I'm interested in what your motorcycle costs to go to and from Akaroa as a comparison (160km, mostly open road with hills if not lucky enough to be in Canterbury)

2002 KDX200 costs $40
$28 for fuel
$12 for 2T Oil.

About $25 a tank of gas for round trip.

That makes S1000RR a bargain performer. Cheaper on fuel but 10 times more horsepower.

Yep, but can't take the S1000RR up the stock routes :) (I'm only guessing here though, as it is technically possible I guess)

My MT07 uses about 10l to get there and back.
My ZX6Rs fuel light would come on just as I got home so that would be some where around 13-14l
My RGV250 used the most, I would have to top up in Little River so that would have used about 16l plus 2t oil

It will take about $20 of petrol for the DR-Z250

Never done it on my bike but I'd imagine at 160km it would come in at about $18 / $19 for me. A shade under 10 litres. May be even better but I've not done a decent out of town ride since I got my bike sorted properly so not sure. Sounds like a good reason to go for a decent run though to find out.

Spirited riding on the thou would see me use near on a tank, so around 17l.

I get roughly 220k on 10-11L. By upping the pace a bit on the open road, I can barely squeeze under 4l /100K

I've never done that particular route but, typically 160 kilometres of fairly spirited riding would use around 6.5 litres of fuel.

0.025 L per L fuel, which is $1 per litre of fuel extra on top of the cost of the fuel.

4L of 2T oil costs $150

I run good oil cause I ride at constant revs for quite some distance, which I hear is bad for 2 stroke engines.

Mine cost about 20 plus a stand down period at the doctors getting something repairs and 1/3 of its brake fluid.

Around 8.5l for 160k's on the ducati st, so around $18 would be a rough guess.

Our DT 230 Lanza with WR 200 jetting hits reserve at 150k on an 11ltr tank. I guestimate about 7ltr / 100km at 100kmh, ish. Oil, not sure. I just keep the reservoir full but it is thirsty. That's the G/F riding, I've hit reserve below 100km.....<_< being a hoon. Not exactly a tourer but hilarious on the appropriate roads. What oil you using? I've settled on motul 710 (I think) and it smells nice but not as nice as Castrol TT. Castrol fouls the powervalve more pootling around and I had more residue from the pipe.

Factor in the frequency of speeding tickets.

Speaking of which, they have two spots for camera vans, there on average once a week, Straight near birdlings flat, next to lake Elesmere and straight just out of Tai Tapu on the Akaroa side. I don't speed very often, so have never had a ticket, but I still slow down to 90 when I see them oddly.

Wait till super cheap auto or repco have their oil sales and you can pick up 4l of TTS for about $60

The Suzuki Boulevard M50 (at 100 km/hr max where appropriate for admiring the view) does 4.4 L/100 km.

Depending on the last decimal on the price of regular that'd be around $13.50 and all done in armchair comfort.

Fuel consumption has never been an issue for me on my bikes but if I owned a car/4wd with the same accelerating time it sure would be.

So how much fuel do you use for your bike to go to Akaroa and back?

What is the bike you ride too?

Plus ~$2.80 for engine oil (changed every 700km)

I track all my mileage, and my Speed Triple does 6.6l/100km on average on 95+ petrol. Not fantastic, and drinks a small amount of oil too.

It's about the same economy as my 800kg, 1.2l car, but pretty different acceleration.

That's just a bit thirstier than mine, I don't check regularly and when I did it it would have been on a trip so... If I worked out everything that motorcycling cost I would've quit long ago. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

My S3 doesn't take any oil between services.

For most people the Akaroa ride could be expected to be a bit more thisty than a cruise on the open road - even if the cruising was at slightly(?) illegal speeds.

(On second thoughts there's not *that* much hill, it not like SH43, The Gentle Annie or...)

