Bet there's some slips inland though - been quite a bit of rain in there.

It won't be the only one. Access inland will be hard. Wonder what the Arthurs Pass and Lewis pass are like.
I see the initial 6.6 has been upgraded and it looks as though Wellington got a good shake up. Ferry terminal damage is serious though.

We flew in from Melbourne last night at midnight and had to fly around a bit while they checked out the Aucks runway. All good, so landed and felt piss all. Listened to talk back radio (yeah I'm an old bugger) on the way home to the Tron and there was a load of Ducklanders ringing in and talking/complaining about the shake. FFS. The show host was cutting them a bit short so he could hear from the real affected people. We got told on the plane it was a 7.2 and the radio was saying 6.6. There were plenty of people that rang in to say that MUST be wrong and by the time we got home they'd uprated it to 7.5. Scary shit for those at or close to the epi-centre. Hope your nerves have settled a bit Grumph...get back in that shed ;)

We were all about to book ferry tickets for our annual South Island ride in 2 weeks time. One of us heard the West Coast road near Punakaiki is also closed due to a slip. Can't find mention of it on Stuff. Anyone heard aboiut the West Coast?
Anyways we've decided it would be rude to go on a fun ride when the locals are suffering. Not that we would actually be able to get south beyond Picton at this stage. Kaikoura slips may take months to clear. Remember how many months the Manawatu Gorge was out a few years back from just one big slip.

I mentioned the RO/RO terminal at Lyttelton earlier. saw a mention of coastal shipping in a news conference too.
Doubt if there's a ship in NZ waters at present free to do it - and doubt if the interisland ferries would want to.
Maybe the one which normally carries mainly rail ?
A ship or ships would have to be sourced and leased - at least a month before anything would be running.
If madness' link was to Pacifica's RO/RO operation, it'll have been fully booked up for months as from yesterday...and only two ships I think anyway.
Bet they're ringing round worldwide for another.

It's more to do with the cost of land and storage. I started a whole another thread about this awhile back. Basically the cost per km of road/rail/coastal shipping is very similar in NZ.
With rail and coastal shipping the freight needs to be devanned/double handled/offloaded before delivery, this means more staff, time and cost. And the cost is only going up every day with osh compliance and other factors.
Without trucks many of our roads would still deteriotate due to construction, eg pumice base around taupo area gets munted everytime it rains hard. There would still be a lot of work required but no one to pay for it....
The greenies say we don't pay our fair share anyway so it seems a false economy to have an alledged conspiracy where a govt takes in 'donations' more than the cost of looking after the donor......

If you've got a few million cubic metres of quality soil.basefill/whatever that might be of use somewwhere else makes sense to take it somewhere it might get used. Even if you just pushed it into the sea it wouldnt be a simple task. You'd still need a lot of extra heavy mobile plant, skilled operators and a workable plan. Hows that racist? The racists are the ones that selected a certain race to rescue & left the rest, That's racist, not the guy that's pointing it out.
But then theyre not white, so how could they possibly be racist?

Funnily enough "the governments" are "responsible" for their "citizens". the same shit will/has/does happen all over the world.
tsunami in bali? (or wherever the fuck it was that whatever the fuck it was that happened) NZ consul deals with -dun-dun-dun- NZ citizens; earthquake in japan, america evacuates -dun-dun-dun- american citizens.

Anyway, as a consequence of the ferries not moving freight, the depots in wellies and picton choke up with all the freight that still goes as far as it can. Then when the flow starts to move again it is the stuff that was at the depot first that ends up being the last to ship out. Lots of angry phone calls ensue etc

The old Rapaki floating crane which the Lyttelton harbour Board sold North - not sure whether she's in Wgtn or Auckland - was used post WW2 in the islands to recover a lot of stuff. Shallow draft too. Probably have to dig an approach channel and the whole thing would be weather dependant with no real shelter on that coast.
Could be done with what we have here in NZ. If they change the route of the rail line it might be the only way to recover the loco and rolling stock...

The most pleasing aspect which follows such a traumatic and horrific event like this and the Christchurch earthquake, is the generosity shown from Kiwi's all over NZ to those directly affected. It doesn't matter who you are/where you come from/what you have/what you don't have, in a situation like this - a large percentage of the country helps those in need however they can - just like as Pike River and Christchurch.
There was a Motorcycle fund raiser in 2011 for CH-CH and there was also one for Pike river months earlier from some South Island bikers.
Those discussing racial bullshit on this thread? Fuckwits - get over yourselves - and red repping each other? laughable to the extreme, you people are not worth a pinch of shit.

