2 year old galaxy s5. I paid $500. I can't justify more than $500. My s5 is plenty fast enough, if happily replace it with another s5 if this one dies.

No tablet as I don't have a need for one, but otherwise, same here. They're tools in my job, company mobile, mobile plan, laptop and other equipment.

I have a Galaxy S2(?) cost $200.00 as I recall. After I'd had it a week I wanted to throw it at the wall, still do periodically.
On its own that info is a bit misleading. 'Cause I have two iPads and three iPods of various vintages, you'da thunk I'd have bought an iPhone, and I would have but I didn't want a plan, just prepay.
Another reason I didn't want an expensive phone was that the last two went through the washing machine.

Also had one for over 4 years. Those things are Samsung failures. Why? Because they were indestructible.
Samsung customers weren't upgrading to newer phones because S2 would just keep on going. It fell out of my pocket at 50kph, dropped, thrown at, drowned in coffee etc... And it didn't crack the screen. Brilliant phone. But apps and Android OS eventually became too demanding for S2's hardware.

Got an iPhone from work (on to my third one in 15 months). If I were to need to buy my own phone I would find it very difficult to fork out $1200+, I'd probably get an old iphone second hand for $600 max.

I buy second hand and keep a few years. Paid 350 for a under 12 month old xperia z5 compact last year. Waterproof and good size for bike jackets :-)
Akzle
12th April 2017, 14:29
My first phone was a Motorola flip phone that I only did away with due to the pins on the charger plug coming lose. I then bought a Samsung S3 mini which I still use and it was a bit over $300 I think. When I do update it I will get a phone of about the same price. I would never spend $1400 or higher on a phone but have bought an Ipad pro mini that was about $1,250
so... no pressure to keep up with technology eh. fascinating.

I'm on a company iphone and laptop but soon will be starting my own business so will need to buy my first phone in 6 years or so. Went to the mall the other day and nearly cried at the fact the base iphones and Samsungs are now 1200 rather than the 1k I was expecting.
Massive piss take as I know the little Chinese boy that puts them together would barely see 10cents of that.
Any suggestions on a good place to buy?

Pretty much all shops sell them for the same price. Even if you buy it in 'merica you're only gonna save 1 or 2 hundred. Vodafone, Spark, 2Degrees offer them interest free with a 24month contract which works out alright.

Nothing to brag about but im amazed at how many OTHER people are obsessed with what you have.
My phone cost a few dollars but its formeostly a mobile web and map browser to me, the phone function is secondary importance and have it on prepay plan.

But hey oits ok to blow $100s a week on smokes or poiss your savings away against a wall.....

Indeed. Even the S3 was a pretty good brick. I have an S4 that's been dropped a lot, but its in a Otterbox as I was expecting that (basically said to my boss it has to have a case). Supporting a client with S7s... fucken things just lose information from the exchange mailbox when they feel like it. Remove the account and re-add, everything is back. I definitely feel as they get more complicated more issues creep in and reliability heads south.
I still like removable batteries (S4 is on it's 3rd), so I wouldn't mind an LG V20...

I had a Bold 9000 and Bold 9750 from memory, coupled with BES they were awesome. Still have a soft spot for the Berries and the practical keyboards. As business tools they were brilliant, but the app support for Android is hard to beat. Wifi Analysers, Network Tools, apps for setting up / controlling hardware etc. Even have an app for dumping my calls to my calendar for invoicing purposes.

decoupled from BES they were better.
New ones (OS10, the z10, 30, q5, 10, 20, passport) have some kind of andriod implementation. mostly works by all accounts.
they also have a full c lib and python implementation, meaning you can run your ass a web server in your pocket or do.... well, fucken anything.

Nexus 5 for me, it has the hardware config I wanted (NFC, Wireless charging and a good size), at a price I could easily afford. Not tempted by any of the new offerings, it's a massive credit to cellphone marketers worldwide that they manage to keep consumer turnover of phones so high tbh.

yet fucken week on week there's a new feature you, like, tots gotta have cos you can pxt to facebook 4ms faster than EVAR BEFORE!!

(and still have 3 bars of battery) anyone remember having to hit 7 four times for an "s"? :bleh:

Managed to score all my iPhones from work, I would find it hard to justify spending four figures on a phone, although I do have my entire life organised on it and its generally my go to device over latops and iPad. I still have a few older iphones - still going strong - one has a backup of my current phone exactly as it is just in case. I´ve never had a device last as long as my iPad or iPhone. So purchase price divided by productive years of use, minus frustration of migrating to a new OS = not so expensive after all. I hardly ever make voice calls, usually whats app voice messages, texts or email.

Iphone 6s. Any bigger and it would be a nuisance to use with one hand. I attract too much attention already using only one arm for everything (with my paralysed arm I mostly keep my hand in my pocket so it looks like I'm being casual/lazy/etc) so using a gadget would just draw more attention.

Iphones are all designed to be held in the hand and used with the thumb, only old farts hold them in one hand and use their other hand to type.

When I'm an old fart I'll have a chip in my head which reads my thoughts and can use that to text, google maps etc. Either that or I'll be in a cave after the nuclear war Trumps about to start with Kim Jong sends us back to the stone age.

i was having an discussion the day other with some nerdy cunts about how qwerty is irrelevant because we don't use typewriters anymore, (even having keys laid out in a running bond isn't optimal), and it is stupid enough to keep making keyboards thus, but now that all niggaz by typing with their thumbs it's a real "lolwut?" why the fuck you'd have qwerty vkb on a fucken phone is beyond me entirely.
anyway, the point of that awesome story was that some cunt has dev'd left and right single-handed /single-thumbed keyboards for some touchscreen devices. cant remember which phones/os/app. probably in dvorak.

Leaving aside the criminal component 'cause I don't know what you are referring to; the tax evasion thing is not all it appears. The NZ media love to misreport that because it gives them a story. A crap story but a story. If you do business in mutiple countries it's not normal pay full tax in every country. You pay tax on your earnings at home and probably a withholding tax in any other countries.
Exporters will know the full story but the papers don't, and nor do some politicians.
iPhones are pretty universal now, even Govt Departments hand them out to staff. They probably pay a very different price to what we would pay though.

Yup. My compter-fixer mate laughs each time he enters a certain supplier.
Recons that he is greeted and his feet kissed by the manager each and every time he is there. "Can you give me a price for 25 ipads and 50 iphones please?" and watches the salesman's eyes bulge out...
