kill any bacteria that would cause the smell but it made no difference.

Any ideas?

Have no ideas on how your gloves stink of feet! :weird:

But try putting baking power inside them, then put them in a plastic bag and leave for a couple days for baking soda to work its magic.
After a couple of days turn gloves inside out, wash/rinse out the baking soda and put them somewhere warm to dry.

Freezing don't kill bacteria. You have to boil them in hot water for good 10 minutes.

Actually I have no idea either. I tried hand washing, soap, washing machine etc... made it even worse. So I just bought a new pair.

+1
Vodka mixed with tea-tree oil. It's what they use in the movie biz to clean and freshen costumes.

To a large bowl, add one bottle of Vodka, one bottle of cheap Whiskey, 50 mls of Rum, 1 ltr of pineapple juice and ice. Soak gloves for two hours, if they still smell after two hours, drink the remaining concoction and get on TM and you'll end up buying 87 pairs at the buy now price.

You are left with something that can be sucked on, in public.* or a pleasant way to get pissed without the donut-munchers getting suspicious!

* Just letting people's imaginations run freely here...

Silk glove liners. Buy several and rotate them, much easier washing them than the gloves. Also easier to get your hands in and out when the gloves are wet, you don't pull the lining out etc.

Baking soda is very harsh on your skin and people may have a reaction to it - you can use baking soda to clean toilets or ovens, it's that strong. As it was mentioned before, vodka is the way to go (or my suggestion of Vodka and Tea Tree oil) - it's a great & effective disinfectant. You can also use it to freshen your smelly boots

i think you may be getting confused with washing soda which is bleach, baking soda is what is used in a lot of products from quickeze through to toothpaste and i have never heard of anyone having a reaction to baking soda,(thats not to say it doesn't happen). oh please do not use washing soda in ya baking but it will leave ya gloves smelling like a swimming pool and leave ya hands very very clean especially if it happens to rain whilst you are wearing them

Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) has a PH of around 9, human skin is about 5.5. Baking soda residue left in the gloves may cause some skin irritation, especially if it's used regularly and your hands would be in the gloves for a while. It's not the worst thing in the world to clean gloves with, but there are gentler options.

Meh, just use cheap vodka. And don't fret, they're still making alcohol despite the negative consequences of excessive consumption...

Rubbing alcohol works just as well at a fraction the cost... Just don't drink it...

I don't use alcohol because I found it shrinks the leather but not the lining. A big deal when you have big hands.
But then I have also found using them regularly reduces the odour.

The one and only time I had to clean a set of gloves for odour reasons I had previously washed in laundry detergent... Not knowing any better. No sport wash back then and no internet. To the library.
Recommendation from librarian was to either buy silicate free soap (now known as sport wash) or to rinse with white vinegar.
Some sodium bicarbonate in a plastic bag inside another plastic bag with your gloves into a warm dry space over night.

Magic.

Someone gave me the baking soda idea a couple of weeks back. It actually worked okish.

But then there's this gritty white powder at the tips of your fingers. Gloves of course are too armoured to turn inside out.

I got a piece of garden hose to feed in each finger separately and vacuumed using some rag to seal the hose to the pipe. Did work a bit, but not enough. Contemplating next move. Found some other winter gloves but these ones were better.

Put them in the washing machine with Canesten or Dettol laundry "hygiene" rinse. That stuff contains benzalkonium chloride, kills all the stinky microbes.