Liked your video, Crasher, found myself humming, "Day after day, de whole place slipping away . . . "
I understand little shakes are a part of ordinary life for y'all. Same thing is true in Anchorage, Alaska, where my family lived when I was a little guy, and you might like this yarn that came out of the 9.2-rated Good Friday earthquake in 1964.
As the story goes, on that day a tourist up from the Lower 48 was visiting a friend in Anchorage when the earth began to tremble. "No sweat," her friend reassured her, "these things happen all the time here." But very quickly the shaking builds to where they are thrown to the ground, and great fissures open around them. (The main street of the city dropped twelve feet, the control tower at the airport collapsed, eighty houses in an upscale development slid off into Cook Inlet).
When the quake finally subsides, the visitor and her friend slowly and warily get to their feet. The visitor, still shaking with fear, finally gets her voice back and with considerable anger blurts out, "I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU PEOPLE CAN STAND HAVING THIS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME!!!"

I think that by next week you'll find that the government will be ready to repair the road...
Why? Kaikoura is a major tourist attraction and the road or rail there is part of the attraction and that means money coming in to the economy. What is to be seen that is as spectacular as whales and seals if you go over the Lewis Pass?
Also, if the road is not repaired what will be done about the rail line? Cut it off at Christchurch? Doubt it... Would mean building new infrastructure at Lyttelton for rail and then extending the Interislander service to Lyttelton as well, that's big money... Or you just abandon rail in the South Island altogether...

another route would take years and years and is just a joke, look at transmission gully, twenty odd kms and it's taking six years, the majority of the existing rail link is ok and will certainlly need a good check, the rest they'll need to roll their sleeves up for but just get on with it, once the aftershocks die down.

I heard the transport lobby is not losing money as they are putting up the cost of SI freight about 20% to compensate for the longer journey.
Even a 20% surcharge won't fully cover the extra costs of more wages for longer journey and extra diesel andctyre wear. Also with extra time it means lost potential freight journeys. Some trucks are doubleshifted and if it's late even once there's costs involved

Got to be the inland Kaikoura road to "relieve" Kaikoura first. Then from the looks of it, maintain the alternative route through the Lewis which is already suffering as it wasn't built for the loads.
God only knows what comes after that. Coastal shipping ?
Agree about the Inland Rd to Kaikoura - provide access for the town and allow for rebuilding/repairing. Also allow for the tourist activities to start again as soon as other infrastructure is up and running. Yes, you'll have to drive in and out on the same road but if you want to go dolphin watching then you'd do that.
Now for an outsider's point-of-view: A couple of nights ago the news showed contractors working on it from either end - a couple of father/son teams - and they seemed to now what they were doing - getting the road passable for heavy vehicles and four-wheel drive vehicles. Then along comes civil defence and the road is closed because of possible slips... so why aren't they getting on with dealing with the possible slips? I'm sure the contractors have experience to deal with slips that keep moving as you clear them and while the aftershocks continue. I don't imagine the contractors are going to put themselves at risk.
The Lewis Pass route seems to be a temporary solution - how often is that road closed in winter?
Get the road from Cheviot to Oaro open and usable - can be properly repaired over time but in the meanwhile is usable by those who live along that road. Same for the road south to Clarence.
As I said, an outsider's point-of-view... but I do wonder how much help government earthquake recovery and civil defence are? Or are they a hindrance to people getting their lives back in order and on with doing their things?
I do think that the people of Canterbury have the patience of Job...

Geo engineers know their stuff pretty well these days, if it's not safe it's not safe....
I've been at a major slip on Taupo Rd minutes after it happened. Standing there you can hear the hill side creaking and crumbling even tho it looks like all that's falling has fallen. At a later date there has been substantial slips in same place. It don't take much dirt to be dead or buried alive....

Yeah inland road makes sense, hopefully someone in govt has foresight to blast the hell out of the tips of those hills on coastal road and build a tourist and truck friendly double lane super expressway along the coast.
Rail needs level ground so they will have to open up and fix the rail line anyway, so it makes sense to spend money on road that provides maitainsnce access to rail.

Coastal shipping yep.
And, realistically, that's the only viable option in the short term and vessels and shipping company's are already working on moving freight . The show has to go on .
The SH1 main trunk road won't be open for a while and rail, even longer. I'm wondering how this will effect the business operations of Kiwi-rail and their staff in the South Island seeing as how the mainline has been effectively cut-off, hmm.
Best place to plan your holiday this Christmas ? I'd say Kaikoura, should be accommodation available and they need all the help they can get ...

