The forecast for Paeroa looks a bit dickey-depending of course on your source of the forecast-This recent Easterly weather pattern is likely to cause some problems for several days.At best it looks like the odd light shower for Sunday, would this be enough to cancel the meeting?-I ask as I have a fair distance to travel and from Paeroa I have planned to carry on and do a NI road trip for a few days more-if I go to the Met Service 10 day forecast (which I don't really trust) the whole area I intended to cover looks like crap weather,so I am debating whether to pull the plug until summer comes back.Any thoughts on how riders and organisers will react to inclement weather?

Now that's a good idea-will do tomorrow when the forecasts are a bit more up to date. You may recall two years back that weather forced the cancellation but this was after many fans had paid their entry fee so there were some grumpy folk out there. You could get your money back, but like myself and many other folk,we did not bother and let Paeroa keep it as a donation towards their running costs for that day.

Yes, I recall, and I bet as part of their management plan they'll have some form of weather limitation.

FYI these events are probably fully underwritten, which means the only people you're helping by not getting a refund are the insurance companies, as you're reducing their losses.

I seriously doubt if the clubs doing street race meetings would take out weather insurance. Public liability, yes, but that wouldn't be cheap, even through MNZ.
Weather is a gamble you take with these events.

The 10 day forecasts are computer generated directly from global climate models, and are really just an indication of what could happen.

I gave up on Met Service forecasts yonks ago-WINDYTY is the go these days, they show the weather in any area in NZ in 3 hour increments, 5 days ahead with a high degree of accuracy, its also updated every hour.FYI it shows Paeroa weather for Sunday as partly cloudy all day and no rain, the organisers must use Windy as well because they are saying its all go.

Concur, Metvuw is my go to forecast. The Met service rural weather forecast app is pretty good, too. Very good actually.

Apparently cloudy with a few light showers, 26c according to the met service app. Looking at metvuw it's light easterly's with showers, some enough to wet the track for 20 minutes IMHO. Humid and quite still. That's my interpretation right now. Shit loads of flies off track....

Axolotl, got a spare seat in your Phat Magna? Looks like it's worth a punt. Final decision Saturday am. Failing that, if your arse is not offensive you could be my bitch. Not in the biblical sense FFS.

Would have to head down morning of and then home again in the afternoon. Definitely doable but a long day nonetheless.

That's a regional forecast. The rain forecast for Paeroa shows almost no rain for tomorrow, so it might be OK.

But who knows, it could just as easily bucket down.

WE KNOW THE TOPIC ON EVERYONE'S LIPS
THIS WEEK HAS BEEN THE WEATHER GOING
INTO THIS WEEKEND.
The forecast for both Saturday and Sunday is actually looking
pretty good, despite what's happening outside your window
now!
In terms of the Battle of the Streets, NO decisions will be made
about racing until Sunday morning. So until we're in a position
where we have to make a decision, it's business as usual -
street barriers are being loaded and transported into Paeroa
today, grids have been marked, fencing will start to go into
place tomorrow and the riders will be on their way.
See you all on Sunday!

If anyone is heading South to Paeroa via SH2, just be careful if you're taking your bike, there have been some roadworks in the area over the last couple of months which are still ongoing, and the areas most recently sealed have been ripped up.

The worst patches are at the SH1 end, which are the most recent. So lots of loose chip being washed around with the rain:

http://i67.tinypic.com/i53st5.png
http://i67.tinypic.com/2z8b1jr.png

It's sometimes both lanes, and it's best to slow down when you see them, and stick to the very smooth (but extremely slippery in the rain) tyre ruts, as the centre and sides are literally just piles of loose chip.

This issue is known to the council/road contractors, but will take a little time to be fixed as they were only ripped up in the last day or two.

Ride safe.

Hey guys,

I have been in NZ for 1.5 years now and recently got myself a r6 again. I came across an advert for the Paeroa race last week and looks like it could be a really good day out. I take it this is like New Zealand version of the TT?

I am thinking of riding down but if the weather is bad i may just drive instead.

Is anyone else riding down from auckland area that i can tag along with.

Thanks

On a good day a crowd of about 20,000 people. Less TT and think more of street race around small village.
All the main street shops stay open selling food drink and booze.
Take it easy getting there, the whole route infested with road policing units as nearly every year someone doesn't quite make it there or home again.
Take some ear plugs or buy them at circuit, you get real close to racing, couple of points where you cans tash your helmets and ridng gear for five to ten bucks....

And that sort of attitude explains why dealerships are dying off and the internet is taking away sales. Paeora and Wanganui are as effectively a full on trade day/expo opportunity as wed be likely to get.
Plenty of people take cars and dealers could ship stuff.

