Anyone know if there is a formula or charts or ?? to work out tooth belt (Gilmer belt) sizing? I'm looking at converting a Trojan (oldie but fairly goodie)radial arm saw that originally uses triple A series vee belts to a tooth belt drive. The shafts are 100mm apart and the pulley cant be any larger than 55mm diameter and up to 50mm wide.
Its probably a lot of work for not much gain but the existing belts require constant attention and are a real shit to replace.
Thanks.

Go and see a belt supply specialist. In ChCh there are two I could use for that sort of job and i'm sure there are similar in Wellington.
Mr Ocean may be able to point you at a suitable specialist.
I wouldn't have thought a conversion to toothed belt would solve your problems as the shafts are still too close together....

Thanks. I searched some more and found this http://www.bbman.com/belt-length-calculator/ which I think will answer the questions.

Yes there is many calculators but use the word timing belt.

A few will even tell you if your pulleys are to small ie less than 1/2 in tooth contact etc

Thanks. I tried the bbman.com one and it looks like its do-able, they can supply the two pulleys and belt for less than $US100. I'm guessing a 2" wide belt should be adequate for a 1hp motor driving a 12" blade.

A 32mm wide AT10 willl handle 100HP. On a motorbike primary drive. so yes it should be OK.

In my view, the small size of the drive wheels will limit the number of teeth engaging. The short distance center to center means a short belt and rapid wear.
Don't throw the vee belt pulleys away...

Depending of course on belt speed. But at least with a toothed belt he can silicon the living shit out of the belt, to promote longer life.

The bbman.com calculator gives me two 36 tooth 57.3mm diameter pulleys 102.5mm apart with 18 teeth in mesh using a HDT5 belt. For $US100 its probably worth a punt. Motor speed is 2850 rpm. I couldn't find anything to say if that was allowable or not.
Pretty neat calculator though.
