reconmend a second bike for a 7yr old?

well... fuck me if I ever thought Id post this shit when I 1st joined KB...

ok so my 7 and 8yr olds have a XR50, great wee bike and being a Honda Homo love the XR... its a 3 speed centrifical clutch.
Now they have out growen it so looking at the next step... whats out thyere cos Im looking at the XR/CRF 80 but still they dont have a manual clutch whice these wee shits of mine are ready for.
Looked at a KX65 ideal 6spd manual BUT high maintance, how relible are they?
tell me what else out there is worth a look will ya's?

Take a look at a few older trials bikes ... low geared and low seat (for want of a better name) height. They teach you rider skills over speed. And you could ride them when the kids aren't ...

They're all pretty low weight too (easy to push/pick up)

Mate you been posting shit SINCE you joined KB so WTF,FJ has a point methinks an old Trials bike is a good idea etc,at 9 i was going nuts out in a paddock on a bloody SL125 which would have to be twice as heavy as any of the newish kids bikes and did me no harm (yea yea debatable)

XR/CRF 70 is effectively just a bigger 50.

The 80 has a manual clutch. And the air filter is a lot easier to get at. But the front tyre is 16", the only one in the world...

KLX 140 comes in three wheel sizes, clutch, disc brakes both ends, fully adjustable rear shock, has a real oil filter (small Yamaha's and Honda's don't) electric start. Just bought the KLX 140L (middle one)perfect height. 19"and 16" wheels for daughter, she's short @ 5'1"
Depends what type of riding they'll be doing. MX or trail, as to what they really want/need.

If you are looking for a play bike simialar charactor to the XR/crf50 get a suzuki DS80

KX65 are very quick and quite peaky, they are not that high maintaince but they will require love in the top and and crank department.
the suzi 65 are the same bike rebadged
the KTM65 esp the later ones are far easier to ride with better suspension.
but these are MX bikes, just go get a DS80.
if you still really want a KX65 i have one here that you can have pretty cheap.

With KX65 watch and listen for top end rattles the plating can wear off with the pistons are not changed often enough.the gearbox oil needs changing regular look at the gear lever the splines wear. the rest is pretty robust.

i agree with the above, a JR80 (or older DS80) is a great bike for a 7 year old, learn to use the clutch, they are cheap and parts are easy to get, bulletproof as well, i got one when i was 7 in 1985 and loved it, starting to show its age looks wise, but still a great bike,

a big 7 year old who is confident would get on a 65cc mxer, but unless you are planning on racing straight away, the JR80 is a better step,

KLX140, CRF100 and 125 will be too tall, for them,

other option is KLX110/TTR110 or CRF110, still auto clutch 3 speeds,

if you want electric start and Clutch, then a KLX110L has both,
