Rear guard length

Hey guys, would anybody be able to tell me off the top of their head how far back on the wheel the rear guard shiuld be sitting to avoid splashing water and shit all up ya back while riding? I inherited a bike which like to cocktail everywhere.

at least slightly further back than a vertical line at the most rearward point on the rear tyre

About 45 degrees back from the rear axle.

But that won't look cool ;)
