View Full Version : What is the realistic minimum number of motorbikes you need?

I reckon its five:

Road bike
Trackday bike
Adv bike or offroader
Cruiser
Project/classic something to play with in the shed

Given I've only funded one at a time, I guess I only 'need' one.

How many do I want - now that is a totally different question

Darn, now I want a project bike.

You're not even trying...
Road bikes - a tourer and something to pop down to the shops on..maybe something for Vintage runs too...
trackday bike - hell no. Classic and post classic racebikes - and possibly a bucket too.
Adv bike or offroader - come on, a twinshock trials bike plus a modern trialler plus possibly a VMX...
Cruiser - shit no....
Project - keeping the above running will do thanks....

I decided a while back that I'm going to try & abstain from selling motorcycles for the rest of my days. I'm still well open to the idea of buying motorcycles. I need an adventure bike and a Harley Davidson in the short-term, along with a small boat.

More than one, because it's nice having variety, but I have no desire to have a track anything, and a cruiser even less so. Projects and classics... nope.

CB919 for commuting and around town, it's excellent and incredibly reliable. Love my GSA for country, events, adv riding and it's brilliant. So much so I might even have to get a second as the first is getting needy on parts and likes visiting the mech :sweatdrop

Or N+1, where N is the number for which you have money to acquire and space to store.

R1200RT Tourer/Road Bike
R1 Sports Bike
Ducati Multistrada for the more adventurous tours/gravel roads etc
Commuter Bike (Maybe KTM390 Duke or similar, depends on how far you are commuting)
KTM300EXC Trail/Dirt Bike
Some sort of track bike early 90s 400 RR or similar or a bucket racer. This doubles as the project bike

The realistic number of bikes is dictated by the floor space of the shed. The maximum number is reached when you have to breathe in to get past the bikes without bending a mirror. Once the main shed is full, the tool shed offers space for one or two trials bikes. They have to be trials bikes as they are the only things with enough lock to get through a standard size door.
Similarly, verandas offer adequate storage but access to the washing line is paramount. A potential domestic flash point and mirror risk.
With the main shed, tool shed and veranda full you can start looking at the access potential of the main residence. French doors and ranch sliders offer unlimited scope of entry. Then you need to think about suitable floor coverings and whether a bike in the living room will obscure your view of the MotoGP coverage. Another domestic flash point in the making if the paddock stand causes a trip hazard.

I recently found out that it pays to keep a close eye on Versatile kit set garage specials. You can get a lot of shed for not a lot of money sometimes.

...this has been my problem/philosophy for the last twenty years. I built a big shed, 200sq meters, gave about quarter of it to my wife for her business, the rest being for me to retire to home to turn wood into money so I didn't have to slave for other cunts on building sites...I never did manage to get off my work sites and the shed became a tightly packed motorcycle storage system with me spending more time moving bikes about so I could make space to actually work on wood. I built an extension 'worksop for wood related shit...it became the bike workshop with the flloor area covered in bikes for repair...I built another lean to, twenty years ago, this was to shelter up to five or so chord of firewood...it eventually was full of bikes...I gave up shifting shit recently and gave into the notion that my sheds were now dedicated bike space/ storage/garaging/museum...I built a 16meter long by 5.5 meter lean to off my big shed to store timber and work on...guess what...I just noticed the other day that there were bike parts and project stuff creeping in there too...passion, sickness, love...I am going to get rid of a lot of bike related shit and some bikes very soon, I promise myself this annually...most bikes I own actually run which is not bad for a busy cunt like me that really doesn't have any spare time for owning even one bike, let alone spend most of my life riding and racing them...I reckon three or four bikes is too many but not quite enough...

Peter Egan wrote an article about this, long time since I read it but I should have it here. He at various times had largish collections and was coming at the question from the other end, what is the ideal number before you have too many. From memory he decided on five. It's raining, I may see if I can find the article after lunch.

I've heard of this type of thing before, don't despair, there is a way out of it.

Firstly, get her to actually list reasons why you can't have another motorbike. NB: It can get a bit tricky and they do try things like the hackneyed "happy wife happy life" maxim, but it's easily countered. Keep us posted.

I'm actually already resigned to this . The maxim "happy wife , happy life" certainly rings true . Current bike is for sale at the moment, and she's given her blessing to me buying new or very near new for the upgrade. No point pushing my luck - small gains [emoji12]

That wasn't hard, the article "How Many Bikes Do You Really Need?" appeared in the March '97 issue of Cycle World, in case any of you have the complete CW collection.

His answer, after much serious discussion with friends over generous quantities of tequila, was five:
Sportsbike
Sport Tourer
Dirt bike
A great big hog of some kind ("not necessarily Harley" but his was, at the time, a Road King).
An old crock of some sort, be it a Vincent or an early Honda or ? A project bike.

He wrote that more than five and the riding time on each is spread too thin and it's hard to keep up with insurance, batteries and oil changes. OK, smart chargers are common now but we have WoFs and Rego. He wasn't concerned about space so much as IIRC he had a purpose built building for bikes and his band.

His five seems about right, in which case I can have four more? Better buy a Lotto ticket.

I agree - if my subscription was not so cheap and I had to pay NZ retail I reckon I'd flick through them in the shop and probably only purchase five or so a year.

And I swear they are getting thinner and thinner. I'm inclined to e-mail them and tell them to reintroduce American Flyers.

You can kill two birds with one stone by buying the Harley Davidson. Then you'll have your very own cruiser and boat all in one.

