Sup guys, just got my first bike and now I want to ride it 24x7 lol. Loving the feeling of being free on the roads and twisting the throttle:2thumbsup. Was just wondering if there are any other riders out there who are willing to ride and chill and visit some cool spots round auckland or even outside auckland:headbang:. I live in Mount Roskill if there are any riders around the area who might be keen. Cheers

lol. Me too. OP, please have a good read through some recent threads so you can get an idea of the standing and knowledge of a couple of members who have posted on your thread. A clue, Moi is on the money, lone rider, above, far, far, less so.

Oop, those rides are a great way to meet others for leisure rides. And you can gauge the standard of the company you want to keep.

You would be best just to ride by yourself if you are new to riding as riding with a stranger could create pressure to keep up with them or even if they ride at your speed could create a distraction in that you become focussed on them but less on the road.

Cassina's other very "informative" posts on motorcycling include: cornering with your foot down, the track is more dangerous than the road etc.

Don't forget slowing right down and moving to the far left of the lane when faced with oncoming traffic in case someone tries an overtake. Because that action isn't going to encourage an overtake...

I have seen that very thing happen with a new rider, it was his first ride with a group and he attempted to pace with some of the more experienced riders and bin his bike by running wide on a right hand bend and thankfully ending up in a metal dump, the drop just a few meters away was quite a long way down. He was never seen again on this site, it must have frightened the shit out of him.

Are you suggesting he might have felt pressured to keep up with the others?

That speaks volumes about the lack of group leadership and planning more than anything else.

Stick to that plan but take a dictionary just in case no body turns up. That slow ride thread posted earlier would be ideal.

Cassina does have point on that point. It happens, not always but it happens.

That speaks volumes about the lack of group leadership and planning more than anything else.

It speak volumes of what can go on inside in the helmet of a new rider's first group ride. Sometimes it can be all to much to take in and that weird notion of ''I'll just follow them and learn'' is mistakenly brought into the equation, the results may vary.

Exactly. So while she does go on about it rather a lot she also has a perfectly valid point.

(And I'd go so far as to say it happens reasonably often).

Please list the "all too much to take in" examples and how the "I'll just follow them and learn" notion could come about.

It's not only new riders either.

Even experienced riders will often find themselves in the mindset of "I mustn't let him get away from me or I'll look like I'm not as good a rider as him".

I call that pressure to keep up.

Just for you.
On leadership: Laying out the ride rules and expectations (if lengthy) can be ‘’All too much to take in’’ for a first time/new rider. Keep the planning and most importantly, ride numbers to a minimum.

The ride I spoke of earlier had around 50 bikes on the ride. That in itself can be overwhelming for a first time/new rider. It has been mentally documented by me and others in the past on rides of this size that, those who have not been on such a ride can feel like they have to ‘perform’ while in the company of more experienced riders. One returning rider some years ago lost his life on the Coromandel because of that very reason. I heard it first hand from someone at the scene.

Don't fool yourself, it happens.

Yes, I saw a nice new Speed Triple become very second hand that way. A rider in this position will often (if not always) say ''I don't what happened there'' whereas others on the ride know exactly what happened there. Human nature I guess.

So like I wrote earlier, it's about the lack of leadership and planning more than anything and particularly in that case.

For anyone ''who have not been on such a ride, feel like they have to ‘perform’ while in the company of more experienced riders'' I would have said that's an individual decision. I guess we will stay divided on this point.
I have added the word 'can' in that post to reflect a more accurate viewpoint.

That is it from me on the subject.

an "turning infront of an ocoming vehicle is OK if your bike has low down torque"

and something along the lines of "riding into a dozen dogs is normal and unavoidable" or "everyone else is very lucky not to have crashed as much as me"

and "things come at you too fast to do anything except panic brake and bin it"

oh! such pearls!
