View Full Version : Motorcycle industry dream jobs

After coming back to NZ for a job I've decided I don't want to do anymore I'm in a good position of not having to work for a few months and taking a crack at finding work that I enjoy, while being able to travel around the country (preferably SI) to find it.
Sadly, for the 5 mins thought I've given it, I lack the imagination to think of anything other than sales or becoming a bike mechanic
So KB brain trust, is that a realistic assessment or are there some potential industry positions out there that you'd consider a 'dream job' that would be worth a nudge?

Vetting the models they use when shooting photos of motorcycles for magazines and the internet. Someone has to do it.
Someone probably has to carefully position them on or near the bike too. I could do that.

Funny you should mention that. A calendar on the wall of my local motorcycle emporium caught my eye yesterday. It showed a picture of a charming young woman with eye catching, bare, bosoms. They had a lovely, soft sheen to them. I wondered if that was professional lighting, photoshop or an actual job. Photographers bosom buffer and nipple tweaker.

Yes that's an interesting point. I just did a few months as a fleet manager of a couple of scooters and have to say I rather enjoyed it though. It was a good mix of people and machines, but I won't find something like that in NZ me thinks.

Yeah nah. Don't have the cash, contacts or passion to make a run at something like that. Plus I think you can have a better work/life balance being a rung or two down from the top dog/business owner :)

There is no shortage of skilled labour in most industries in NZ at moment so you really need to identify your core skills and run with that.
I've been down the self employed route and doing stuff i really like, its not the same when you are forcing it out as work.
Also switching industries you need to be REALLY good at what you do. I've moved sideways from truck driving with bit of loading ymself and unloading to more mostly just forklift driving now. Its a highly skilled competitive workplace and you have to work hard to prove yourself to colleagues.

More commonly known as a make up artist. Any top notch shoot will have a make up artist, stylist and hair dresser.
Funnily enough as the photgrapher you have so much technical stuff to worry about you dont get time to really appreciate the aldies beauty.
In some circumstance favourabvle lighting can be had from windows or reflections but usually off camera flash with various diffeser devices is used.

The shortage must be a akl problem then.
would agree with identify skills etc. Maybe look at other jobs you wouldn't normally consider.
dream mbike related job would be
. Something to do with running a race track like the one in Wanaka?
. Developing a motorcycle project
. Working in a mbike museum
. Taking people on trips as a guide
. Being a journalist or similar and getting paid to go to the various mbike exhibitions around the world.
. working with a large importer with a variety of bikes/makes and bits and pieces
variety, in people and/or items will make the job so much better
and something that will stretch you imagination from time to time.
or something completely unrelated, driving cranes for example, or PBBaNT

Dream jobs in the motorcycle industry? You're kidding, right?
Given the opportunity to chase the perfect job, I'd be looking at Marlborough Sounds water taxis or maybe working for a Port Company on a tugboat somewhere. Seaworks or whoever has the Cook Straight power cable observation contract would be the go too but I'm not sure I have the ideal personality type to spend long periods in close confines with others.
Keep the motorcycling a passion/hobby would be my $0.10.

Eh, why on earth would I bother reading it?:bleh:
Speaking of dream jobs. I bumped into a couple of fullas in town recently with a pair of wee trail bikes on the back of their ute. My interest was peeked as they did not look like farmers and the bikes were plated and in good nick. They inspect power poles for a living. A bike or on foot is the only way to access large areas apparently.
I would defo do that for a living!
It also crossed my mind that GPS mapping popular trail riding areas for emergency evac plans could be an interesting start up. I've often wondered what would happen if I broke a leg at our local area. Some of the places we get to are quite away from a helicopter landing area and no way would a quad get access. It would be hard enough describing where an injured person was let alone accessing them.

I'm still at work (closed, lights off, signs in, headphones on, naked from the waist down etc) and a tourist just shook the locked door and stared at me. I'm too polite so I went to have a chat in case they needed help with something urgent only unlock and open to the door to be asked if I was open.

I worked as a salesman for Eric Wood in early 1990, Manchester St Christurch , commission and a very small retainer, they were Eric Wood Suzuki back then. New Suzuki's and a bunch of second hand bikes on the floor as well. The deal was, if you sold a bike , a second hand one, you would get your money for selling it but! ..if the bike came back to the workshop because of any faults, the cost of those faults was deducted from your wage packet. Work that out ..

Considering any motorcycle industry will be seasonal and not that much during the winter. Better see if you can kick start a project to export NZ made electrical motorbikes (E-motorbike) by making them cheaper than the U.S.A Zero FSX models and hotter than the Harley Davidson Live wire project... Seems easy to build the only thing is the programing.

I read some interesting comments when I was looking for work overseas and one was that there is never a shortage of work, but there are a shortage of people who are not willing to retrain to fill the gaps. People will sit on the dole for years (the example given was ex mining towns in the US) complaining they can't get work all the while they could be spending that time trying to point themselves or market themselves in a new direction where there is work. It is easier said than done like most things and is not a complicated concept, but it was a comment that I think will stick with me for a long time and made me look at the job market quite differently.

