View Full Version : Group riding - the DVD...

bugjuice
4th October 2005, 19:14
k, so I have a DVD of tips n tricks for riding in groups. It's pretty much a must watch for every newbie who has no experience in riding in group formation. It covers everything you need to know when group riding (once you're on the road to ride, it's a different story) including signals, waiting at junctions, break downs, prep work, organising the ride etc etc..

It's not something you want to keep and watch over and over (hardly a box office smash hit), but it's valuable knowledge to know. Even if you've ridden for years, but no group riding.. Hopefully make it all a safer time for the rest of us.

Anyway, the deal is - whoever wants this DVD, PM me. First come, first serve. Post here to say you received and that you have it. Watch it. Then post here that you are ready to pass it on. The next person PMs you. You mail it to them, and so forth. Then more KBers will get to see it, and we can all share. Just the cost of a couple of bucks to send it on to the next. Please look after the DVD, get local KBers round to see it too, and just keep passing it on.
May be a mod even make this a sticky thread, to keep it active?

So, who's first up? I'll drop it local, or mail it NZ wide. Just pm and then say you've got it here

Is it copyrighted? I can burn off a few copies if you like, get one for each of the main centers?

Or could convert to Divx if someone wants to put up the space to host it?

I know some of the talent that helped make this particular product. There's some nice camera work. And some useful learning!

And all material is copyright, whether or not it is directly stated on the material in question. Other people's work should be treated with respect.

bugjuice

yeah, gonna have to go with Hitcher on this WRT, sorry..
It's good that we have it in our little circle, but I still feel bad that we're passing a copy round. Either way, SteveD is picking it up tonight, and then once he's watched it, he can pass it on

Hey, dont appologise! That was why I was asking if it was protected by copyright, to assertain the legality/morality of copying it.

Would it a good thing for a DVD night round at someones house over a couple of beers and some pizza? Get a bit of a debate going on over it?

bugjuice

Get a bit of a debate going on over it?
that would be a sad night, and the lowest point of the week..
it's factual, it says what it says (which is pretty much spot on), and that's it. But, we can come round with pizza and beers and watch your porn collection.

now, back to passing it round (the ride safe DVD that is..)

Ok, maybe debate wasnt the right word to use there, perhaps "conversation" would have been better . . .

An interesting line of logic. ACC isn't in this to get rich but I'm sure they'd like to recover their costs. Similarly other recording artists probably have ambitions a bit more far reaching than starving to death in an icy, rat-infested garret while the barbarian hordes rip and burn their CDs to avoid (heaven forbid) having to buy them. What you are proposing is pure and simple theft. Shame.

ermm. Guess I am quick to assume that ACC sells the DVD's instead of giving them away?

And that the people who had a hand in making the DVD gets paid per copy and not a lumpsum contract?

And the worse of all.. ACC is now in the business of making DVD for sale to make a profit. All using tax payer money!

Yep - I would be interested borrowing a copy of this.

I have been in touch with a guy from ACC who replied and said this is going to be distributed free from their site soon, so just confirming, the are not trying to make a cent out of it - they just want people to see it.

I would like to see it sooner rather than later.

Please PM me if you have a copy you are finished with.

I've got the guy's email address at home and I am happy to contact him on Monday to get (in black and white):

1. Exactly when it is going to be available from their website and

2. What methods of informal distribution they are happy with in the meantime.

That way we can be sure we don't breach any rights they want to maintain over mass distribution - e.g. IF someone were to go the next step and host a DIVX copy on the web say, that might not be cool with them. (Then again, it might).

I am happy to check and report back.

If someone wants to say "STFU newbie and crawl back in your hole" now is your big chance. :)

cool. cheers for that... will be great. Let me know how you go... I might even host a DivX on my server... if they would allow. (would limit it to NZ's IP range thou)

My thinking is that as follows

1.) you are not dealing with Hollywood here. ACC didn't make the DVD to make money. And in fact... ACC is not for profit right?
2.) it is interesting to see how Hollywood's acts have affected the spread of public safety information and education material when its produced by a government org for the good of the people :)

Hi All,

This is what I got back from Peter Denton from the ACC yesterday which clarifies the copyright situation:

The DVDs are likely to be made available either later this week or early next week.

We have made a limit of one copy of the DVD per order. (This was really just to prevent someone from ordering a heap and selling them off!) People are welcome to order copies on behalf of others and there are heaps of copies so it is probably not necessary to copy the DVD if you can obtain an original. However there is no restriction on copying the DVD if people want to. The ultimate intention of ACC and the people who put the DVD together is to get the information out to as many motorcyclists as posible to help to prevent injuries.

If a person wishes to create a digital copy and host it for others to download, that's fine. However it would be appreciated if an acknoledgement is made of where it came from.

Regards
Pete Denton
Looks like they will be easy to get hold of quite soon (from http://www.rideforever.co.nz ).

Thanks heavenly.talker for forwarding me a copy! I got it yesterday.

I'd take it ... but the maximum upload of UBS now days is only 128kb ... that means you can only send it at 10KB/s = 17 hour download. + I'm pretty sure I'm one of the only people with unlimited broadband bandwidth so people may get capped ... is there any chance I can just ride around and pick the DVD up, so I can burn it to the Harddrive and then return it ... I'll only be like an hour?

It is handy to have your own copy... so that if you meet a new rider you can then show it to them...... so that they will learn from it...

Apparently putting your helmet on your mirror also transfers the dead insects from your mirror to the inside of your helmet. ewww.

Group Riding, the DVD as requested in another thread as an .avi
It's a 17minute DVD and compressed down into a 28Mb DivX video here (http://homepages.woosh.co.nz/dsoutham/motorcycle_page/) (c/o Disco Dans high speed host)

The standard reminder: you need the divX codec installed on your PC to see the picture (or a player such as VLC) and although the normal picture size is small you should be able to zoom the playback to full screen and get a good result.

My old/slow link.... 28Mb DivX video here (http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/9/8/208927/28mbGroupRidingDivX.avi).
