Hello everyone,

I am currently customising a GN250... I know the usual groans about why would you do that but this is my first bike and I wanted to learn about motorbike so figured it was a good place to start.

Anyway I am really needing a photo of the centre stand set up.. when I got my bike it was kind of attached and had a bolt through it that wasnt the right length, The manual shows no bolt through it so its causing some confusing. Could someone please take a photo of the mounting of the centre stand on their bike and post it?

Did you consider the bolt might be there for a reason? It's a 30 year old bike, it may need a bit of "reinforcement".

The shaft that the stand mounts to the frame through is hollow and retained by a split pin. The previous owner (who started the customising) put a bolt through the hollow shaft. From an engineering point of view all it's doing is retaining the shaft so it doesn't fall out meaning you don't need a split pin, no strength being added!

The reason I'm confused is because when set up like in the manual the bike is a bit wobbly on the stand, this is probably because over the last 30 years the clearance has gotten larger!

I can chalk it up to another lesson in buying an already started customised project.

Thanks, this link has actually been very helpful for other stuff but it doesnt show the ends of the shaft going through the stand/frame where my mystery bolt is!

Isn't there a gn in every bike park and bike shop to look at.

The thing is ... a BOLT was never intended/designed to be used as the supporting element for the main stand. The shaft with the split pin is used as it makes a flush fit between ends. Using a (threaded) bolt means that a flush fit is not possible as wear on the threads will be rapid and cause the wobble you mention (and a loud rattle at idle with the stand up). If a bolt is to be used ... use one wit the exact diameter of the tube on the main stand. But check this is the exact diameter of the mounting holes on the frame ... otherwise the "wobble" will remain. Do not tighten the bolt so as to restrict the movement of the stand up and down. Also I suggest the use of a castellated nut ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castellated_nut ) and split pin to prevent it's accidental loosening and falling off.

Personally ... I recommend replacing the original item that was designed for the job.

Dont forget to wrap the pipe.

Thought you were customising it?

First move is surely weight reduction - throw the main stand away!