I think my GN125H runs on nothing compared with the figures in this thread! Went to little river and back and also commuted all week and did another cruise and still did not hit my reserve ? I've reached 272Km for just 7L of fuel. For a 10L tank that's almost 3.88L per 100Km. But usually I put some patrol every 180km just incase.

Pertol is an insignificant cost on a 160km road trip.

On the DR I'd prob avg 9ish L to do 160km, so that's about $16.20.
Doesn't use any oil but a good massage includes some (for me not the bike) but not itemised individually but hey She'd prob charge more than $240hr if she had to waste time precise billing services.
Then theres a couple bourbons for me, $18.
Tips for the strippers $60
Steak and chips at the truckstop $19
Coffee and Mince and cheese pi at servo $8
Doctors visit $27
Penicillian prescription $38
Duct tape $4
Ear plugs $0.30c

Back to reality I reckon the real running cost is wear and tear on your riding gear. A good helmet, clothing, boots and gloves set is about $2k to $2.5K easy.... and how long does that last???? More or less than 1400L of fuel or 27,000km of riding?????

4.8 L per 100 km, unless I go faster, when it's 5.2 L per 100 km.

Does anyone really budget their riding like this? Surely the cost is incidental to the ride.

Nope.

Go riding, fill the thing with gas and take very little notice of how much, park ready for next time.

Otherwise as posted above, you also need to add in the % of the cost for the next set of tyres, chain/sprockets, servicing, brake pads, don't want to go there.....

I did that once. Worked out each ride to Akaroa cost me somewhere between $130-$150.

Hads
9th February 2017, 12:57
I worked it out, as I commute in to CHCH from Akaroa every day, I needed to know how much more it was costing than my alto (660cc engine). It turns out it was costing twice as much, so now I only ride the motorbike in once a week, instead of previously 4 days a week.

You could say get a cheaper bike to run, bla bla nonsense, but the KDX wasn't purchased with the intention of being a commuter, more for exploring offroad tracks and having fun.

Then the reason I started this thread was to figure out if it is excessive when compared to others, which I think it is when compared to a 4 stroke, I think the DT 230 however uses more fuel and possibly oil.

What's the bonus for arriving with A: a great big smile across your face, rather than B: crawling into the carpark in an Alto ?

I once owned a shit pig of bluesmoke bike (GT550) that used way - like two and a half times way - more fuel than my Dad's Subaru - and Subaru's are not known for their economy

2002 KDX200 costs $40

My ST is similar. Averages 5.5L/100km. Minimum is 4.8L/100K which seems to be when I am touring with panniers and 2-up and max is about 6 L/100k when I go out for a blat in the twisties.

Fuel costs? Mmmm, around 10 cents per kilometer. Tyre costs? About the same. Insurance? Around 6 cents on my annual mileage. Rego? Around 6 cents as well. Servicing? Depends how much I do myself, but around 6 or 7 cents.

Makes my little runabout car seem a bargain at around 25 cents per km all up...nowhere near as cool as the bike mind you.

I'm pleased that my tyre costs are way less at least, I expect 10000km out of my rear and about 15000km out of my front, the rear cost about $200 and so did the front.

I guess that is the win from having a less powerful bike with narrower tyres.

at 160km round trip my XT660R would do close to 3 round trips to a tank "22 liters"
21/22 kilometers per liter.... toss some slower offroad stuff in that goes up to 23/24km per liter
can do each day of the Dusty Butt on a tank..

They are of course user figures without taking into account riding styles, conditions, fuels or bike mods.

Interesting thing with some of these replies is the L/100km being mentioned aren't qualified, for example if I rode my KDX 200 on the flat for 160km I would have about 6.6 L/100km so 160km would use about 11L of fuel or $23, plus $11 of oil, so probably $34, that is a 15% difference due to the hill.

Erm, I don't know. I fill up when the fuel light comes or the odo gets to around 180km. I pay by eftpos and don't even look at the pump.

Operating cost is only an issue when I need chain and sprockets at the same time as a new tyre and the wife is in one of her moods.
