View Full Version : Triumph off road pipes (TOR) WOF legal?
Hey all. First poster here.
I am moving back to NZ early next year after a lengthy time over here in the UK. I have a 2009 Triumph Thruxton with a few mods but the one 'mod' that concerns me the most on getting a WOF in NZ is the (factory stamped 'For off road use only') Triumph TOR pipes.
Has anybody had any experience getting a WOF with these particular pipes? It flies through an MOT over here but I'm assuming in NZ I might get some grief.
I'm not keen on welding a patch over the stamp and unfortunately I don't have the standard pipes to slip these back on.

It will only be an issue if they are annoyingly loud.

I've never heard of a motorcycle failing a WOF with off the shelf pipes like those in NZ. Make sure you get your WOF at a bike shop, not a VTNZ or some other useless officious organisation.

Apparently ... only a low volume vehicle certifier can carry out an objective noise test. The test costs around $200 and involves a stationary tail pipe test based on international standards.
The legal noise limit for a motorcycle or trike with an engine capacity of more than 125cc ... 100 decibels.
At worst ... you might have to "borrow" a muffler/exhaust for the test.

Or take it to a local Triumph dealer for a wof. They sell the pipes so they will not fail them.

Why would Triumph put for of road use only on these pipes for a road bike?
Because they fail those international noise standards ...?
Are they loud?

My 06 scrambler has had them from new.
No WOF issue in that time.:msn-wink:

Likewise with our 09 Bonneville SE. Sound nice and certainly not silly loud.

Good to know, thank you.

Again, thanks for the reply, good to know.

They definitely have a throaty sound but its not excessive.
I have no idea why they stamp these pipes like this. A pain in the ar#e for owners if anything. I can't imagine they give any more performance than the stock pipes.

Yep. I'll definitely be doing this. The NZTA website says I must use an approved testing station, which is obvious but I hope this doesn't exclude a local bike shop.
I noticed that you're in Tauranga - which is where the bike will be landing most likely. Can you recommend a shop?

I have a set of factory pipes off a 2012 Touring model if you really get stuck. Mine had Jardines fitted when I bought it, no issues with WOF. Original pipes came in a box.