There have been significant improvements to the coast road in recent years anyway. I drove to Wgtn in the early am a few weeks back after not having been on the road for several years. I was impressed that from the Waimak bridge to Picton was 4 hours - 1/2 hr quicker than it used to be.
All that's been lacking was the budget to do more straightening. Might be there this time.

Well, if you seen the news in the last week, you may've seen the parts of Courtenay Place here in Wellington are no go zones. My apartment happens to be one of those. Not because our building is unsafe...but because the car park belonging to Readings Picture Theatures is in *Imminent danger of collapse*. So now, Wellington City Council, have deemed it safe to walk withing 20 feet of said car parking building, yet won't let us back into our building to collect any personal belongings. So...I'm rather fucked off.

Presumably your building is one of those next door to the carpark. Are you saying that the weaknesses should have been picked up after the last round of quakes ? We've seen here that subsidence takes time - and will go unnoticed till the next shake.

Fully appreciate that mate. But our apartment is 100% ok after the shake. It's the cunting car park building that's the problem. Happened in Christchurch too, the grand chancellor hotel had entire blocks cordoned off because it got a lean on after the feb quake, apparently it was fine after september....
Someone I work with had a house in sumner that was undamaged, but ended up behind the container wall that was put up due to the rock fall risk. They weren't allowed back in to get stuff from the house, house was undamaged so no insurance and it was their problem to pay for somewhere else to live, when they were finally allowed back they found that the containers hadn't stopped other people getting in and cleaning the place out.

There's a point which is not being reported yet but which should concern people very much...In the last year or so, the excess for EQC claims has gone from 1% - which we paid post the ChCh quakes and repairs - to a flat $5000.
So, all the smallish damage will almost cetainly be at owners expense.
We were watching the red stickering of houses in Kaikoura on TV and wondering about them too - How many have adequate insurance now.
All will have had their premiums rise post ChCh but given it's a low income area and house values have traditionlly been low too, how many will have enough insurance for a full rebuild ? I'd pick a rebuild there will cost more than a similar one out on the plains.

I dont think the $5000 excess applies to the actual house but driveways, paths, fences etc. Looks like many Kaikoura driveways have come off a lot worse than ChCh ones though and for those unable to pay the excess they will just replace with a shingle drive.
To the best of my knowledge it applies to all EQC claims - incl any house claims. The affordable 1% excess is gone.
The small stuff cost so much in ChCh that this is the govt's way of cutting the costs to EQC.

Just checked my current AMI policy and the excess is $400 but for anything not covered by the Earthquake Commission its $5000 eg driveways fences etc. What is worse than the $5000 excess though is the fact all policies are no longer full replacement but fixed price and if you have got that wrong you may not be able to afford a rebuild. I am actually insured myself for less than the cost of a full rebuild but if the worst happened I would get a nice mobile home or caravan with the money which would be more robust to shaking than a permanent material place.
Correct, pretty much all the insurance companies cranked the excess for non-eqc covered items to $5k, after they ended up replacing entire driveways that were 40 years old because they had 1 new crack in them beside the 100 existing ones.
EQC have also changed their excess I think, http://www.eqc.govt.nz/get-help-now/what-youre-covered-for
Excess
An excess is the amount you have to contribute towards a claim that is accepted by EQC. The amount of the excess is deducted from the amount of your claim.
Your dwelling, or your dwelling and personal property If your claim is for $20,000 or less, EQC will deduct an excess of $200 and pay the rest. If your claim is for more than $20,000, EQC will pay 99% of it, deducting an excess of 1%.

Key's already said repair is the favoured option. You could call the coast road TINA...because basically it was the only feasible route to use.
Sure we know what the topography of the ranges is better now with satellite imaging but it's still the only route feasible for rail.

They built the coastal route where it is because it was the cheapest option at the time.
It seems extremely unlikely that the cost of building a complete new highway through significantly more wrinkly countryside would be cheaper or quicker than repairing a couple of percent of the damaged existing one.
I'm not sure if the Molesworth option is any less prone to natural disaster anyway, is it? I mean it's probably wrinkly for a good reason....

The same situation existed in Christchurch, where the only option was to insure with the same company as the previous owners, and it involved lots of paperwork. Most houses had been inspected by EQC so once you managed to obtain the paperwork you could send it on, there was usually a building inspection required as well, if it didn't have EQC paperwork or it was uninsured then it just got too painful.

It should be headline news, not buried in the business section. I can't be bothered with Stuff much these days.
Also the option to transfer policies is not available this time. It's a hard and fast embargo with no option available.
I'd also like to point out that the house we're buying is nowhere near the epicentre in Kaikoura. It's ridiculous cowardice on the part of Insurance companies and it's supported by Government to protect EQC from having to payout on earthquake damaged homes where the title was in transit.