I would say 2 bikes. One for commuting and touring like a f650gs and the other totally impractical but very fast like an rs250.

I'd be happy with those two in my garage.

Close enough to HDC's selection.

For me, I don't have the history or much interest in track racing or proper sprots bikes. So the SDR does me just fine as a general weekend hooligan option.

And it's a good enough touring option that I can't see any point in a separate sprots/tourier.

I has the 525 for dirt stuff, and I can't imagine anything more suitable, but then I'm not using it much. So much as I like it, if the idea of a wish list presupposes that you're going to use them it's probably on borrowed time.

I can't think of anything less enjoyable to ride on or off road than any machine I've ever seen designed to do both. "Aventure" isn't a motorcycle sub-category, it's a motorcycle super-category. Although now that I come to think about it perhaps there's a valid definition lurking somewhere in the use of something completely inappropriate...

I'd like a trials machine, old or new, more for a mobile excercycle than any pretense of actual competition trials.

And then, of course, once the trials bike has made me all fit and bounce-proof again I might actually use a VMX of some old 4T type.

So I guess the list changes occasionally, no?

I got a trials bike a couple of years ago. Now I feel a lot more confident on my 93 CRM. I break it rather than it breaking me.

My wee journey inspired my mate to get a trials bike, too. Now his PE 400 X is almost ready to ride again. The new reeds just arrived last week and he's looking for a torque wrench. You're very prescient.

Speaking of the old ball and chain earlier in the thread...... The next bike in the shed will be for the missus. She has gained her full licence on a 2t, I think it's time for something with more cylinders and more strokes. MT09 maybe. I'm sure she would like it.<_<

Which reminds me. Apparently there is TDR 250 in bits down the road to be had for a song..... Yeah, the list changes. Like the weather.

I always find it amusing (that's the nicest word I could come up with, others came to mind) when 250cc motorcycle owners attempt to make fun of Harley Davidsons. Me? I've never ridden one, but I've been in situations where I've struggled to keep up with a Harley being ridden by a bloke who would never diss a 250cc motorcycle simply for the sake of flexing his cock.

I was just taking the piss. Not actually serious. Only thing I don't like about Harley Davidson is that they are usually really loud. I have ridden a 650 Boulevard single cylinder before and I actually liked it. Lots of torque compared to the nugget 250's I've owned. Burnt my leg though on the exhaust.

Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion and I'm not going to suggest than anyone take KB seriously. Take a moment to consider though that jumping on the "take the piss out of Harley Davidson" bandwagon has the potential to make one look like a twat in the eyes of some. It's a bit like not all Honda riders are homos, it's only something like 89%.

Unless a bike is being overly-optimistically listed for sale I reckon let the beauty of the bike be in the beholder. Except Bimota Mantra's, they're gay as fuck and should be killed with fire.

When a woman starts a sentence with "You can't...", then you fire her, and get on top of the next one. As a result, I have four bikes, two here (CBX1000 and a little Hayabusa) and two in a city, far, far away from here. Given that I've also spent this summer (what fucking summer?) selling most of my muscle cars here, soon I will have a couple (several) more bikes in said far away city. Because you need a street bike (which has to be a GSXR obviously) and a track bike, and a spare track bike for when the first track bike gets binned, and a naked. And a touring bike. I know this for a fact, it's written in the Human Bill of Rights Act, right between the section on marriage being a cruel and unusual punishment, and the section where it says it's acceptable to piss on Axzle from a great height.

LOL - No such thing!

My ST1300 is good for sealed roads - got me from the Waikato to Invercargill for the Burt Munro rally, I ran up over 4,000kms in a couple of weeks.
My DR650 is good for sealed roads & gravel roads and also handles a bit of 'bush bashing'.
I'd like a bigger adventure bike like the Africa Twin to handle other than sealed roads while still having enough luggage capacity to run big trips.
For something different - a Zero Motorcycles DSR 13kWh bike for short range commuting.
Maybe something a bit more off-road capable than the DR650 for the tougher trails.

Correct answer is "one". You can only ride one at a time.
But if it's off the road, then a replacement would be needed...:msn-wink:

There's no such thing as too many.
The question was "minimum", not "too many"!

I think you have reached motorcycling nirvana ( the state not the band) when you are happy with a sweet phat magna.
And a nice warm goat for those cold, cold nights...

That guy is seriously not right in the head. Did you see his press conference? The ramblings of a lunatic. It was always clear he was a sociopathic narcissist, but now it looks even worse... Delusional.
America gets the president it deserves. Just look at the last two idiots they chose. Mr Bland and Mr Tooretardedtoeventiehisownshoelaces.

Too many is when you cant get access to the one you want to use because off lack of access.

Number restriction set by available storage space which is related to willingness to gain more storage space.

My wife told me when I got the second that there would never be a third bike.

Install towbar and get trailer under the need ability to finish renovation. Then introduce track bike.

Now my wife has introduced "There will never be a Forth bike".
Its like some sort of challenge that she has put before me.

Im thinking Motard would be ok and now I have bike trailer perhaps a trail bike also.

I've been riding this all week since taking it to a Vintage Motorcycle Rally last weekend.
I've got other far cooler bikes but this one is the best all rounder.
It would be perfect if it had a Guzzi 850 motor but then would be too heavy.
Probably classified as a sort of street scrambler.
Quite custom here in AK as the plate is on normally, seat is black and no exhaust wrap

I get the spray on dirt from Amazon.
