View Full Version : Southland and Harleys

I've just spent 4 days there. Didn't see many bikes, which is not surprising given the weather. But they were all Harleys.

Is that all people ride down there? Saw some pretty average riding as well, including one rider who almost swerved into an oncoming car while overtaking. It was really windy, but either don't ride or learn how to control your bike properly. .

Highly likely it was a Auckland rider on tour struggling with a road that was not glass smooth.

You forgot to mention how fantastic the country is down South.

Glass smooth roads in Auckland - yeah, right!

Ahem... you actually mean how terrible it is and how North Islanders should stay on their island? ;)

Didn't you?

I have family down there and have visited many times. I just never noticed how many Harleys there are.

Looks like SH1 between Mataura and Invercargill is being wrecked by all the trucks. Thats happening everywhere in NZ though thanks to the Nats increasing the truck weight limit a while back. But the other roads are good, and much better than most roads near Auckland.

Yeah, I like Southland, especially when it's not wet or windy. I'm told it's been a real crap summer.

I spent a few days in Southland recently. Not many cars around, it was mainly Jafas in rental cars.

When I went down South on the Hornet a decade or so ago I saw bugger all bikes, even posted about it on KB. There may be some bikes but nobody much was riding them. Maybe the bikes are all in the museums? It's true they have some nice roads down there but they think they have all the nice roads, 'cause most of the inbred hillbillies haven't ever crossed Cook Straight.

That's like Wellingtonians raving about the Paekak hill which is pretty ordinary really, or the Rimutaka hill, which was OK once - but that was a bloody long time ago.

Or even the Dorklanders who think the Coro loop is the be all and end all, because they've never been anywhere else.

There, that should have offended just about everybody. :devil2:

Hey - what about the Akaroa GP.

Actually that road has deteriorated at lot in condition in the past five -6 years. They need to close the friggen thing for a day or two and do some proper repairs - patches over patches are falling apart and some roading knob has recently painted new future patch circles over the patched patches ........

Plus it's getting bloody busy. And I am surprised at the size of the buses they haul over to take the Cruise ship crowd out of Akaroa on day trips. Yeah sail into a beautiful harbor with a quaint little township then fuck off over the hill to see broken Christchurch or yet another winery .....

all i can say to you kind sir is :motu:and then :motu: again, i have lived and ridden in the B,O,P. taranaki, nelson/marlborough, canterbury (north, mid and south), west coast and now southland and yes there are good roads all over the country for motorcyclists but the advantage we have down here is the lack of traffic and the number of good motorcycle roads

Roads, Fonterra alone have a fleet of 500 trucks running day and night, then there are the sheep trucks to the works (AGL alone take on a good day 24000 sheep), log trucks are never-ending from Tuatapere to Bluff (1000 tons a day)the train has been gone for years so every thing is logistic trucking apart from coal, and meat, and milk going to port, considering this, the roads are not too bad. The back roads here are awesome , just need to watch for agricultural activity.

Group of harleys spotted, likely passing through, there are a heap of bikes come Scenic South ( many adventure type groups likely on hire bikes) and through to check out E Hayes, Burt Munro, and Motorcycle Meca, the bonus to travel up the middle via Devils staircase or via Catlins to Otago.

None of us here have any issue with weather.

So, what has the over the ditch to offer please, apart from Lion Red on tap?

Do not stick to highway one. Better roads to get to where you want to to be.

No wonder you haven't seen many bikes ... :killingme

Yeah, I know. But I was commuting between Gore and Invercargill, and it was the easiest route. I'd avoid it like the plague if I was riding!

Gore to Invercargill, not yer daily commute but recommend turn right as you leave Gore ( Charlton Rd) , travel to Waimumu, travel further 5 k's
turn right onto Goodwin Rd, right toward Hedgehope, past Glencoe monument a left onto Cross Road and find your way to Dacre, with bit luck you will miss the milk tankers that way and save the wear on the middle of yer tyre.

Favourite Gore/IVC route. Well pointed out. The main road is better quality in terms of width and surface but the traffic spoils it.

And it has less corners. Which might be a plus for some, but a minus for me.

Having just spent a couple of days riding a Harley and waving at people, I'm now stopping as it causes adverse reactions.

I don't want to cause a crash.

The Coro Loop is over rated. Everyone who has a chance to ride it, should do, so they can decide for themselves. Done it twice myself, a second time to confirm my first thought. Now that Awakino Gorge/Mt Messenger hit the spot.

yup gotta agree on both counts, the coro loop is to busy to be much fun but the awakino mt mess road is fun, done that stretch many times, but i also enjoy the east coast and waioeka gorge.