The deal is actually a lie. The Real Estate agent rang up ranting at my wife this morning so our lawyer went to bat for us and spoke to four insurance companies who all said the same thing that we'd been reporting to the Real Estate agent. The Real Estate agent then claimed that she'd sold a place a week ago and they had no trouble getting insurance, but when pushed that turned out to be the Thursday before the earthquake.
They were going to lift the embargo where we're buying this Friday, but last night's 5.7 in Culverden put paid to that.

Given recent local history why would you want to live in that area? This not being able to get insurance looks like a good way to can the deal and try somewhere else less likely to fall into the ocean.
You've made an invalid assumption. We are buying nowhere near an ocean.

Well you say that. You might be immortal. S'not like you haven't tested the theory.

Looks like the Asteron building may be a bit of an issue. Just had a call from a friend who works there that's just been evacuated. Cracks have been found but they're not sure how bad it is just yet. The missus works there too and they felt a massive jolt today so not sure if they're new cracks or something that a couple shaggin somewhere recently spotted.

South Canterbury to Masterton covers a fair bit of the country, and a lot of that nowhere near the sea.
I am dying too.
We managed to just get through escaping the red zone on the day before confirmation was due, in doing so saving us around $500 a week on loss of insurance settlement value vs the ever increasing market, after finally getting a response from an insurance company I hate after spending $1000 to meet their requirements and then hand delivering it to the bank to get finance approved.
I understand your frustration, I just hope you are not being coerced to move, because I know from personal experience that it is a cunty situation to be in.

Seriously though that is really the shits. Especially if the story about some cunts being allowed to go in to get fucking rugby crap is true.
It's 100% true. Old Steve Tew would've simply made a call to his bumchum Key...and in they go to get the silverware! I had a run in (well, a few actually) with a guy by the name of Phil Becker, of WCC, the tosser tries to tell me that they were let in, due to the level of risk being different to mine. They were only in danger of falling glass, I'm in danger of being squashed. Not sure which would be a better way to go. Being sliced in half by 20mm thick glass falling from 18 stories, or being squashed. Odd though, that when I asked to see the engineers report comparing the two...he couldn't and wouldn't. He's a full of shit wanker.

Wonder who I can bill for the damage from that?

Bloody hell, that was lucky.
Luckily we have no coercion as yet, however, we suspect it is coming soon. Wonder if the Real Estate agent will pay for a motel? :)

Fuck no. That's my favourite stretch of SH1 you are suggesting is destroyed.
Mike Hosking (instant expert on everything) made a plea last night for the coastal route to be replaced by a new inland route Marlbourough to Canterbury. Minister for Everything Steven Joyce was saying this morning that the proposed inland route would involve high altitudes and would consequently be closed too frequently due to snow.
An early indication that they are looking at repair rather than replace?
Yes its a nice ride but it will never be the same. Makes sense though while you've got the big gear there to go full monty and double lane as much of it as posssible, put in big tourist bus and truck friendly rest areas with viewing platforms. Then once the job is done they can put all the gear on boats and take it up to the disaster that is roading in Northland.
The far north is a goldmine of tourism and high value real estate waiting to be unlocked with decent infrstructure access and roading.
Putting my money on repair though, just to costly surveying, RMA, land aquisition, weather elements to put anew road anywhere else.
And the rail, the rail HAS to be repaired so makes sense to keep the road there for access.

Try reporting them under OSH, they have entered an unsafe workplace environment. Being escorted by SAR doesn't mean shit, in no way is that managed risk as the person who could rescue you will be buried with you.

And a CLEAN hi vis at that so you look like one of them. Often delivering at places in the truck theres no facilities for drivers, especially overseas.

You may be confusing Marsden with One Tree Point? Marsden Waterways did not explode as per developers predictions. The 'Marsden City' development is a massive fail. Ruakaka is still very much not like the other areas mentioned. Your story is inaccurate.

Doesn't need to be over developed, just some nice expensive hotels for rich foreign tourists to stay in. Then more easy reasonably paid jobs cooking/cleaning/feeding/transporting them.
And it would still be chur bro, but "Chur Bro cant believe another 'Merican just paid $1000 to go bareback horseriding with the whanau, or guided surfcasting, pig hunting, fishing trips etc....
You should see what a few piles of steaming shitty vine yards have done for HB....
Govt beauracracy will always be about, hell in your case you'd prob even get massive grants to help set up in business.
Our country would be third world without forestry jobs and the associated industries...
