Motorcyclists could be saved by airbags
17 September 2005
AFTER 15 years of research, Honda has announced it will introduce the first airbag system for motorbikes next year.
Four crash sensors mounted on the front fork of the bike detect the deceleration caused by a collision. This alerts an electronic control unit, which triggers an airbag in front of the rider to inflate. The bag inflates just 60 milliseconds after the moment of impact.
The airbag absorbs some of the forward energy of the rider and reduces the speed at which they are thrown from the bike. Honda says the system can significantly reduce fatalities and the severity of injuries in head-on collisions. It does not protect against collisions from the side or rear.
The airbag system will make its first appearance on Honda's Gold Wing touring bikes in the US in early 2006, and in Europe later in the year.

I'm not fully convinced that airbags are that safe... but good on Honda for making the effort...

When I first saw this thread I thought you were a wife beater :p
Personally Im none too keen on airbags on bikes. Im not too keen on airbags fullstop. The idea of me flying forward at 100kph and something rushing towards me at 300kph just doesn't sound apealling. I know Im proberbly wrong, but employing the typical male brain to the physics involved means instead of me still flying forward I will end up flying backwards onto the road in preperation for the next vehicle to run over me.
Or what happens if you are knee down and half off the bike when it goes off. You will end up like a spinning top making bling noises everytime you connect with something.
Airbags........ nah, not for me.

Honda seems to be getting their divisions confused. Bikes aren't cars, the only way to be safe is to avoid hitting things.

I feel as though ive posted this before but wouldn't they just act like ejector seats?
Send you flying in the opposite direction :doctor: i can't really see how they would be effective i mean it's not like if we crash we hit our head on the steering wheel or dashboard (except for goldwings) maybe if they started installing them on the outside of cages :done:

If you have a seat-belt (Gold-Wing?) then they would work fine :2thumbsup
I think external airbags have already been looked at for pedestrian safety. But who wants to pay for someone elses safety when buying a car?

I thought BMW or dianese made helmets and jackets that effectively had airbags around the neck that would go off in event of a crash (not sure how) and protect the neck and cushion the impact. I think the firing mechcanism was the achilles heel though.

But then you weight a lot more than the airbag which is coming at you at high speed...so if you look at the momentum of each body (you, airbag) you're probably not gonna be thrown back, but rather be swallowed up by it like on those crash test dummy videos you see about the place.

I want to see lots of demostration videos on this invention.

any airbag won't accelerate a body in any direction,it wil just act as a cushion

So it had a wire to the boot?
Spidi make an airbag jacket

the spidi jacket looks like a good idea. -it attaches to the bike with a teather -like a racers kill switch. if ya come off and unplug the teather a gas cylinder instantly inflates the jacket so you're like the michellen man.
I have mental images of skinny ol white trash blowing up mid corner and bouncing down the road like a rubber ball

That'll be a great party trick, put your airbag suits on, have a big group hug. Then trigger them.

Must be expensive if you forget that its attached though if you are at a gas stop.

First question Sniper what the fuck are you dong on the site at 6:20 did you wet the bed!
Did spidi or one of those not bring out a jacket/pants tjing that inflates as soon as you are flung from the bike (Cord attached to the handle bars or something). The threory was that it inflates around the neck area so that if you fall your neck would be protected therefore less neck injuries. I will have a look sometime but I think it was spidi. Also you got little refil air things with it as well.

that'll be the aforementioned achilles heel I was talking about. Or how about stopping to pick up the paper, hopping off the bike, not disconecting --- next thing you know your wedged in the shop window, like the michelin man frightening small children

Damn my overly graphic imagination! I'm sitting at my desk pissing myself laughing at the mental images that evokes.
The possibilities are endless and amusing - endlessly amusing if your sense of humour is as nasty as mine...

Isn't is obvious??
When they introduce airbags on sportsbikes, you're on the tank, suddenly something happens. You pull the brakes on very hard, bike thinks you're crashing and the airbag triggers. Since you're on the tank, wham! you get launched off the bike, away to safety.
No danger of course, you also have the airbag jacket, and the airbag triggering and throwing you away also triggers the jacket.
Afterall, what good are the cords if you have a low side, maybe you have hit the ground before the cord triggers.
This combo is much better. :niceone: Anyone have a vid of it in a corner??
as per Wolf's imagination, I am the same

I'm yet to be convinced that airbags on bikes can save lives. I suspect this is just another gimmick added to enhance the 'flavour' of the bike over Honda's competitors and con the unwary newbie. Now 'saddle straps' there's a life saver. :stupid:

For some strange reason, I have visions of airbags mounted on each side of the bike, useful for when you get the bike over that fraction too far, perfect for saving the fairings from damage...altho bouncing from side to side as you head down the road could be an experience and a half :slap:

Not sure about the pink colour - makes it look a bit like a giant mammary.
Still haven't found any videos. I want to see how it works in a crash situation.

I don't like this idea cause what happens if you, say, hit a bump at 100kph and instead of either holding on or falling off you might either get pushed off or instead of sliding down the road get thrown 10 feet into the air + slide distance... no thanks

Hit a bump and WTF, I can't see a fucking thing because there's a huge pink arse-shaped bag in my face.