Yep, seems like a wasted opportunity when you have access to a large amount of motorcyclists at a motorcycle specific event, who would no doubt be interested in motorcycle products (or anything else automotive).

Rod Millen hosted his annual Leadfoot festival over the other side of the hills from Paeroa in Hahei a couple of weeks ago, and had plenty businesses on site with a lot of stuff to look at, or sell/order to the public who came from near and far in cars or on motorbikes.

Lots of $ to be made if you're a business who wants want to turn up and sell stuff.

yip, maybe, but travel on xmas day, sell boxing day, what are the penal rates alone for that, especially when everyone is over xmas. paeroa would be way more lucrative than wanganui, and a huge range of dealers within a couple of hours too.

Sorry, I missed that part (meaning) of your original post. I should have known, but forgot as I usually see it on TV afterwards.

You're right, there will be some obstacles compared to the Paeroa date, but It would still be worthwhile considering the numbers of the crowd involved though wouldn't it?

I was actually hoping to do the same myself. I did however go into red baron this morning and ended up getting a RST race leather jacket (2 piece) and back protector for $340. He had a big discount on afew of the jackets + pants. The jacket alone was $569 i think before the reduced price.

We had an ACC event in Auckland a couple of weeks back. Tons of riders, but only 2 retailers. One retailer was to busy trying to sell electric kids scooters to talk to customers. And only bikes for sale. If they had taken some racks of clothing and had saom real specials, they would have been making money. Motorcycle retail in NZ is in the dark ages.

then as if by magic as we approached the Paeroa turn off, the roads were dry and when we got into Paeroa, the track was in use by RACE BIKES, had a ball, tootled around the back ( river side) of the course on steep slooped grass until we crested a brow and found ourselves on a footpath overlooking some of the pits and some interesting parts of the track.,.
Packed our gear onboard the bikes and buggered off, those side car guys are crazy, No I mean CRAZY, they raced well and provided some very intense racing.
Them thar Motard thingamujigs are an amzing piece of engineering, I didn't know you could ride a motorcycle backwards into a corner then do a complete 180 degree turn and barrel straight out as the straight appeared, butt ya know's wot, ya can I've seen it!
The RSA provided a brilliant pork roll and chips lunch for a very good and affordable $8.00 and being able to sit in their blissfully cool place and watch some very fast cornering by those Very fast Big Bikes was tremendous.lt has
Taken me 15 years to get to Pareoa street races, going again next year, thats for certain.
Only draw back, I could not buy a Track Shirt, nor could any of the people I know or travelled down with, reason"The track sellers only took sizes S to 2XL, nothing bigger, damn and bugger it!
Ya can online though, so, am doing that next, great day, awesome racing, fantastic weather (Ha, serves you right if you whimped out and stayed home) bloody funny ride home, got overtaken by some Rossi's and a car driving one in a Mercedes AMG 533 SUV who was trying to race an old BMWér.

Awesome post,

I managed to watch a bit of the days racing through the live coverage available on Face book, sadly I missed the Classic Sidecars but managed to see the last race with the Moderns. Hoody had a big smile when we met at the servo as he left for Paeroa and appeared to be very pleased with how his Norton (#850) had been running.

The biker turnout was the lowest I have ever seen at Paeroa. Only about a dozen bikes at the rugby club when we arrived.
On the ride there, we saw bikers turning back frequently, as the rain took hold.
However as the man said, dry day at Paeroa and eventually hot and sunny, with some great racing, especially in F2. Some spectacular offs but best of all, so far as I know, everyone got up and walked away.

Stripped all the teeth off the primary belt. They had alignment problems in practice and adjusted it for the first race. Crank seal was leaking on Marks (swingers) engine which was the one they were using on Sunday (after a blow up on the Maney engine a fortnight earlier at the Festival,) and the oil got on the belt probably contributing to the tearing the teeth off it.

Lucky that shit is cheap.

We waited until they made the decision to race and came down by car. Very easy to find a park. No problems getting beers, food or good viewing! Some good racing and the cloud kept the temperature down.

Hopefully they still made a profit. I'd hate to see it die.

A great day with some great racing but numbers were way down. It is doubtful whether they recouped the cost after chatting to a senior committee member who mentioned what it cost to put the event on.

We've been attending every year for years now and I reckon they'll be having a serious debrief and discussion about its future.

Who in the right minds pre-pays to go to a motorcycle race meeting? I mean .. come on .. there's always a chance it will rain . any day any timer

Who said anything about pre-paying--We paid at the entry gates as we always do,only to have the cancelation announced 15 minutes later.

No chance bro ...

Anyway - 'twas a great day out
