Hi, I think I need a radar dectector....can't keep my mind on riding when my head is spinning 360 checking every thing at every moment.
Do any of you have one, and do they work and are there bike specific ones?
I have been looking at the escort passport max international. Sounds like what I need according to the sales pitch.....
any help appreciated as I have no clue what I'm looking at.
Cheers

This topic has been debated to death on KB. Only one bike specific radar detector, TPX 2, yes I've got one and it works just fine. Anything else is a car version and needs farkles to get it to work on bike, IMHO.

Here's an overview of what they will and won't do for you: http://geoffjames.blogspot.co.nz/2010/05/radar-detectors-worth-having.html . At best, they're an aid and if you don't keep up good situational awareness, you'll still get bitten.
I took the Escort and screamer off the Street Triple when I sold it a year ago and it's still sitting in the shed. Won't bother now to put it on the GSX-S.

Thanks,I don't read fast and it would take me ages to get this straight looking on the web. I get the idea so will make my choice.... I don't hoon about, only back on the bike after a long time.went out and passed a flicking camper doin 80 on a 100k straight just as a station wagon with camera in it was parked up. I only hit maybe 115 to get by and get inbut it got me thinking is all. I need my listens for work.
Do the camera cars catch a bike plate?

If it can see your plate, then yes they will.
Camera cars don't do demerit points so you'd get fined but you wouldn't lose your license.
Cops, though... Sportsbike sales aren't what they used to be. Cruiser and adventure bike sales are up. Make of that what you will.

I have been stopped only twice on the bike, ticketed just the one time... but got off that. I have however, been spotted by oncoming Cops and given the nod to slow down. In summary, personally I don't see the need for a radar detector when I have the Bro's to politely let me when I should peg it back a bit. Other than that, choose your moments... if you ride everywhere nuts out and 'can't keep your mind on your riding' then perhaps a little bit of self control needs to be worked on.

I like the nod. I feel it is respectful - they know if they do a U turn you may wick it up, and shit get crazy.
It's a 'throttle off' nod. And to be fair, with me at least, it works.

Yes they only shoot the back, but if the operator is not having a nap he will try and get your plate.

That said, I don't have a detector because if I doubled all the tickets I have had in 27 years across many licences it would still be less than one radar detector, mounts and gubbins for 2 bikes etc.
Total demerits for same period would have me worried to have all at once but I would still be riding.

I had two small speeding tickets in quick succession. The money was a minor annoyance, the demerit points were a different matter. I needed my licence for work, so I invested in a detector.
To the OP, Generally people who say you don't need a detector have never had one. The TPX bike specific radar is popular and can be used with bluetooth, but when discussing this recently I was told that if you are listening to the phone, or to the Missus talking, or whatever, that will over ride the radar warning. That's not ideal.
The detectors are not great at picking up camera cars. The camera car radar is weak and is pointing across the road rather than along the road toward you. Also they operate on the band that has your detector warning you of every gas station and supermarket etc. So I turned that band off and just rely on my eyes for camera cars.
I keep meaning to turn it on for cross country trips of several hours duration but can never remember.
I didn't understand your comment about the Police not needing a photo to prosecute a speeding ticket. They had the photo, all that was missing was a number plate. The operator wrote that down. That would be rare though, it is more likely the operator would be asleep.

I bought the TPX today. I would have rather saved the money for beer or something more enjoyable. But it seems our Police state enrichment officers are multiplying at a rate I can no longer afford to stop for a roadside chat with each and every one of them. If they all looked up their ancestry online would they all turn out to be descendants of Dick Turpin?
Well it seems they all want to stop me for a chat about this and that. Demerits are piling up. Who knew that our government apparently imposed a set of maximum speed limits for NZ roads. First I've every fucking heard of this stupid idea. That line doesn't get you off a ticket by the way, in case any of you try it as an excuse.
The handy thing with the TPX is how easy I can swap it to the car. I haven't sorted the bike mount yet, none in stock for a week or so.
QUESTION:
To those using the TPX do you find the Detector's internal speaker is enough to hear while riding. I'm hoping this and the flashy mounted light thingy will be enough. Can't be stuffed farting around with additional in-helmet speakers or lights. Did that years ago with the V1 and it damn near burns your retina to dust after a few alerts.

I've found that the in-helmet earpiece is necessary. Stock up on cheap batteries from Aliexpress for when you forget to turn it off, or the button gets bumped when the helmet is stored.
The internal speaker of the TPX is near useless at speeds above walking pace. The flash mounted thing is only good if you can get it right up into your field of vision - difficult on a naked bike given little or no screen and an upright position. Might be OK on sports or touring bikes where the top of the screen is closer to where you're looking most.

I would not be without the in-helmet speaker. The unit itself you would not hear at any speed above about 50k. Having said that, you don't always hear the in helmet earphone either, especially if you use ear plugs like I do. Which is why I also have the LED mounted up. Between the two of them you have a chance of being alerted in time.
Nothing can make up for a pair of alert eyes though. A detector is an aid, and is not infallible.

Thanks for the info Guys. After my V1 got nicked I felt a careful set of eyes was enough and that's worked for some years. But I've been caught out twice now by cops hiding amongst a line of oncoming cars, too hard to spot until too late.
I'll see how well the lights work first.

The lights don't work we well on my gixxer as they did on an SV. Mainly because it is harder to mount the light where it is in the line of sight on the gixxer. Careful placement, if possible, helps a lot.

I certainly owe my V1 money after many years ! Two weeks ago i zipped thru to Taupo from Wgton in the car. Ipicked the 4 camera vans I saw and although not as readable as the old frequency I got a signal.
But several HW Patrol were located easily. One on the desert road using instant on from over 3 kms .
Pulling out to pass on the open road when people are doing 80 kph (and doesn't that piss you off ?)and getting right up it, is peace of mind for me.
(I pass as quick as I can but saw many, many drivers hanging out passing, petrified of exceeding 100 kph, that is so bad !!)
I don't bother with it on the bike cos I'm not asleep usually. lol

Agreed about higher awareness on the bike was thinking of it being handy in those passing situations where you need some more pace to get out and in in a timely fashion and Mr. Plod may be around the bend ahead.

I've started riding with my Uniden LRD 950. It's a nice bit of comfort, catches those lazy cunts sitting around corners on speed transition areas. It's very effective, but I've had one speeding ticket from a shit head using instant on, so it's not fool proof. Still, it has saved me more than it cost me by a lot.
I researched pretty thoroughly for a set up that would allow me to receive the signal on my Sena unit, but couldn't find anything good. So I run a wire, and in fact have two sets of speakers in my helmet, ridiculously. Very reliable though.

A friend of mine in America has upgraded his Radar Detector and will post me his old one. TPX 2.0 or something to that effect. Quick question - are they the same over there as they are over here - same frequencies - or am I wasting my time? Or can I just use it and go?
Also - saw a Uniden 450 in Harvey Normal for $250. Would it be worth it? They had some more expensive models too.

Pretty sure they are the same. I have dealt directly with the manufacturers before today and had a unit directly from them. Still working fine.

Here is a pretty good over view of who uses what. http://copradar.com/preview/chapt7/ch7d1.html
We are the same as AUS Ka band.
Some radars can be programmed for your chosen bands, most cheap to mid range ones come set up for the states as they cover a wide range.
In my experience most will work ok but give alot of false alerts from automatic doors, alarm systems on buildings, other radar detectors, those digital signs that show your speed and tell you to slow down etc.
Like anything you get what you pay for.
If you can buy a valentine one. You will not get false alerts ever. It will give you direction of the signal e.g in front behind or to the side of you. And it will give you the strenght=distance away.
They also give you the ability to programme any desired bands on or off and adjust the sensitivity as well.
I have used one for the last 10+ years and it has never let me down.
They are a few Bob more than most on the market but you will be glad when it saves a ticket each time.
Hope that helps in some way.

I don't know about the TPX specifically but it should be fine. Usually you can adjust a detector as to which bands it will detect. If you enable the band that the camera cars use you can get false warnings, it's a different band to the highway patrol cars.
The Valentine is good, as are the Escort series. The TPX has a growing number of users. A cheap radar detector could prove very expensive.

I don't ride fast anymore - but what with country roads constantly changing between 80 and 100 it can be hard to keep track sometimes. Also, when overtaking ... As Confucius would say; "If you have one eye on the speedo, you only have one eye left with which to find the way."

As has been mentioned previously camera cars have only weak radar, and it's pointing across the road, not along the road.
You will get very little warning of a camera car - but you will get a lot of false alarms on that band.
People told me, and I have no evidence to the contrary, but 130kph is about the max you can be doing and get down to a legal speed if an HP car radar sets off your alarm. OK, so if you were doing 145 you might get a ticket for 115. Better than walking.

It depends on the circumstances I would guess. I've had cases where the detector has picked up HP car from several kilometres away, it would appear he was running with his radar turned on. Other times all I've had is a short blip when the HP pilot obviously just checked my speed.
Can't say I use the detector much nowadays, even then I was only using it for making sure the overtakes could be undertaken without delay, if you know what I mean...:innocent:

Its the slow overtaking that pisses me off,I like to get up it and back in smartly.:msn-wink:

That could be about right, I got a ticket and the cop said I was doing over 130 but only 121 when he got a lock. I didn't hit the brakes hard though, I naively thought he'd got me anyway but a couple of less kphs would have reduced the points considerably.
Cheers
A friend of mine in America has upgraded his Radar Detector and will post me his old one. TPX 2.0 or something to that effect. Quick question - are they the same over there as they are over here - same frequencies - or am I wasting my time? Or can I just use it and go?
Also - saw a Uniden 450 in Harvey Normal for $250. Would it be worth it? They had some more expensive models too.
You are not wasting you money or time buying the TPX. I'm more than satisfied with the TPX and consider it as good as the V1 I once had. Better even because it's bike friendly, clicks into car or bike in a second. Never liked the in-helmet light system with the V1.
Don't look upon using a Detector as evading a revenue Creep, look upon it as a reminder of your speed creep. It's a safety device without the expensive paperwork. Only a few false alarms that I suspect- although you never know if they were real threats or fake news?
As said by others, it's when you pull out to overtake a slower vehicle that you have the confidence to get the manoeuvre done swiftly, reducing the danger of being on the wrong side of the centreline for unnecessarily too long. You can focus your attention fully on the road and surrounding vehicles (the imminent risks), not your speedo and distant shadows.

A very mature outlook on KB, and one that I fully agree with. What is happening to this site?
But yep, I've got a TPX 2.0 and while it's a useful tool, I can see it being for sale in the near future as it hardly ever gets used nowadays.
