View Full Version : MotoGP $100 betting challenge 2017

This challenge is for bragging rights to see who can use their knowledge to gain financially from this years MotoGP season, the winner will be the person who has gained the most or lost the least from their initial $100 buy in. I might be able to drum up a box or bottle for the winner at the end of the season providing my venture into self employment does not leave me bankrupt.

Basically how it works is each participant will open a TAB account with $100 at the beginning of the season. You do not need to reveal your bets before the race weekend if you don't want to but it will make for interesting debates I'm sure.

Periodically if you could update the thread with your account balance and I'll keep a leaders board going on below this post to track who is doing the best.

Side bets are welcome in the usual form of alcohol delivered humbly to the winner, I can keep track of these also if you wish.

Anyone with some suggestions on how to improve this let me know.

LET THE GAME BEGIN

Can I swap out beer for KFC?

I'll also chip in $10 to the winner's choice of beer/ chicken.

Throw me in

Dovi for race 1 (8 to 1)

Pity I cant bet on Lowes crashing out...

PS: Coral Sport betting in the UK have Dovi at 5 to 1 and Lorenzo at 6 to 1

Yeah bit silly of them considering he's been mere seconds off winning the past 3 years. I've gone for a weighted approach betting a few bucks on a few of the guys I think likely to win

It would make more sense to wait until a few races in before throwing money around, but I feel that would be against the spirit of this wager.

It will be interesting to see how the odds change as practice and qualifying take place. As you may have noticed, I am a total novice at this betting thing.

9 different winners in 10 races last season, or some such. :psst: I'm putting names in a hat and watching the weather.
I'm the worlds worst gambler, if I just pick a winner they win. The moment I place a stake they get struck by lightning or contract Ebola.

Yep total novice too. Never gambled in my life since I lost $20 on a Timezone machine when I was in high school.

Seems outright championship winner TAB closes on 26th and Qatar GP bet finishes just before it starts (tomorrow 4am?).

All of this is just for giggles. Plus, like share markets, your decision is only based on information given at that time so nothing to bash about when you find yourself bet on the wrong horse the next day. That's the fun of it I guess? :sunny:

$10 on Rossi Qatar FTW

I'm hopeful for either Marquez or Rossi this weekend, unless Pedrosa does some awesome riding with soft tyres.

Lorenzo... Well he's a bit of a wildcard and hasn't proven anything on Ducati just yet. So not betting on him.

Dadpole

Why can't we have a more flexible betting system. I would put money on Bautista finishing the season inside the top 10.

Brilliant. I have an anchor here (A real anchor - for a boat - not a Harley/Guzzi/BSA) that I will chuck on Tardme. That will mollify the wife when Tito Rabat beats my pick over the finish line every time.

That hardly seems fair to the buyer. I've got no less than three GN250 wheels at the workshop they could have had for free.

They guy turned up, looked at it, I said how much you wanna pay, he goes $100, I go yeah! I was a decent sort though and chucked him the matching front wheel as he left cause I wanted it gone lol.

He building a dope custom Honda CT50 and is going to used the rear wheel from the GN for the front of the moped and another rear on the back, showed me a pic it's a cool looking beast.

That is the sensible option. Qatar and Argieland are a bit of a lottery. Unless Marquez every bone he possesses, he should be favourite for COTA.

$98.40

Bet $2 on
JL
AD
DP
and hedged on
MV @ 3.20 to cover if the others did not perform. So basically ended up back at $100, not sure if it's smart betting but it did the job :D
AD was paying $8 so I nearly made some good coin on that.

My actual account ballance is $101.40 as I put in extra to cover a credit card fee which they never charged... So if it comes close at the end we will minus $3 off to work out the winner.

I'm not planning on betting big until I reach the rounds with clear favourites.

That was a good educated bet mate. I honestly thought Dovi had the pace over race distance in the conditions but Maverick was just a bit too cool to beat.

I think Rossi would be worth a small bet at Argie just going off previous form there.
Wouldn't be surprised to see an Aprilia on the podium if the grip is as low as in previous years. No way to know just yet though of course.

