Hey guys,
So I've finally received the new engine for the 01 R6, it came all the way from Canada.
Now we've already encountered a problem, I took out the spark plugs and there is oil around the electrode. There's a little bit on 1 and 2 and it's swimming in oil on 3 and 4.
My guess is buggered rings?
Sounds silly but the engine was shipped upside down, would this have anything to do with it?
We haven't started it yet so not sure how it'l go.
The engine has 40,000km.
Cheers

If it was shipped upside down then any oil left in it would have run up to the cylinders and may have seeped past the rings. Get a leakdown test done on it to test condition of rings etc

May have happened during transit but more likely the previous owner put a little oil in on purpose to preserve the engine during storage. So that would be a good thing :niceone:
Do a compression test before you stick it in anyway just in case...

Thanks for the help guys and and a huge thanks to Mark Waters for your advice over the phone. I've given the sparkplugs a good swish around in a solvent and they have come up with a light brown colour. I'm pretty sure that we're in the clear - should find out next Sunday when we put the engine in and fire her up.

it wasn't shipped upside down, it was packed the right way up in canada but because we're on the other side of the world when it crosses the equator it turns up the other way, if you'd clicked on the shipping option to flip it over at the border it would turned up 'the right way up'

Yes I'd guess a bit of oil put down plug hole was part of the storage method. Certainly has been a tried and proven method. Best of luck to the OP with the install and test run.

...an inversion table would sort that out too, I reckon...

It costed $721 for the shipping and $340 for the customs import fees. Not cheap!

Good luck finding one in NZ. I called at least 25 motorcycle wreckers all over the country with no luck. The closest wrecker I could find was aussie.
