View Full Version : Cutting out while riding?

G'day.

Not being one with magnificent knowledge of electrickery and it's workings, I thought I might ask the boffins instead.

2005 Hornet 900 (CB900F) is cutting out on me while riding. It surges slightly before cutting out, then has the FI and Engine light show. As i'm riding it essentially crash starts itself back into life with a bit of a splutter. At first I thought it could be gunk in the tank/fuel filter/pump, but then I noticed that the digital Odo had reset itself back to 0 which leads me to believe it may be something to do with the ignition or reg/rec system. It has done this about 5 or 6 times on each of my last 3 commutes.

Not wanting to spend anymore money this side of Xmas, any ideas on what I could check?

Test your reg/rec and stator.
This sounds a lot like when the stator burnt out on my CB1300.

Links for how to test here. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=171226
Any $10 multimeter will do for the purpose off these tests.

Results from quick multimetering expedition.

Battery alone: 12.84V
Battery w/ Key on (Headlights) - 12.18V
Bike Idiling - 13.60V
Bike at 5k RPM - 14.04V

I found this link (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=227432&d=1293653888) from the other thread, but it stops me at the first junction saying the Charging system is likely OK.

I had a quick look, and I can't trace the Reg/Rec cabling without dismantling more than i'd like to on a weekday, so for any further testing I may have to wait till Saturday and do it with a hangover.

Any further ideas I can check?

EDIT: In terms of full disclosure: I installed a new Stebel horn on the bike earlier in the week, although the first instance of the cutting out was before that....
EDIT 2: Just remembered if it's of any help, all the cutouts have occured within the first 10 mins of my commute, I let the bike warm up before I ride it, but maybe need to leave it for a little longer?

I've been somewhat antisocial for the last few years... Have only been back on a bike for bang on 12 months, and I seem to have lost my internet-abuse giving mojo. Perhaps I need to practice on DangerousBastard for old times sake.

Probably a live wire shorting out on the frame or fractured wiring somewhere...check for tight harness or chaffed wiring around the headstock area.
Worthwhile checking seeing you're saying its an intermittent fault

Your multi metering suggests everything is ok.
Try taking the bike for a ride until warm and then testing again.

Any other commons? E.g. always happens on a full lock?

I had a similar issue on my dr that turned out to be when I inched forward in the seat it partially unplugged the main power cable to the box that does thinking.

It is good to see the logins that just disappeared come back.

Re check when the bike is warmed up and check the battery level.

If it has an exhaust o2 sensor i would check that and the wiring going to it.

Pulled a fair few bits off today and had a look. After thinking about it, I ruled out the side stand switch as I don't see how that would wipe the odometer. My (albeit limited) understanding after a bit of googling is that if the odometer is being wiped, its due to a bad connection.

Chased some cabling, cleaned as many connections as I could, and reassembled.

Took it for a ride, and all is well with the world.

No cutouts at all, so I assume it was a dodgy connection. No idea which one of the ones that I redid, but all is right with the world again.
