View Full Version : Bimota YB7

The word classic is used far too often. The Bimota YB7 however, truly deserves the label. Like all Bimotas; it was built to be the best in its class in terms of quality and specifications.
Listed as a 1992 model, this is one of the very last of only 321 bikes known to have been built. There are no signs of damage anywhere and the paint is in superb condition. Some storage and sea freight corrosion on the alloy and steel components is present but can be polished out with a little effort making for an almost new look.
The Bimota YB7 uses Yamahas FZR400 motor and with some mods by Bimota, made 68HP on their dyno at 13,000rpm. Factor in the sub 160kg dry weight, top quality components and you have a fast little bike that handles superbly and stops on a dime. Top speed is an outstanding 217kph but that power and weight (possibly 175kg fueled up wet), suggest that this should be able to be registered as a LAMS bike. This then has to be the best used LAMS option available in NZ!
The following article and specs written when the bike was new by Alan Cathcart, tell you the story (scroll down past the specs). http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/bimota/bimota_yb7%2088
.htm
On the international market; these little classics can fetch 30% more than the asking price: http://www.raidermoto.com/1988-bimota-yb7/
We would recommend a filter and oil change as we don’t know how long the bike has been sitting.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1194719497
Note: We have about a dozen bikes for sale and are working through themall one at a time getting them set up for use. Prices listed are as is butnegotiable.
Once we have completed a bike; it will be repriced based on its cost tous and its market value. All bikes were bought as running bikes with nosignificant issues.
Compliance costs are about $190 plus registration. We can do this foryou if you want to use the bike on the road. Obviously there’s no need if youbuy one as a track day bike.

I think the comment about lams shouldn't be in your advert.
Its not on the LAMS list and never will be. Its got a power to weight ratio way to high and stating it should be is attracting buyers that cant ride it.

Of course its not on the list: only 321 were ever made and that was 25 years ago so nobody has ever asked the question.
It is rated at less power and about the same weight as Yamahas MT07.
As noted, if anyone wants us to check with our inspector; we will ask him if it meets LAMS requirements.

Calculates 203 kw/t including 90kg rider.
Limit is 150 kw/t
Likely a collector rather than learner buy it anyway I guess.

The FZ400 on which this bike is based, is on the LAMS list.
There are plenty of others with way higher power to weight ratios like the 60HP/120kg Aprilia SXV450, Honda CRF450X, Honda XR650R, Husaberg FE570 and lots more.
Rated at 65HP with a kerb weight of around 175kg; why wouldn't it meet the spec again compared to that Aprilia etc?
Never, mind, if you don't know Bimota and don't understand their philosophy, you're not my target audince anyway. I'll let the certifier guy make the decision if the question is asked

It doesnt matter whether it "meets the requirements" - If it is not on the fucking list it is noncompliant and fucking learners can't ride it. Your advert is misleading and deceptive. You are in trade. You have committed a breach of the Fair Trading Act (specifically s9). Take that comment out.

WRONG! The authorities have an application form for bikes that have never been considered before. You know, like bikes that were only ever built in limited numbers.

BTW: I'm just listing many for a friend. I'm not in trade nor is he (he's a sparky, I sell service on heavy machinery). We're selling some of our bikes. If I was breaching the act, I'd have said it DID meet LAMS. I didn't: I said it may meet it and I'd apply if someone asked.

The mods will kill them off soon.

Red Baron have a Yamaha R1 Z for sale and they're advertizing is as a LAMS bike (45HP/133k could be considered a TZR derivative). I'm only saying I'll ask if it's important to them.

actually, it's more than just power and weight and there's no general rule; just the rules. If 59HP is the max, there's at least half a dozen bikes on the list t a glance, that exceed that so called limit. Hell, I even posted some!
Actually ... The LAM's system is based on a power to weight ratio. Thus ... the more horsepower the bike has ... the heavier it needs to be. As long as it is under 660 cc and it's weight in production form meets the power to weight formula (150 Kilowatts per tonne) it can be approved as a LAM's motorcycle.
The Bimota YB7 is listed as developing 47.5 Kilowatts. You list the bike at 160 kg (plus 90 kg for rider and safety gear as required in LAM's legislation)
The formula ... The power-to-weight ratio calculation involves the power output (kilowatts)being divided by the tare weight of the motorcycle plus 90 kg (for rider and safety gear). The result is then multiplied by 1000 (to convert to kW per tonne).
Thus the end figure is 194 Kilowatts. 44 Kilowatts over .... I doubt ANY inspector will overlook that number.

It' ALL about the power to weight ratio. And the rules are remove any ambiguity that may be implied in legislation. Or believed by some people.