Practicality should be top of that list. I haven't seen anything come out yet that will take people to E scoots or bikes and keep them there. I kept a couple on the road in my 'winter away' job and while enjoyable it was no walk in the park (apart from that time I had to walk a broken down one through the park. Ahhh, memories :D)

My first job out of school was as a storeperson rocking around on forlifts and stockpickers. The only CV I've ever made since then was for that job overseas so I did OK out of it reputation wise :D As fun as it was it's not something that captures the interest much now sadly. There are certianly some well paying opportunies going for non muppets in the freight industry. I even spied a couple of roles in Blenheim for a trucking firm earlier in the week if you're keen for another change mate.

Noice! Start ups are good for that. Find a problem, ask a few people why it's done that way, don't find a compelling reason and can think of a better way to do it, change it, bam, every one is happy :D Such a cool vibe.
A few offers are coming in now, nothing that exciting and nothing to do with motorbikes, but at least I know in a few months I won't be on the street
I chat to a few people about their professions every now and again as they come through the shop and have (in my own mind) broken employment down 3 parts:
- collegues (People that are awesome can make a shit job awesome)
- pay (Decent compensation can also put a polish on a turd)
- job satisfaction (self explanatory)
If you have none of those working in your favour, you're in the wrong job and should quit immediatly for the sake of sanity (although crazy people apparently do have more fun).
If you have 1 out of 3, you're still in the wrong job but have a bit of give
2 out of 3 you are not doing bad and are probably in a pretty good place and if you have all
3 out 3 you are in dream job/as good as it gets territory.
I always just aim for 2 so I have something to complain about :D

Many people who try and get qualifications to get into a new industry find the qualification is worthless because employers today want experienced people and are not interested in training anyone. They forget that someone trained them for them to be where they are today.
Yes and No. Bits of paper with some sort of qualification is bloody near mandatory in these days of university qualified with little or no real life work experience HR people.

Both are good. You often make a lot of life long connections while getting those bits of paper as well, so while it's always good to know someone you can actually get to know that someone through the papers route, if that makes sense.
Sadly there is little merit in what you study now. Most job applications say you must have a degree, but the fact that it doesn't matter what the degree is often in I find a bit tragic (it's a global thing too, not just NZ).

If it's only 5 or so months, so I wouldn't worry about those warning you about turning your hobby into a job, if you still enjoy it after 5 months and can keep doing it then you may as well right?
I've always thought being a reviewer/blogger is the best, it's hard work writing a thousand words on a bike in a way that is interesting, unbiased and honest. But you get to ride some cool stuff and structure your day around it.

I know of a couple of local people for whom this worked well. One is still in the motorcycle industry.
The other, John, was sitting at a dock in California as a crew were loading a yacht. At one point a couple of the guys were struggling with something so John lent a hand. Having started he just carried on working. At the completion of loading a crew member told him to stick around, they were about to have a few driinks and something to eat and John was invited to join them.
In conversation he was asked what brought him to California, he replied that he was touring the world visiting diving spots of interest.
The next topic of discussion was an enquiry as to what he did for a living. "I'm a diesel mechanic."
"Stay there, don't go away." And his companion rushed off and came back with someone from management who after a brief discussion offered John a job.
The yacht was Phillipe Cousteau's 'Serenade' .

Its actually owners reviews that are likely to be the most honest but magazine/newspaper reviews are good in the fact as they let you know whats new on the market. Some reviews and the motorbike reviews in "The Press" newspaper can be 50% about the history of the manufacturer or the model of bike and I find the actual review starts about half way through the article. Thats how some motorcycle reviewers fill up article space maybe. I would guess road tester jobs would be very sort after despite likely not offering a huge remuneration.
I think half the articles on stuff etc are written by people sitting at home anyway
Someone who owns a bike is more likely to be biased though because they want to see the positives in their 'investment' than another who has no financial interest. After they have sold that bike is when the rose tinted glasses come off, so long as you get in before nostalgia kicks in
Then again if you write a model off too badly in the professional world you probablty will find yourself short of bikes to review from certain 'slighted' manufacturers over time.
In that vein I wonder if an app reviewing sales and services of motorcycle stores around the country would gain traction. Difficult to make money from that sort of thing unless you have a good amount of stores on board, but it would be fun.

...to be paid a handsome stipend for riding a bike whenever one felt the desire to get out on the highways and byways, reporting on road defects and dangers, which after being duly logged into the road repair and maintenance schedule, were acted upon by the various contractors by the following Wednesday...lunch and accommodation vouchers for the task would be supplied to you in advance of any ongoing work and a fuel card with unlimited ceiling would also be part of the overall package and if it was cold and miserable and you couldn't be fucked, no one else gave a fuck either...

I can't decide where to go though, I've narrowed it down to somewhere in the S.I. although ..... there's some pretty good riding up north to fill in w/ends with.

