After having a fang on a trailbike in a paddock a couple of weeks ago, i'm keen to get into trail riding and am in the market for my first trailbike. I'm after a 250 4-stroke from the early-mid 90's in good mechanical conditon (cosmetic condition is not a big issue - this is my first trailbike, it just needs to run well and be reliable). Something like a DR250, XR250, YZ250 etc would be perfect. Anything considered. Im looking to spend around $1500. Can travel up as far as the hawkes bay (I'm in wellington). So that means manawatu, wairarapa etc is all good...
Cheers

Not trying to be a dick or anything but the YZ250 is 2 stroke not 4, The YZF400 is four stroke and a bloody awsome bike. try and see if you can find one in your price range. You won't regret it!!

if you are a learner a yzf450 will kick your arse mate.
and i doubt you will pick one up for that money unless its hot.
the DR and XR are both good bikes for learners, dont get an XR 200 as there specs are not up to it for trail riding.
the yzf250 will be a handful also but is a bloody awesome bike, but bear in mind they arent too keen on going slow and idleing as they heat up real quick,
these are just my opinions and there are heaps more people on here that know way more than me about trail bikes so they'll se you in the right direction

After having a look at a couple in my price range, it seems that the only bikes that are in good nick (ie no problems that need to be fixed) are 2-strokes, which im not too keen on. I think ill wait it out a bit and save a little more money to get something decent thats not going to cause me problems. Did yamaha only start making the yzf250's in recent years? the only ones ive seen are 2001 and up, nothing at all older, only the 2 stroke yz's...