Can I play poker with you some time? Sounds like you might not understand how to minimise risk.

Poke who? Texas holdem or GTFO.

According to Drew the best way to minimise risk is to wear a rubber whilst fucking your neighbors wife.

I've done ok so far, I'm the only one to actually get paid out on a bet with MV in Qatar, I just lost out by putting too high wildcards on the ones I lost, in future I'll only be putting $1 on the riders I think have an outside chance, it would only take getting it right once to race ahead.
I'll bet big once I'm more sure but putting $1 on CC and $1 on JM was hardly a big risk with the weather forecast?

Dadpole
11th April 2017, 13:38
Looks like a fairly sound strategy. If it is anything like last year, then the outsiders would provide the best returns.

I am toying with a system of putting rider photos out on sticks and seeing which one the magpies attack first.

I'm hoping the bookies will give good odds on MV next race counting on MM's record there, will definitely be worth chucking a tenner on him and $3+

Autech
20th April 2017, 13:58
So TAB is up and MM is up for $3 for the win, MV at 1.70.
Can't see there ever being better odds than that even though I suspect MV will win, definitely worth getting in early if you are betting on MM.
AD is paying quite well too but I think the corner combination might be a bit too much for the Duc in its current state.

OK I've made a few small bets on my fav riders. Biggest bet goes to MM.

Dadpole
21st April 2017, 14:51
MM paying $3 is worth a 10 spot for me. I think those are quite generous odds.

Ladbrokes in the UK are:
M Marquez 6/5
M Vinales 7/4
V Rossi 9/2
A Dovizioso 14/1

Lorenzo at $31 may get a 5 if he shows promise during free practice:devil2:

Dadpole

True. Each year is starting afresh so to speak, so last year is just history.

Marquez (to me) looked good in the previous two races and needs to stop the rot before the point difference gets much higher. I think he can do it this weekend.

He's fast and steady like Lorenzo's best days. He seems a reliable bet. As long as he doesn't crash out (like Argentina) he's got a good chance of winning I think.

So Dadpole takes the lead, nice work mate!

I'm still playing it cautiously hoping for a small bet big pay out punt. Will start betting larger soon. I'm doing a lot of my betting early in the week going off current form, weather forecasts and previous results as my bench mark. Will start betting larger bets during the race weekend as we go on though I think.

Probably the best method this early in the season. I think that large bets on an almost dead cert will be the way to go. You get a low payout but a lower chance of waving goodbye to your wager.

IF I have anything left at Austria, I would probably throw a large slice on a Ducati. (But which one?:msn-wink:)

Nice work Crash. That's one way to earn a few dollas! Wish I'd grown a pair and laid 100 on MM for the win. I'd have made a nice $200 rather than the $10 that I did.
Only other race that might be as certain is one of the Doocaits at the Red Bull ring. AD most likely.

As for Drew laying it all on MM at PI, lets not forget he got his ass whooped by a satellite Honda in the dry there last year.

Cheers. It's unusual. I normally just donate money to their slush fund. But this season has been the easiest one to predict since Stoner blew them all away in 2007. That was money in the bank most rounds. MM was blowing them away at PI till he threw it away mate. He'll blow them into the weeds this year. :msn-wink:

Also had chucked couple of gold coins on CC and Zarco. Shoulda put in my piggy bank instead.

DP champion 2017. MM his bitch in every race just CS was his bitch in 250's.

In all seriousness though I have absolutely no hunches to go off for the Le Mans, with the new surface, JL doing ok, MV and VR struggling and a few decent straights we should see some interesting podium contenders I think.
MM is bloody strong braking into that fast right left at the beginning of the track but if the tyre isn't hard enough he might just cook it. Another exciting race to look forward to I think. Might be my turn to do a Drew.

Yeah he's quick but I honestly think CC, JM, or both the asparagus brothers would be doing just as well on that 2016 spec Yam bike.
Even JZs humble enough to admit the bike is giving him the goods to perform and he needs to do it justice, which yesterday he sure did. He might just win one this year though, though where that might be I'm not sure as the momentum will start to shift the factory bikes way as the year develops. Yamaha need to jump in quick n secure him with some go faster bits so he keeps them in mind come 2019.

