Do I have a leg to stand on, is it worth fighting? General consensus?

Please see attached picture. - I've blocked out letters for security
"Displayed other than authorised registration plate" $100 fine and 25 DEMERITS! - that's the annoying part, not too concerned about the price
The officer offered me no compliance, and wouldn't give me a chance to fix it. I still have the original plate and can change it back if needed (would prefer not to)
Its my understanding that this is a grey area - this plate is reflective and is pretty clear to me.
Any assistance/help would be appreciated ! any legal advisors?
I can't see a red tail light or a number plate light either so that could be a problem

"Displayed other than authorised registration plate" ?
I think it's more simply getting nailed for a non std plate.

The tail lights and stop lights are in the flashers Merv.

Do you require a rear reflector as well?
Cheers

From NZTA website (http://nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/licensing-rego/number-plates/):
What does a number plate look like?
Ordinary plates are made out of aluminium with black embossed characters (numbers and letters) against a white retro-reflective background.
Personalised plates are also made of aluminium but the characters can be black, red or blue on a white retro-reflective background.
Also, I stand to be corrected, "compliance" is offered at the discretion of the police concerned.

The cop had a couple of options as to what ticket to write.
If you took the same photo from the other side of the bike you likely wouldn't be able to see the plate. That's a separate offence.
The only plates you can legally display are the ones issued by the govt contracted manufacturer.
It's rarely enforced, but it's a legitimate offence. If everyone just made their own plates the system would basically collapse. There could be 10 people around the country using A1ABC or FATHD. The cops would have to check every plate on every vehicle to see if the correct vehicle is displaying the plate.

What about the number plate light?

Would a toll road camera be able to pick up a plate like that?

Can't see well enough, but me may be using the number plate mounting bolts that have lil led lights in them. They pass.

Okay so I'm screwed..
I've been riding with these plates for well over 12 months and never had any issues.. but I've never been pulled up either so maybe it was just a matter of time before I got pinged.
Would a toll road camera be able to pick up a plate like that?
Yes and No, I've gone to pay a toll a couple of times and the charges haven't been there? other times they have charged me.

Yeah that's correct, light is integrated into the top right hand bolt. Not sure about the reflector, warrant still has a few months left on it, will find out then.

Here's a hypothetical.
If you ride through stop signs at 50 kmh for a year, and don't get caught, does that mean it's legal?
If you do it and a cop sees you and does nothing does that make it legal?
Laws are laws. Stupid or not, laws are laws.

You got off lightly ...
Only plates issued by the Transport Agency are legal, which means you can’t make your own plate or purchase one online. Displaying a non-approved plate or something that could be mistaken for a plate could mean a maximum fine of $5000.

And ... after passing the "attitude test" ... :shifty:
Coupla years ago - Mine was vertical, legible, large font, reflective, accurate, and had passed 3x WOFs; then got ticketed by the Local Blue Gang and was told 'take it off the road and get compliant or we will ticket you every time we see you'.
So, yeah. I did that. Had a custom bracket made to put it horizontal on the rear fender, plus lights etc. Extra $280.

+1 - must spread more reputation...
BTW, what's so wrong with mounting the plate where the manufacturer intended?
... if you don't want a rectangular plate you could have a square one.

Why not have it at the side ... with a harley at maximum lean angle ... it will still be well clear of the ground ... <_<

I do not disagree with you, you are right. In the sense that passing the attitude test saves money.
But of course, to pass the attitude test, we need to assume the role of serf. "By your leave Milord Cop, may I now go about my duties?" +, forelock tugging.

IMO it's all on a par with "don't say or do anything that might upset the adherents of the Religion of Peace (TM) or we will fine you and/or put you in jail."

Perhaps some think these are not points on a continuum. In my opinion, they are wrong.
As a famous philosopher once said, "to know who rules over you, just recognise who you are not allowed to criticise".

On my US-built bike it was mounted exactly where the manufacturer intended. Made no diff to the Aoteoroa LEOs.

They are well out of the wind behind the mudguard too so why do they stick them out on the side of a Harley. Everyone to their own but bobbers and the like just don't do it for me nor do bikes with no back to them at all with the rear wheel stuck way out back and your Missus likely to fall onto the bloody tyre because the seat is so short and there is nothing behind it e.g MV Dragster.

Legislation is prepared by parliament, not the police. Got a problem with the law? You're barking up the wrong tree to get mad at cops.

I neither admit (or deny) anything. I (try to) keep a straight face. Smile ... and they think you're laughing at them.
My only comment is usually ... that .. "I know the rules .. you got me". I'm just not specific on the rules I'm referring to ... :shifty:

they pulled me up on my trailer lights not being visible from i think 80 degrees, i asked them to show me their measuring tool, they didn't have one, had already had a dozen warrants from same place before so they didn't pursue it.
to be fair to them, rather than them come out swinging punches he did first approach me with the the right diocument outlining the issue whicj i though t was professional, what wasn't with a rule that was a measurement, rather than a judgement they had no set tool to do it with

Yeah it's at the discretion of the officer who's pulled you up at the time to whether or not they enforce an infringement notice or not. Gets interesting if the vehicle is in an accident though they can follow it through to whoever issued the WOF if the cause of the accident is a defect that wasn't up to WOF standard etc can get messy for the business who issued said WOF
Think there was a case on FairGo a few years back in regards to that sort of thing and the business who'd been issuing WOFs got their arses well & truly reamed

And now many such businesses are getting super strict on what isn't allowed ... as they perceive the rules to be. What was ignored in the past now gets the thumbs down.
With the issue of a WOF now attributable to the individual that issued the WOF (rather than the business alone) ... some individuals are stricter than others. Even if the others are with the same business.

yeah true, it's like what used to be well known places around chch that were the place to go for an easy WOF are now some of the most stringent.
But in saying that the testing for certification for issuing WOFs can be a joke....have seen it 1st hand were the tester followed the Mech around the vehicle being used and actually was pointing out items the Mech missed and happily signed off on the renewed certificate :oi-grr:
