Hey team. I'm new and a complete noob when it comes to things mechanically related. I am unaware of what I got myself into but I have recently bought a tr50 from my neighbor who is going overseas for $200. It's not running and I'm needing help getting it back on the road. I can provide photos and am located in central Auckland. Please help I am even ready to pay someone to get it back up and running.

Oh jesus.

is it all there?
Does it turn over?
is there any spark?
does it have fuel in the tank? is the fuel getting to the carb?
is it getting from the carb to the engine?
does it have compression?

if it has air, fuel, compression and spark it has to go, Dr Benz says so.

if the motor runs does it turn the back wheel? a sifty google suggests this to be some sort of CVT scooter thingy. So is the rubber band intact?

by the way getting it running might be the least of your issues: is it registered? or has it lapsed or on hold? does it have a WOF? If not, has it got all the shit it needs for a wof (working lights and blinkers and brakelights).

Now its running and legal, is it safe?

What are the tyres like? what are the wheel bearings and steering head bearings and swingarm pivot bearings and every other bearing like? When was the last time the fork oil was changed? are the shocks anything more than springy ornaments?

$200 might have been a bit expensive IMO. Or not. time will tell.

Not taking away from the importance of checking safety issues that would come from a WoF inspection, but these bikes don't require one.

Hey mate all I know so far is the battery is missing and the Kickstart didn't work. The wiring loom seems a little tedious. Also the manifold for the exhaust seems to be missing. I recently had my car crashed so pretty keen to just get this running and meet all the regulations for it to be a moped. Might I add I'm a student who doesn't know much on these and is flatting up in Auckland. I can send you photos if you are an enthusiast on these and even sway money to you if you can help me run it.

That will stop it from working. First step, get a battery. Does the kick start lever move or is it locked up?

You mean 'dubious'?

Going to need one of those then.

How much have you got to spend?

Kickstart moves, can get a battery i mean i realise the basic air, spark, fire but my first step would be to find a battery. I could go to scootling, perhaps, or even a motorcycle mechanic.

Doesn't require a wof, after trying and attempting to kick start, it almost feels useless, there is fuel however the kick start is loose and shakes a bit.

I sold a going one of these last year, $1 res and got $800 for it. Be careful how much you chuck at it, but they are fun little bikes.

I am willing to spend between 400-500 to make it decent and run effectively. The end goal is to buy a motorbike however I do wanna take care and make use of the tr50 at this stage.

Willing to speed 400-500 on top of it to get it running, its really a moped no need for wof and tyres seem alright and the front brakes are great the back are completely gone.

You can push the kickstart over on these with a finger pretty much. Take the sparkplug out and see if the piston is rising and falling when you kick it over. While the sparkplug is out put it against the head and kick it over (if the kickstart is doing its job) and check for spark.