VR is in "Severe pain" right now. If he does make it on the grid I'm not sure he'll be able to podium which leaves one spot for:
DP, AD, JL, CC and JZ to fight over.

Better off putting the bets down now IMO and letting the fates decide. If you wait too long you have to risk more to get the same result...
Looking back over the years JL has a brilliant record there, MM has had mixed results with a few DNFs, Mugello is a track where the front is pushed very hard and we all know what happens when MM cooks his front...

The way I look at this is that, not being a betting type, I have $100 for the season. My goal is to have at least that at the end. $110 would be a 10% return which is more than any poxy bank would give.

Put $100 in your bottom drawer and get it out after the last race if that is your attitude. Your $10 profit over a season is a single decent beer, or a 12 pack of Speights, you are missing the whole point of gambling. The going from $2 left in the account to being up $800 due to some ginger wizard, and then the next round being down to $20 due to some Spanish twat. And then $5,000 in credit the week after due to a bit of rain and some mouthy Australian. Who then falls off on the last lap putting you back down to coinage only. I'll be drawing out $295 leaving $100 at the end of this week so me n dadpole can keep at it for a bit to see who's got what it takes to be the next pokemon master.

Absolutely :-)

Just keep me updated with all yous balance and I'll update them as season goes.

What was his buy in amount? EJK could use his smarts and scale it appropriately

Crasher's buy-in was $100 I think. He went all in on Mav and MM both winning big, or something IIRC.

Can you do no wrong there Crasher? You are the exact opposite of me.

Last race I put:

10 to win on Marquez before FP1. He bimbles around for 6th place
10 for podium on Pedrosa. He bimbles around mid-field until he rams Crutchlow amidships then has a lie-down in the gravel.
2 for a speculative podium on Folger. He has been a consistent performer this season until the curse. He was in last place a couple of laps in and has his worst placing of the year.
2 for another speculative podium on A Espargaro. He too has been fast - if erratic. This time, he has a jump start and ride through, a trip through the gravel and finally retired when his pit board told him that Dadpole had put money on him.

Who shall I pick for this weekend???????? :eek5:

Yup that's my picking. We have similar thoughts on who to bet on you and I, wonder if that's why we're in the black?

Apparently the grip is down at the track so I'm thinking more of a Honda win, but the track is bumpy which might throw a spanner in the works. Which Honda is anyones guess.

Good odds on JL for a podium at the mo. Considering the last track he had tested at was Jerez and he did well there I think it's work a fling early on before his practice pace throws it down lower.

MV may be, but if the grip is as low as they think at the track the Honda will excel as it has no grip to lose.

There's one rider that is standing out above all the the mo, provided he stays uninjured and in the top 3 in every race he'll be able to carry his lead through from here as the others will trade wins and positions in the top 3 quite regularly. I remain hopeful for Dani as always

His statistics are pretty fucking good, as well as the riders he beat out to win the moto3 title. Rins, Marquez, Salom... Would have def won a moto2 title if he'd stuck around long enough, if Zarco had let him that is.

MM is fastest but looks very unstable. The Yamaha duo are all at sea and looking like another weekend in mid-field.

The forecast is for dry and very hot. Some (me included) might call it Pedrosa weather. I put 10 on him and a couple on Bautista. I hope I have not nobbled young Alvaro as I think he is capable of being a regular at the sharper end of the field.

$30 @ 9 on Dani for the win
$5 @ 5 on Lorenzo for top 3

$10 @ 9 on Dani for the win
$4 @ 5 on Lorenzo for top 3
$10 @ $3,50 on Rossi for top 3
$2 @ $21 on Bautista top 3

I think we get some sort of award for having 2 picks in the top 4 and getting nothing.

I was betting on Dani's past form and my love of the rider. Seems like he had the pace in FP but couldn't stay in the 21s with Jonas and MM. Still hedged on him making the podium so only lost $10 for my efforts which was the figure I put on CC for a podium.
