View Full Version : BMW rear brake hose

My BMW F650 (1994) needs a new rear brake hose (leaking where the rubber hose meets the metal fitting).
BMW have quoted $160 for a new hose, but not in stock.
I live in Hamilton and the bike is in Auckland, so I'm trying to find a way of obtaining a new hose and fitting it all in a single visit.
Some have told me that the old solution of take the old hose to a brake hose specialist who makes a new one the same is no longer a good idea as it could be knocked back in a WOF inspection.
I guess my questions are :
Is $160 reasonable for a new OEM, rubber brake hose ?
Is there anyone in Auckland who can make a new brake hose ?
Any comments on replacement hoses & WOF inspection ?
Thanks

A brake specialists will be supplying compliant product with the relevant numbers on the line so I fail to see why a WOF Nazi would fail it.
A good excuse to order a spiffy braided stainless steel one if you ask me.

Less than $70 to your door and I've always had my orders arrive within 7 days 😎

Wasn't that nonsense of having the compliance details stamped on the fittings debunked some time ago? If memory serves, this was initially a response to changing WOF requirements in which some WOF agents wrongly believed this data needed to be stamped on the fittings. As far as I know this was clarified and this detail is not needed for WOF. From what I understand the only requirement is that the line is of good quality and condition, and that the fittings are appropriately crimped on (e.g. screw on fittings will fail).

Edzackery! Although I think the word might be swaged rather than crimped.

I had a threaded unit some years back - I got a sheet with the compliance numbers supplied with the kit when I ordered it - if I remember the hose fitting was crimped (I specified the length) and you screwed the relevant adapters to that.
Flicked out the papers if asked at wof time - sorted.

End result is a brake line made by NZAD (http://www.nzad.co.nz) in Henderson on the spot for about $95.
WOF time will tell if it passes muster.

Good to know thanks. Could you post a photo of one end of the hose?
I have braided lines on both bikes and have never had an issue, even at AA Mt Roskill.
