View Full Version : Splitting at Motorway on-ramp lights - yes or no??

I'm fresh back into the country after 8 years away. They didn't have the stupid motorway on-ramp lights when I left. What's the go with these, do you split up to the front like a normal set of lights, or do you wait in the queue with all the peanuts in their cars? Obviously if you did split you'd need to watch out for the ragers opening their doors or moving over on you, but what seems to be the "standard" at these lights?

I cant see a problem with splitting up to the front of the queue given that we are allowed to use the T2 lane anyway when there is one. However once I get to the front I am unsure whether I should wait for the next green light and potentially steal someone elses place in the queue or do I just go through the red and therefore not affect anyone else, but instead run a red light.

Motorway on ramp lights do not apply to bikes. Split and go.

Seems the safest approach, roll thru at a relaxed pace, with authority :devil2::laugh:

There was an official letter posted on here some time back, stating that this is perfectly OK to do. "Traffic control lights do not apply to motorcycles" essentially.

Any chance of finding it?

I couldn't.

I filter nice and steadily (Slow in second gear) up to the front. I do wait for the lights though I make sure I get away sharpish to avoid having to argue with the cars for road space thereafter. Any quicker and you'd be taking the proverbial and you're still gaining heaps over the cagers.

I've never had any cagers move over on me and going slowly often allows them time to move out of the way (Some do) before you get to them.

a) ignore them

it depends on which ones I am at, there are a couple with lanes that are pretty narrow. Wouldn't bother moving up there unless the cars made room. Other ones I would hop over into the T2 etc. lanes. If I do split up to the front then I wait for the lights but twist that wrist hard to get out of people's ways when they will be trying to merge.

Ask Azkill. Most laws don't apply to motorcycles.

Only place where I have noticed it is Kybher Pass on ramp behind St. Peters. But then that might just be me worrying about being bigger than I actually am. Sometimes it is fine but at other times the cars can be quite packed in.

It's all a bit of nothing really, use on ramps how you see fit... what's the worse than can happen?

It's like some of you live in a different country. On ramp lights? What are you talking about? Do we have them down in Christchurch?

Cheers

I generally filter up to the front just behind the front two cars on the entrance ramp, then when the light goes green I take off with them but keep behind them.

That way the cars behind don't feel like they've lost a spot, and I'm on the motorway many many spaces before I would have been and can afford to be behind the two cars who were at the head of the queue. Probably have got out into the centre lane and passed them by the time the merge lane ends.

My usual on-ramp going home is the one behind Newmarket. If I can, I filter. It's a bit narrow and people drive like c#$%s so sometimes they don't leave me enough space to get through. I usually move up and wait behind the first set of cars then go with their light. Until recently there was a nasty pothole in the right track (fixed two weeks ago) just after the two lanes merged.

At Mt Wellington there's a T2, so I take that if there's any traffic at the lights, or through the normal lanes without waiting if no one in my way.

'S'all good! I should've gotten over into the T2 lane at the start of the onramp, but to keep momentum I just continued through the queue to the front and kept going. No one in this queue seemed to mind.