I gather the Pizza delivery places (Pizza Hut/ Dominoes ) are always looking for couriers ..
We also had a Dail-a-Tinnie service here for a while - I'm sure there has to be openings for that ... (I understand ours went out of business for legal reasons)

Hearing ya..Did you know, and we may have touched on this at the pub last Monday, but February is the busy time for job applications. After the holidays etc people want a change after some reflection time and the mindfuck of getting back into the working routine. I wouldn't mind trying something out of the motor industry as I have been in it except for 9 months on the dole in the early 90s on the West Coast(good times, good times) for over 30 years.

Not quite the same. In the 80's & 90's there were a few courier companies around that had owner operator motorcycle couriers. I worked for one for a couple of years. We made pretty good coin riding around on motorcycles getting urgent stuff through the traffic to where it needed to be.
The company I worked for ( Roadrunner) had 6 or 7 full time riders, Castle Sprint had close to 20. Taxi Trucks had one or two. A few office supply companies & lithograph outfits had them too.
Sub 60 & Courier Systems (now Post Haste) also had some but changed them to cars/ vans after a fatal accident.
I worked in Auckland but have met guys who did the same job in London, Amsterdam & a few other places.

Church or politics I haven't decided which pays the most
Both require a reasonable level of story stretching and an ability to ignore other people's opinions.
The church does have a uniform, though but the food and wine are a bit sketchy , and ya work sunday's

This just turned up on my Facebook page thing
Trevor Pierce Yamaha are looking for a junior person to work as part of our Service Department team.
Sadly our current junior has a direction to follow and he will be missed :(
We are looking for an enthusiastic person, with some general motorcycle repair knowledge: oil changing; tyre changing; with attention to detail and care at all times.
If you think you're that person please email your details/cv to admin@tpyamaha.co.nz

You could also consider running a youtube channel?
There's already hundreds of motovloggers, most of them are shit and talk about fuck all, but a portion of them seem to make some pocket money, others, including a few car bloggers have left their job to pursue it full time.
I'd hate to recommend you start yet-another-motovlog but if you can think of a new and cool way to make it interesting then there could be something in it.
The only problem of course is that it can take years to become established enough to make money off it.

I thought about doing an offroad/adventure riding v-log when I was out everyday after work, even bought a camera for it, but I didn't get as far as editing even just one video
Did some rookie shit too like trying to record a ride over the Maungatapu at 1am which turned out as 1/2 an hour of blackness with occasional shots of the moon. Riviting stuff.
Not a bad idea though. Have you tried anything like that?

I didn't want to leave before April, but then the good weather has gone so I might as well stay till November, and if I stay till November then I might as well hang about for the summer.....and then we all know it's best to wait till April to leave.... I'm a sucker for falling into those traps haha
We want to stay south too, although I would like to take a look around some of the North Island at some point in my life.
At this stage The Catlins, Stewart Island and Golden Bay are at the top of the 'lets fuck off here' list, so unless the bus or bike sells before the end of the summer we should be rolling around for a while until opportunity comes knocking (or we go knocking for it).

Workin on it! Have already had the missus crossing fords and navigating through herds of angry beef cattle on the WR last year, but ideally we want her to be able to drive the bus confidently first.
That's for her own good of course.
The fact I will be able to sip brandy/coffee/meths (depending on how working goes I guess) and read the paper while she drives me around has nothing to do with it at all
Have had a few job offers locally this week, but nothing overly exciting, so we'll see.

1985-1990 worked for bill russell honda doing a spare parts apprenticeship which i gained trade certificate in
1990-1995 brought and ran a fish n chip shop that 80% of the customers recieved via motorcycle delivery
1997-2003ish worked as a salesman for paul swift motorcycles
2007 to current work as a motorcycle contract courier
the couriering job has killed my passion for riding as a hobby,i rarely ride weekends now..but its a job i like.
An earlier poster mentioned his pay structure when selling for eric woods..mine for paul swift worked out great for me but i didnt start off on this deal...i got commisson only and it was 50% of the net profit on both new and used, comebacks on used bikes i paid half the net cost back,BUT i was allowed to wheel and deal my own bikes on the same basis with the owner.
some jobs on bikes ive seen in auckland are rubbish collectors on bikes, road inspectors on bikes,a medic, and a guy i always thought was a medic but hes a cameraman that gets to breaking news events fast

Get an offroad bike or something different and you might find it coming back. Or not, who knows :D
I did a little bit of delivery riding last year before jumping up the food chain and did enjoy it, but don't know if I could live anywhere big enough in NZ for it to be needed haha.

Actually getting paid to make videos, having a budget for some pro gear, the ability to travel the world and of course pay for my mates to come along too. Currently with my Youtube Channel I make about $160 every 6 months (400 views a day) which is just enough to pay for fuel every now and then. But as it's a community and reciprocal, I enjoy others vids and my way to pay that back is to share what we have in NZ.

Yeah so quick update. QT fuckin sucks for finding somewhere to live, had to ditch the bus and regret it all the time. Bus life is the tits. There will be more busing with a motorbike in tow in my life in the future for sure.
Working here www.hpacademy.com So far so sweet. Cushy job as far as the industry goes.
Not enough motorbikes via work or hobby wise, but we're doing 4x4 thing instead at the moment which is cool.
So basically upping and leaving, which is something that often induces too much fear to ever seriously consider, has worked out well, for now.
