View Full Version : A question from my son

We all know that Dads know everything - yeah right.

Joshua asked a question I could not answer.

"Are there any bikes that have a hazard light switch like the one you find in a car?"

My guess was that maybe BMW or Harley - but I said I'd put it to the experts...

Yup, my 98 TDM 850 Yammie has hazards. Used them yesterday when I came around a corner to find a herd of horses. Had no effect on them whatsoever.

My Yamaha XSR700 has that switch as well. Given that it shares DNA with MT-07 and Tracer, they probably have them too.

BMWs with paddle indicators, press both to activate hazards. Newer non-paddles are a separate switch I think.
CB919 has a slide toggle on the right control block for hazards.

Because of the event work I often do, I wouldn't buy a bike without hazards now.

My 1985 BMW K100 RS had them. Now here's the interesting thing.... I'm given to understand that BMW had the wiring loom set up for hazard lights but never got round to installing an actual switch! Mine had one when I bought it second hand in 1993 which I assumed was standard. Apparently not, given what I've since read so assume the original owner fitted one. Why BMW left it off is a mystery. Anyone know the reason?

i am pretty sure my 86 or so k100 rs had a hazard switch as well as being able to hold both "paddles " to activate both sides

Both my 2004 Honda NT650's [Honda Deauville] have a right handle bar separate switch to activate the hazard lights - won't work with the key off;

and the 2011 F650GS BMW [actually the 800cc water cooled twin] has hazards if you push both indicator switches together.

My Tiger has them, and they are most useful for lanesplitting, in conjunction with high beam and fog lights.

But the damn switch is on the dash instead of the handlebars...

Like CasperNZ, my GSXR1300 has a hazard switch.

And it's FUCKING annoying. Sorry for shouting.

I'm getting used to using the indicator switch again, it's weird, normally pointing to the other guys on the track is enough. Sometimes a pointed boot will do. But on the street, you've got to use a stupid button in case we shock the idle minded psychotics we share the road with.

But, the hazard is easy to accidentally hit instead of the inda-mackaters.

So, I look like a tool driving down the road, blissfully unaware that cancel actually equals the park anywheres... It is the only bad thing about the bike. Aside from the need of another 175 horsepower and 70 kg's less of weight. Then I'd marry it.

Really enjoying mine. Very nice in traffic and will pootle along nicely on the open road. Bit of a gentleman's bike with the upright riding position and de-tuned engine for torque lower down but I'm an aging gentleman so it suits me down to the ground.

IIRC my 1981 R65 had a blanking piece in the moulded cover around the ignition switch & clocks, and the switch was a plug-in extra.

At the same time, the R100RT had them as standard while they were an at-cost extra on the R80RT - as the saying went: its tòugh to justify a higher price for the 'bigger' bike when all you get is bigger holes in the engine :)

An interesting question, so I quickly surveyed a couple of my riding friends to
advise as well.

2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000 - Yes
2014 KTM 1190 Adventure - No (or he can't find it) --> Amend that: It's a Yes (he found it; don't ask)
2008 Honda VFR800 - No (and I had to go and check) --> Amend that: It's also a Yes (pointed out by
another VFR rider - that's embarrassing)

Our V-Strom friend did advise that being H&S focused, it was one of the features
paramount on his shopping list when he bought the machine. Yeh, right.

I found a poor quality photo of my old K100RS and zooming in, it looks like it had a flasher switch and two blanking plates for other switches. I know a UK-based friend who had one had 3 blanking plates so perhaps which market they were destined for also has a bearing. SuperMac's point about models is also valid. I'm picking that the K100 RT had the lot as standard. I've still got a lot of affection for my RS - great performance and reliability from a bike over 3 decades old!

TTR250 & XT660R both have them..
The funny thing with the XT.. the button is on the
front of the switch block.. if the block it angled slightly
up the clutch lever hits it when pulled....
I had half the dam bike apart trying find a short in the wireing
till I found it....
high beam stoped flashing ever time I pulled the clutch...

Gremlin,
You are absolutely correct. He looked in his manual, and then realised "ah ha, so that is
what that button is for". And caught some friendly feedback from us as a consequence.

Though he's not the only one. Another VFR rider contacted me this morning to say that
his 07 model VFR has a switch, between the Kill Switch and the Starter button. So I went
out to the garage to have another look. And Yes, there is a tiny black switch on the right
hand switch block in exactly the position described, with a tiny little white triangle.

B@#$%&*, that's embarrassing.

Guess I'll get some feedback as well. Sorry, have to go - Incoming ...

Although you are only supposed to use your right hand indicator when passing between vehicles (lane filtering - and only to the left of the white lane marker and the right hand side of the vehicle in the lane) I always use my hazard lights because I consider I'm a hazard that other vehicles should be aware of.

Prior to 2010, the R1200RT had switches for the indicators on both bars. Left for turning left, right for turning right. It seems sensible.

There was a separate switch for cancelling the indicators.

If you pressed both indicator switches at the same time the hazards came on. And they were cancelled by the indicator cancel switch. It was really intuitive, and once you got used to it, a breeze to use.

In 2010 they went to the world standard. My 2013 RT has the world standard (both indicator switches on the the left bar, and press to cancel).

There is a separate button to activate hazards, on and off. It's red, which seems to be the world standard colour.

The first dual switch one I had was an R1150GS. Cool bike. I had ridden a few company K100s and R1150RTs prior, so the indicators were intuitive.

When I got my 2009 RT, it was all good. The first few weeks I had my R1200RT 2014 I was totally screwed, having to go back to the world standard.

I rode a Harley Street Glide recently. It took me a while to get used to the HD system. The self cancel is better then the BMW self cancel, easier to adapt to. But I still dont trust self cancels.
