I got stopped by a motorcycle cop a few days ago because apparently the lights on my numberplate are illegal. He said I'd lose 15 points off my license if I get done. But I've had my bike (Honda Hornet 900) for something like two years and it's passed all the WOFs. I got stopped by a cop last year because my rear tyre was a bit flat (nail) but he didn't mention anything about it. I've tried searching online but this is all I can find:
https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/motorcycles/lighting/rear-registration-plate-illumination-lamps
and that seems fine. The biker cop said it wasn't a WOF thing but I don't know where else to look.
Does anyone know what the definitive requirements are?

Why are you not giving us all the information or a photo? The cop would have told you why.

The link you've provided in your post is the definitive requirement.

Did he mention anything specific?
I am curious because I have non std lights on my license plate.

Got a tail tidy on it I presume as the factory one would not be a problem (provided the light is working of course).
If so it may be this due to the angle of the light being visible from behind. The 'light' should illuminate the plate without being a outward rear facing white light.
4. The light source of a lamp is visible from the rear of the motorcycle.
Cop should have explained his/her concern so you could rectify it.

Some of those aftermarket numberplate bolts /lights are very bright and show white light to the rear, Is this the problem?

take the number plate off, then the cops wont give a fuck about the lights.

Sorry, real life got in the way of my internet life.
Apparently the problem is the two LEDs mounted on the numberplate. According to him there isn't supposed to be anything within the 'edge' of the numberplate.

Yes, I know it needs a wipe - he said that too.

Havent seen those ones before, I assuming that they shine red to the rear? And white onto the plate? They do actually look as if they are showing a bit of white light to the rear as well? Anyhow, the fact you didn't get a ticket the first time and presumably no written warning, means IF you get pulled again you can just breeze out of it without drama...keep calm and carry on I would have thought...

Agree, I think the cop's small dick got in the way and he had to express his... ''opinion''.
